About

About This Project:

We stand in Solidarity with Kickstarter United #RecognizeKSRU

Launching across New York City in March 2020, The Immigrant Artist Biennial (TIAB): HERE, TOGETHER! will present multi-disciplinary exhibitions and events highlighting the multiplicities of immigrant experiences and providing a platform for U.S.-based immigrant artists from around the world, across race and social class, to showcase their work.

Our first-ever biennial will focus on themes of otherness, separation, and community, and feature immigrant artists working across performance, installation, sound, sculpture, video, digital art, text, and books. The program will span 4+ venues including EFA Project Space (The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts) , NARS Foundation Gallery (The New York Art Residency and Studios), Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space, a program of Artists Alliance Inc., Greenwood Cemetery and more, including non-profit institutions, galleries, museums, and public sites.

The biennial is directed by immigrant artist and curator, Katya Grokhovsky, who was born in Ukraine and migrated first to Australia in 1992, and then to the U.S. in 2009. Having left her home country once, she has never felt like she belonged anywhere in particular. She finally found a safe harbor in New York City and has called it a home for the last 8 years, attributing this feeling to the city’s diversity and history, languages and ethnicities. However, her journey as an artist and cultural producer in the U.S. has not been without struggle, misunderstanding, exclusion, underestimation and dismissal, based on other’s assumptions. So over time, she has developed strategies to cope and build her career, through active participation in the arts community as an artist and independent curator as well as working as a mentor in NYFA (New York Foundation for the Arts) Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program.

TIAB logo (enamel pin reward)

With the support of a diverse team and fiscal sponsorship provided by New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) and (YOU!), the inaugural TIAB will create a platform for exchange and presentation of projects by often overlooked and silenced voices. We are an artist-run, volunteer and grass roots organization!

TEAM:

Katya Grokhovsky - Founding Artistic Director and Chief Curator, Anna Mikaela Ekstrand - Curatorial Advisor /Head of Partnerships, Mary Annunziata - Curatorial Advisor / Artist Liaison, Allison Cannella - Curatorial Assistant / Sponsorships, Teona Yamanidze - Curatorial Assistant / Fundraising, Alex Sullivan - Digital Production Manager, Juana Urrea - Social Media Coordinator/ Administrator, Ariel Diaz - Graphic Design/Video Editing

Why is this important?

TIAB is designed to attract a diverse audience, both within the existing artworld networks and broader immigrant and multicultural communities nationally and internationally.

This campaign is here to support Latinx immigrants fighting their way across a wall of ignorance. This campaign is here to include Eastern European artists who often never get exposure or space in New York. This campaign is here for artists from countries who face border control, travel bans, artists fighting for 01 Visas and Green Cards. All bodies, all languages, all ages, all religions. By pledging to this campaign, you’re supporting our work, our vision, and our voices.

Many artists come to U.S. in the first place because they believe in the importance of self-expression, and because they struggle to find the support they need to produce their work in their home country.

TIAB is an opportunity to rally around immigrant artists, some of whom are literally risking their freedom to bring creative work into the world.

About TIAB:

The Immigrant Artist Biennial (TIAB) is a multi-disciplinary multi venue exhibition project, created to celebrate, expose and highlight immigrant artists. Inspired by the struggles and personal narrative of TIAB’s Founding Director, Ukrainian born, Australian raised, U.S. based artist and curator, Katya Grokhovsky, TIAB aims to eventually present international artists and become a significant platform for immigrant voices.

TIAB seeks to not only develop urgent and innovative relationship between artists and audiences on a global scale, but to also support and facilitate the significant and integral cultural contributions by Immigrant artists in the U.S.

Why Kickstarter?

We’re exploring the idea of building support through ethical fundraising, which includes crowdfunding, partnerships with immigrant-owned businesses, grants from reputable foundations, and private funds through donors who are committed to our work and mission.

What will your contribution support?

Our goal of 10K is to initially support the production of exhibitions in 1-3 sites in Spring/Summer 2020. However, we are also interested in creating a like-minded community of backers and mission aligned believers with whom we can build a more inclusive culture!

All additional funds we raise through here will go towards support of more venues and artists. The overall project will require 50K to produce; this Kickstarter will get us started with initial funds.

We believe in paying artists for their work. Your contribution will directly support the following items in our overall budget:

  •  Artists’ fees

  •  Production expenses (art handlers, promotion, printed matter, materials, labor,   public programming, incidentals, miscellaneous, shipping, travel, etc)

  •  Team support

Risks and challenges

If we don’t reach our funding goal through Kickstarter, TIAB will continue at a smaller scale. Since 2020 is an election year, we believe that this exhibition series has potential for significant impact on art audiences, the general public, and even voters. However, if there are political actions that prevent us from presenting the works and fulfilling the campaign, we may experience some short-term delays.
