Early in 2000, Three Lobed Recordings was born out of the notion that there needed to be a 10" EP included within Bardo Pond's discography. Late in 2009, with the label's looming tenth anniversary on the horizon, we (and in this case "we" means one human and three feline assistants) decided that it was time to take the curatorial enjoyment that resulted in our three multi-disc subscription CD series and transfer that spirit over to the vinyl format. Rather than do this as a series, we decided it would be a lot more fun, efficient, and economical to put the project out as a one-shot box set. From that notion we assembled a dream-team lineup of artists who were also interested in helping assemble this project.
Think back to the wonder the first time you were sucked into the epic sprawl of such seminal collections as "Harmony of the Spheres" and "By The Fruits You Shall Know The Roots." It's been several years since one one of these time capsules has been created to document the various phases, shapes and sizes of the psychedelic scene - we want this box to help fill that void. Much like how various label predecessors have shaped their epic compilations into lovingly assembled and presented artifacts, the Three Lobed vision of "Not The Spaces You Know, But Between Them" is bold and brash. We want this set to both stand as the single coolest title within the Three Lobed catalog and also be a device to help introduce some new listeners to the various ways psychedelic music is presented in 2011.
This set is *the* biggest financial leap of faith that has ever been undertaken by Three Lobed at any one time. Much like the star-power in the set's lineup, the upfront costs are staggering. This is a project that we really believe in, and that is what brings us to Kickstarter. The goal with this project is to raise the funds that will allow us to cover the mastering of the audio, the payment to the graphic artist whose work will be covering all aspects of the set, and the lacquering and preparation of test pressings. These particular benchmarks only represent a very small fraction of this set's expense but form the entirety of the funding amount sought here at Kickstarter. Once these hurdles have been overcome this project can move forward and become reality.
--"NOT THE SPACES YOU KNOW, BUT BETWEEN THEM" DETAILS--
"Not The Spaces You Know, But Between Them" will be a pretty lush package. The whole thing will start with a plush, heavy Stoughton lid box which will be filled with: four vinyl albums pressed on 140g Dutch vinyl (courtesy of Furnace Mfg. - www.furnacemfg.com), four different printed inner sleeves each bearing different artwork, a big foldover insert with an extensive liner note essay from Marc Masters (The Wire, Pitchfork) and a download card for mp3s of the set. The entire set will feature swanky custom artwork by Three Lobed's old friend, the super-talented Casey Burns (www.caseyburns.com). The audio is lovingly mastered by Patrick Klem (www.klemflastic.com) (with Scott Colburn taking on the Sun City Girls side). We are so stoked to think about being able to have this one in our hands and paws.
As for the music, well, it's hard to put into words just how fantastic a collection of tunes this set happens to be. Here's more details on what everyone has submitted:
SIDE A - Sun City Girls 1. Wide World Of Animals. 2. Sangkala. 3. Caravan. Recorded live November 12, 2004 at Emo's in Austin. This was the final US show by the Sun City Girls and this crisp soundboard recording shows the group clicking at a high level.
SIDE B - Steve Gunn 1. The Lurker Extended. Recorded at Boerum Palace in Brooklyn in February of 2011. This is a mesmerizing swirling jam that has been played with frequency at Gunn's recent live shows.
SIDE C - Sonic Youth 1. In & Out. 2. Out & In. "In & Out" recorded in Pomona, CA and at Echo Cañon, NJ, in 2010. "Out & In" recorded and mixed at Echo Cañon, NYC in 2000 and includes Jim O'Rourke. Two epic jams, including the monumental thirteen minute instrumental "Out & In" which touches on elements of every part of Sonic Youth's myriad sounds.
SIDE D - Mouthus 1. Cabled Away. 2. Echo The Sun. Recorded in Brooklyn in 2010. Two fluid communications from the other side of music channeled to us mere humans by Brian Sullivan and Nate Nelson.
SIDE E - Comets on Fire. 1. 2950 3rd St. A collage of recordings made between 2006-2010 that were Arranged and mixed in May 2010. A screeching and wailing full workout similar to the band's "Black Cassette" release.
SIDE F - D. Charles Speer & the Helix / Wooden Wand. 1. D. Charles Speer & the Helix - "Big, Big City". 2. D. Charles Speer & the Helix - "Shooting Star". 3. Wooden Wand - "Holed Up (Spooning With The Void)". 4. Wooden Wand - "Hall of Blame". 5. Wooden Wand - "Black Nikes". The D. Charles Speer & the Helix tracks were recorded at Seizures Palace in Brooklyn in April 2010. The Wooden Wand tracks were recorded at home in the Winter of 2009 and Summer of 2010. The Speer/Helix tracks are two glorious renditions of some honky tonk classics and represent the only recorded studio output of the era of the band with Dave Nuss (No Neck Blues Band) on drums.
SIDE G - Eternal Tapestry. 1. Doing Your Own Being. Recorded live to tape in Portland on April 20, 2010. This track is powerful and recast version of the band's "Prism Light Traveller" from the 2009 Three Lobed album, "Palace Of The Night Skies." Here the band has slowed the track down and added some intense organ - the results are absolutely transportational.
SIDE H - Bardo Pond. 1. The Invisible Fire. Recorded in the Lemurhaus in Philadelphia in January of 2010. You know Bardo Pond so you know what to expect - rules on how to live in twenty minute power-doses.
Only around 700 sets will be available for sale via mailorder and/or retail after compensating all of the involved talent. Of these 700 sets, 550 are being made available through this Kickstarter campaign.
We have done everything in our power to keep the price on this set as low as possible while also appropriately compensating the artists and covering manufacturing costs.
Due to a laundry list of complicating factors there are no plans to release this set on CD or through any other digital outlet. Vinyl only.
The current estimated ship date on the set is June or July. That said, please realize that there are a lot of moving parts to this project so that date might get pushed along a little bit depending on how everything pans out. Three Lobed is proud of our track record of overall timeliness. We want to get this one out as quickly as possible but also want to make sure it is done properly.
