My name is Gordon J Millar and I have been lucky enough to say that I am the creator of the Scot Street Style global community. It is dedicated to capturing the essence of Scottish style, character and humour. This movement aims to gather the diverse, like-minded individuals to celebrate and share our creativity, to promote Scottish design, explore our artistic innovation and draw the eyes of the world to this land as we define what it means to be Scottish in the 21st Century... @ScotStreetStyle
We couldn't do this without the power of social media, particularly Instagram - its openness, reach and equality allow us to share without barriers. Designers in Paris are seeing the latest handmade scarves from the Borders, guys in Brooklyn are reposting the style icons of Glasgow, all over the country the images of our culture and creativity are inspiring others. It’s that self expression and sense of community that is the core of Scot Street Style.
#Onward! Scot Street Style Annual 2015 will showcase the amazingly diverse, creative and vibrant energy of Scotland. Our goal is to collect and squeeze as much of this into our first annual - a beautifully produced, square (to reflect our start on Instagram!) 300 page hardback book that will sit proudly on coffee tables and shelves across the world.
Publishing is as much an art as it is a business and so to help share this book with the world we are working with Tiger Forest who run a boutique publishing house focusing on socially aware projects and producing products with a superior attention to detail and quality. These goals and standards mean that they only produce 2 books a year and I am delighted to be able to say #Onward! will be one of them.
So, as we deal with print deadlines, ISBN registration, technical issues, shipping, sales contracts and more, we will have the guys at Tiger Forest there to help us every step of the way.
WE NEED YOU!
Scot Street Style is all about sharing. It is my constant joy to repost and promote what we do here, and now we want to put all of that in our book. We have beautiful pictures lined up for the book but to truly represent the style of this great nation we need you!
The submission requests are flooding in from professionals and enthusiasts alike, and we want YOU to be in our first book: #Onward! Scot Street Style Annual 2015. It needs your images. We want to show the world your creativity, your style, workshops, fashion, events, catwalks, best outfit, new haircut, tattoos - everything!

Something magical is happening, and we want EVERYONE involved in this project.
EVERYONE LOVES AN ORIGIN STORY
Gordon J Millar said, when walking through New York, “I was stopped by a sweet, older gentleman who asked my partner & I to stop so he could take a photograph of us in our World Peace Tartan gear as we strolled along 5th Avenue, we had no idea that he was streetstyle legend, Bill Cunningham, and that photo would appear in the New York Times!”
That chance meeting on 5th Avenue was the catalyst to drive me to raise the profile of creativity back home in Scotland, to ensure that Glasgow would be mentioned in the same breath as New York, London, Berlin, Tokyo and Paris.
This book is a milestone of that journey and showcases the wonderful people and talents this movement has found in Scotland.
We want this to be a project that everyone is involved in and everyone can afford. However we also want to make sure it makes it to peoples bookshelves. So we’ve started our Kickstarter Goal with an entry level print run of the book which gives us an RRP of £35.
The more money we raise, the more we print, the lower the RRP. And the lower the RRP means it’s even more accessible to enable more people to buy the book and see exactly what we’re doing in this global movement! We would love to get the beautifully produced square format, hardback book of 300 pages down to an RRP of £24 and to do this we need to raise as much as possible.
So please get involved: submit your photos, pledge your support and tell everyone about this project!
Risks and challenges
This is where Tiger Forest really come into their own, so lets hear from them:
Great experiences are at the centre of everything we do, and books are very close to our hearts. In September 2013, we had an opportunity to help new playwright Damien Tracey by putting our publishing experience to use. 24 hours after receiving the script we opened our boutique publishing arm with Damiens play - Warde Street.
In past experience we have worked with, and produced books for global brands like Sony Entertainment, national brands such as the HMV group but also the independent book market. With more than 14 years in the business, we know the dynamics of the book selling world and work hard to provide retailers with compelling offers which can be passed on to customers.
As publishers we know how important the experience of reading is. As designers we also understand the importance of the book’s aesthetic, whether it is a printed book or an ebook. The key skill that links these areas together is an attention to detail combined with a vision of how different parts come together to form an incredible read.
Details of what book retailers need to know to buy the book (including the ISBN number) are available from the Tiger Forest website. (tigerforest.co.uk)
