If you are one of my more than 22,000 YouTube subscribers, you've seen the many helpful art instruction videos that I've posted to my channel over the years. With close to 1 million views on my channel, I am humbled at the world-wide reach and interest in my videos. My wife, who does the camera work for most of my videos, and I have been touched by all the praise for our production quality and useful information I share in my videos. I love creating these videos because it feels good to pass on the knowledge of the traditional painting techniques that I've honed over the years. If you haven't seen my YouTube channel, you should go visit it to see what all the fuss is about :-)
But as much as I share about painting processes in my YouTube videos, there is only so much I can squeeze into a 15- or 30-minute video, so I have decided to create the most comprehensive acrylic painting technique video I can possibly imagine.
This is where I need your help. Because my wife and I create our videos all by ourselves, it takes a lot of planning, filming, and editing to make even the simplest of videos for my YouTube channel. But now I want to create a four-hour long video. It's a monster of a project that we look forward to tackling. By pledging to my project, you are not only helping me to cover the cost of manufacturing the DVDs, you're giving me the most important thing I need: Time. To create this full length video, I will have to free up at least three months of time to make it happen. That means I won't be able to take on my usual freelance work, which is how I make my income.
So please look over the details of this project below. I hope you will consider pledging. I thank you so very much for any support you can give.
VERY IMPORTANT: I have not yet created the artwork that will be featured in this technique video. The imagery you see on this page (grey and green monster with blue tongue) is only used to give you an example of what the packaging will look like. This is not the final image. I hope to share sketches of the final art during the course of this Kickstarter campaign.
The content of this video will benefit beginners to professionals at any stage of their careers. My goal is to not only give you the most detailed look at my acrylic painting process but also to answer your many questions about creating an acrylic painting from start to finish. I will focus heavily on creating a professional fantasy painting for a paying client. This video won't just cover the "how;" it will also cover the "why."
Here are some of the topics and techniques that will be demonstrated in this video:
- Anatomy (Creature and Human)
- Using Reference Photos
- Drawing from the Imagination
- Tools for Sketching (Types, Care, and Use)
- Thumbnail Sketching
- Final Sketch
- Color Roughs
- Color Theory and Composition
- Painting Surfaces (Preparation, Materials, and Tools)
- Transferring the Final Drawing to its Painting Surface
- Planning the Stages of Painting
- Palettes (Types, Care, and Use)
- Paints (Types, Care, and Use)
- Brushes (Types, Care, and Use)
- Solvents (Types, Care, and Use)
- Mediums (Types, Care, and Use)
- Underpainting (Process and Purpose)
- Glazing and Scumbling
- Building Form through Layering
- Opaque versus Transparent Color
- Mixing and Blending Colors
- Painting Problematic Subjects (Glass, Metal, Skin Tones)
- Painting Effects (Splatters, Textures, etc.)
- Airbrush (Care and Use)
- Work Area (Easel, Drawing Table, Dining Room Table)
- Sealing The Final Painting (Materials and Use)
- General Safety (Tools and Materials)
As you can see, this video will be packed with information. Throughout the course of this Kickstarter campaign, I may be adding more topics to this list.
I encourage you to use the comments section of this campaign to let me know of other topics you might like discussed and/or demonstrated in this video.

I have been creating fantasy art professionally for more than 22 years. I've illustrated for properties such as Dungeons & Dragons, World of Warcraft, Mars Attacks, Star Wars, Planescape, Earthdawn, Shadowrun, and Magic: the Gathering, for which I've created 110 paintings.
I've also done conceptual toy and video game design, editorial illustrations, and picture books, as well as various activity books for Klutz/Scholastic.
For a few years now I have been sharing my acrylic and oil painting, inking, and drawing techniques through my YouTube channel, which has grown to over 22,000 subscribers and nearly 1 million views.

Risks and challenges
My wife and I already successfully delivered one Kickstarter project earlier this year. We are very proud that we estimated our production schedule properly and all backers of that project received their rewards on time or earlier than expected.
With that being said, there are sometimes production delays. But I'm happy to say that I am working with a manufacturer right here in my home state of Wisconsin to produce the DVDs. This will certainly help eliminate any communication or shipping issues.
My goal is to make sure all backers have their digital download or physical rewards in hand sometime in December 2015, preferably before Christmas.
I will keep you updated at every step of the process. If anything changes, such as my preferred timeline or production schedule, you will be the first to know.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
