What is this project?

Due to many calls for more opportunities for racially diverse publishing projects in the furry fandom, we are wanting to open up a furry anthology exclusively for furries of color. Edited by Weasel Patterson, a biracial furry author and editor in Texas, this project will hopefully be a regular book series. The anthology will be for general audience short stories. However, why are we doing a Kickstarter? Thurston Howl Publications has never run a Kickstarter for an anthology before! We want to make this a highly paid anthology, with top-notch illustrations and a high pay rate for its authors. We really, really want to SFWA rates for this project, so any support is welcome, even if it's just a dollar!

Who is Thurston Howl Publications?

We are a furry-inclusive publishing house based in Lansing, Michigan. We started up back in 2014 with a wolf conservation anthology, and we have always been involved in progressive politics. We produced the world's first furry nonfiction book, FURRIES AMONG US, which won an Ursa Major Award in 2015. We published THE STABLE BOY shortly after, which featured a black protagonist in a furry world. PRIDE OF PARAHUMANS was a space opera with an androgynous protagonist, and most of our anthologies have trans and gender-nonconforming characters. We are currently open for a trans furry anthology as well. Thurston Howl himself has contributed to the fandom through the creation of the Furry Book Review program, the Leo Literary Awards, and the Dead Furry Society for furry horror writers. Our website is  thurstonhowlpublications.com, and our Twitter is at twitter.com/ThurstonHowlPub

What's the cost breakdown?

3-6 cents/word = $900 (for 3 cents for a 30k word antho) to $3600 (for 6 cents for a 60k word antho)

100-150 dollars an art piece = $400 to $1500

If we just get the 1,000, obviously that's not really enough for even the smallest antho (30k words), but THP would cover the rest. The more over $1,000 we get, the more we will be able to increase the rate we offer contributors!

So, wait, that's it? What about book formatting, editing fees, etc.? All of the usual in-house costs are being done on a volunteer basis. We really want all the proceeds from this Kickstarter to go directly to the creators.

Who all is contributing to this?

This list will be updated a couple times a week! As it just started, we've seen a lot of interest from the community. Of course, our editor Weasel is interested, and we've had a diverse range of furs asking questions about it! As authors and artists tell me they're definitely submitting, I'll add their names here!

Confirmed artist(s): Raynehound

What happens if we get over the goal?

At that point, the above pie chart still holds up! We will not be pocketing any of this money ourselves. It will all go to the artists and authors. Nothing could make us happier than being able to tell authors, "Look, we know we promised you four cents a word, but it looks like we'll be giving you five. So sorry." Or telling artists, "I know your commission cost was a hundred, but we got more money than we thought. Have a hundred twenty-five!"

Hey, I'm an interested writer! How do I submit?

The anthology's call for submissions is here. It's due in August (you might have to scroll down on the page to see it; it's called Di-Fur-Sity)! Check it out, and if you have questions, contact Weasel at weasel.thurstonhowlpub@gmail.com.

Risks and challenges

The timeline for the rewards might be a bit tough just with the uncertainty that comes with anthologies. People always end up asking for extensions, and some people take longer to return edits than others. But I can definitely guarantee to post consistent updates to the anthology here as well as reach out to backers if there are any delays whatsoever!
