Off the Beaten Path, Forest Excursions - Project Overview
A minimum of twenty single or double page forest adventures to use as side quests or stand-alone adventures for your Fantasy RPG. There are over twenty-four pages of encounters found within the bowels of deep forests or mystical glades. As your player's characters travel through the wilderness, they will come across tombs, ruined castles, tree-houses, villages, caves, battle sites, and more! These adventures are a great way to add additional encounters during travel, or to handle an unexpected change in direction!
Excursions started as Patreon project - I've delivered 2-4 adventures digitally to subscribers each month throughout 2016. This project prints all the adventures from the previous year in a single book.
Current Project Status
Note that the Tenkar's Tavern 'Donation' is merely a loose agreement for "services rendered" for SWL advice and double-checking of information for the new system.
This project delivers the Excursions book in two formats: a system neutral version with expanded stat blocks for GMs to fill in, and the Swords & Wizardry Light version (OSRIC compatible).
Note that 1% of *all* SWL sales will be paid to Tenkar's Tavern, to support the ongoing Swords & Wizardry Light work! If we reach the $3000 stretch goal, I'll double the percentage!
At this time, there is no plan to produce a 5th edition D&D version of Forest Excursions - this is mainly due to space requirements on each page. Of course, with a few minutes of prep, the system-neutral version can easily be adapted to any FRPG system, including 5th edition.
There is no PDF option - PDFs are available to monthly Patreon subscribers only.
Besides the cover and a few stretch goal rewards, the project will have no artwork within the book. One and two page adventures utilize all of the small amount of space for encounter details, monsters and treasure. There is no room for interior artwork!
The cover art has been created by Travis Hanson, a well known artist. You can see his cover work below.
He also has his own project this month, found here: Life of the Party - The Realities of an RPG'er
Excursions Adventurer - one copy of the Off the Beaten Path, Forest Excursions book, soft-cover, saddle-stitched, color cover, black and white interior, minimum 20 adventures over 24 pages. Choose either the system neutral or Swords & Wizardry Light version.
Excursions Explorer - two copies of the Forest Excursions book, 1 of each system version listed above.
Project Work at Launch and Completion
All twenty adventures have been completed for Patreon and are ready for printing. As you can see by the image above, Travis has completed the cover. The PDF prints of the 20 adventures are seen below (1 side shown, 25 pages in total).
During the project, I'll finish the adventure upgrades to Swords & Wizardry Light, and work through any project stretch goals additions as we go along.
The book will be printed with a minimum of 20 adventures. However, stretch goals will increase that number! Additionally, upgraded maps, more artwork and other options will be revealed for copy count goals.
* Est. Copies are approximate only, total project $ includes shipping.
Adventure Planner - I plan out my short Excursions in a custom worksheet I've been using for some time. The Adventure Planner book is available as an add-on to the project. This 32 page book has a variety of map sizes and note blocks for use in planning your own side adventures. Each book costs an additional $6, added to your reward total.
Cover Print - If you like the cover, I can add a print to your reward for an additional $5. This 8.5x11 color print, without the title and author's name, is suitable for framing. Note that this print is of the front cover only. The back cover illustration stretch goal will not be included in the print.
The survey will ask for your add-on rewards - be sure to adjust your reward pledge to cover these add-ons.
Flat rate shipping to three locations is built into each reward: US backers add $5 to their reward, Canadian backers pay $15, and the rest of the world pays $20.
I've continued work on Patreon, shifting to a desert theme for 2017. You can check out the current project work here.
Thanks to JoshN, EfraimH, and AbbyW for their roles in the project video; thanks to BenW for filming, editing and producing the video.
A special thank you to D.M. Hunt Library for letting us use their space to make our video.
Thanks to Erik "Tenkar", Matt Finch and Frog God Games for the Swords & Wizardry rules system, including the new Light version!
Risks and challenges
Every project has risks, but I've done enough of them now to know how to minimize issues before they become unmanageable.
I have already written the initial 20 adventures for the book - as each adventure stretch goal is unlocked, I'll write and playtest a new adventure. As each map upgrade stretch goal is unlocked, I'll communicate the work to the cartographer. I'll stay in front of all the changes as they happen.
I use a local printer that has delivered quality print work on time and on budget. I do not use a fulfillment service - I do all the packing and shipping myself. Although this means I have to work harder and longer hours to get everything out the door on time, I won't have to worry about someone else dropping the ball.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
