What is ClockOS?
Essentially, it's a clock. Ultimately, it's a 'whole lot more' ! A beautiful modern design that will look stunning in any environment (at home and at work). This art inspired timepiece is ready to enjoy from the moment it is unpacked. The ClockOS comes pre-programmed with many "visually stimulating" clock styles. Three push-buttons on the back of the clock allow you to set the time and select LED colors that fit your taste and your decor. Select a location (where all your friends will see it) , set the time, and you’re ready to enjoy the beauty of this ultra modern time piece.
We are offering the ClockOS without a case for our wood working, metalworking and art people. There are a lot of talented people out there that we know can come up with some beautiful enclosures for the ClockOS. For everyone else that has no desire to build their own case we offer the ClockOS in a finised wooden case or a machined aluminum case with or without a machined aluminum desktop base. We've also included an option to have the aluminum frame bead blasted just like your Mac. The bead blasted finish of the clock along with the black face plate will match your Macbook or iMac perfectly.
"Display and enjoy...."
There are 3 switches on the rear of the clock that allow you to select the color and pattern of the leds to suit your taste. The color of the leds and the patterns can be easily changed to reflect your personal taste. Ten differnent pattens can be saved in memory and recalled at any time. The clock is pregrammed with our favorite layouts and can be recalled any time.
A whole lot more" comes as an open source RGB(Red, Green, Blue) LED clock with an Arduino engine that any programmer can modify the code to do just about anything they want. Based on the Arduino Pro mini platform, any programmer can write programs to control each LED individually. Want the clock to sync to your computer for the most accurate time? Want the clock to change color as the day progresses? Would you like it to be a 24 hr clock? How about a clock that counts backwards? How about sound?(Westminister chimes would be a pretty neat addition). You can program all these things using the FREE Arduino development software. An Atmel micro along with a PIC25K22 processor controls all the clock functions. The ClockOS even has ISP ports on board to reprogram the bootloaders or directly load your hex files. You are also going to love the built in hardware expansion ports that let you connect to all types of external sensors. (This unit has all the capabilities of a Arduino Pro board) A temperature module? Humidity Sensor? Light Sensor? Servo Motors? Speakers? The sky and your imagination are the only limits you have with this Arduino based system.
What is the money for?
It's expensive to ramp up into a full scale manufacturing process. If we wanted to make 10 of these clocks, they would cost upwards of a thousand dollars each. In fact the few prototypes we have.... well lets just say we have already invested a lot of money and time into the ClockOS project! Large quantity means lower prices, the more printed circuit boards, LEDs and electrical components we can order the lower our price is for these items. It cost over fifteen hundred dollars just to have the surface mount machine programmed and setup to start building the ClockOS board. So we need to sell many clocks just to recoup the setup charges alone from the manufacturers that we will have producing the boards and cases.
We have set our goal at $25,000. That is the absolute minimum we need to start bringing in inventory and get our machine shop started on cases. This will give us enough money to start producing these clocks and maybe have enough left over to bring some more ideas of ours to Kickstarter. We really need to sell alot more than $25,000 to make the ClockOS a success, and that is where all of you come in. Backing us and spreading the word is the way we can continue to add even more exciting features and variations to this clock.
Preloaded Clock Routines
The ClockOS comes with multiple routines preloaded so you can be up and running within minutes of turning on the clock. Each and every clock can be set to any color scheme or routine the user wants and this requires no knowledge of program. It's all set using the buttons on the back of the clock.
How do you tell the time?
We've had a couple people ask how you read the clock. The example below shows one version of the clock that is pre-programmed to run out of the box and anyone can change the colors with just the press of a button. As a programmer you could write your own routine to display the time in your own unique way.
