About

Beyond Humanity: Colonies is a hybrid, semi-cooperative board game for 1 to 5 players. You will be building and expanding a human colony on an alien planet. You will experience a new milestone in the fusion of classic board game design, inventive electronic modules, and its companion app.

In Beyond Humanity: Colonies, players take on the roles of managers of a new settlement built on a distant exoplanet by refugees from a future Earth that is polluted and overpopulated. As a manager, you will propose and vote on new modules to be built, introduce decrees to define the culture and functionality of the colony, carry out planetary exploration and research to obtain valuable artifacts, gather resources, and gain public support from the colonists.

This is a semi-cooperative game, which means you will have to cooperate to keep the colony operational and self-sufficient, while at the same time competing to gain influence and make decisions on the direction of the colony's development based on your individual victory goals. If the colony fails, you all lose, but if it succeeds, there will only be one true winner.

Beyond Humanity: Colonies is a hybrid board game like you've never seen before: it is an unprecedented combination of a traditional board game combined with electronic miniatures that are supported by a linked app.

As board game enthusiasts, our team believes that an app should never take the player's attention away from the board. As engineers and designers, we fought to change the way software is used and can be a part of an exciting tabletop experience.

During the game, the app serves as a self-operating data slate that enhances the classic and traditional board game experience. It displays the status of the colony and its citizens and does not require any interaction asides from clicking “next” at the end of turn. Instead, the game gathers information about your actions on its own! Thanks to the CPU built into the central piece of the game, the app recognizes when the new buildings are connected to it and it can recognize smart cards with the RFID technology built into modules. The miniature buildings will communicate their status with you by flashing lights of different colors. The application on your smartphone or tablet is connected wirelessly to the colony itself and will display all the important information like the current resource statuses and the status of the residents.

On top of it all, hidden behind the scenes, there is a neural network implemented that simulates moods, opinions, and the current feelings of thousands of virtual citizens.

The purpose of putting all this tech into this board game is that it does the complex calculations for you, so you can fully focus on what happens above the table - convincing other players to assist your vision of the colonies future and the race for the upcoming presidential election of this newly born colony!

Thanks to many suggestions and feedback, all the cards and module tiles will be made color-blind-friendly by adding special icons, so any part of the game will no longer be color coded only.

The game design is complex enough, so there is no need to complicate the campaign. We decided not to cut the game into pieces in order to make expansions or partial pledges. There is only one basic pledge with one game box, and there is only one game box configuration that you can get.

You will then get the core box, which is the complete game - and this is what you will receive:

In Beyond Humanity: Colonies we've strived to make the game feel like a regular board game, where players focus on the gameplay:

  • Collecting goods and using various effect cards
  • Negotiating and making votes
  • Planning future decisions
  • Choosing whether to focus on the Colony or personal goals
  • Forming and breaking alliances
  • Searching for artifacts

At the same time, the game CPU along with the companion app will calculate different variables and run the colony simulation, including up to 15,000 individual citizens. Players won't need to worry about this aspect, as the current status of the colony, resources, and population will always be visible on the screen. Other than that, the only time players must interact with an app - is when they press the 'next' button at the end of turn.

If you manage to survive long enough, or your Colony will grow over required limits, the game ends successfully and you will feel like winners. Then compare your victory points and you will discover who has won the game individually.

The main semi-coop mode is completed, but there will also be a fully cooperative mode, as well as a solo mode. A semi-coop (“campaign mode” as we call it) is already balanced and tested. For more info on other modes, please visit our social media and sign up for our newsletter on our website.

When making pledge, you add the proper amount of money for the add-ons of your choice to the pledge. Then you will choose it in the pledge manager, after the campaign closes.

Beyond Humanity is about leaving a dying earth, but it doesn’t mean we want to see it that way anytime soon. Actually we hope that space exploration will be an open-minded path of curiosity, not a necessity to survive.

Therefore, our team decided to carefully design the product in a way that would have minimal possible environmental impact. Electronics are made according to the RoHS standards, are lead-free, and recyclable. Plastic modules are made with ABS and polycarbonate, which are also recyclable. If after 10 or more years you will decide to throw our game away (although we hope you will not), please put it in the proper recycling bins to give it another life, maybe even as parts for future space colonization.

Secondly, we decided to keep all production and suppliers in Europe and in the USA. It would affect the price but there are things more important that simple economy. We decided to keep away from producing in and importing from China, because we believe in the value of human work paid with fair wages and that things we buy should be made in a fair work environment.

Furthermore, European and American manufacturers can give a better guarantee of planet-friendly production process and geographical shortening of the supply line would decrease the carbon footprint.

All module minis are to be manufactured and delivered paint ready. You will be able to disassemble the buildings, take out the electronics and the optical fiber, and paint it anyway you wish or ask your favourite artist to do so. 

It is strongly recommended to express your vision on the colony look and get your minis painted that way, as future galleries on the game website and awarded contests are expected. 

"Under construction" - two modules (Cryogenics and Spaceport) which are going to be designed and sculpted during or after the campaign.

The players' characters in the game are the Managers of the colony. Each of them has a different approach, with a personal history, individual goals, and unique directives to match their strategies and affect the colony development -  your choice of manager will significantly change your game experience every time.

There are currently 4 Managers, fully introduced and balanced. In the final game, there will be 9 of them (or 10 if one of you decide to join by backing the highest pledge).

To give you a well-balanced game our team has spent the last two years testing this game. There were hundreds of internal tests performed, but most important and valuable were the tests with multiple gaming groups. We have been at Gen Con twice, visited countless players in Poland, spend many evenings with fellow friends which gave us an awesome and invaluable feedback.

From mid-2018, subsequent Alpha, Beta and Gamma versions were tested intensively. There were literally hundreds of internal tests and way over 100 full-length games with our supporters. Thanks to that, the game was improved by many gameplay changes and multiple bugfixes. Finally, the game has been balanced - for example, the winning ratio for managers is shown below:

Currently we are working on two companion apps: one for Android system and second one for Apple iOS. First one is going to be available in Google Play Store (and also as a standalone APK, see below), the second one in Apple AppStore. We are aiming at giving you comfortable experience with smartphones and tablets - low end to high tech ones.

Internet isn’t needed to play this game. It is required for updating and using metagame functions, downloading new scenarios, taking part in player-to-player marketplace and community goals. But to play a game you don’t need to use the internet!

As we know that the lack of mandatory companion app will render this game useless we have prepared for unforeseen adversities:

  • We are planning additional version of Companion App (beside of iOS / Android) on Steam for PC platform.
     
  •  APK (Android executable file) will be available for manual download and redistribution from first day of deliveries, and we will keep updating it with new versions.
     
  • We are planning giving our full description of our API (Application Protocol Interface) responsible for “talking” with our hardware via Bluetooth, so creation of third party apps will be possible.
     

Thanks to open-minded approach we all should feel secure that Beyond Humanity: Colonies won’t become abandonware in future!

To fully enjoy our game and not feel as though you’ll risk your money on a next-generation electronic hybrid board game, you need to feel safe about any possible malfunctions. Although we will do our best in choosing the best quality components, we don’t want you to worry that any misfortune would keep you from exploring new worlds with us.

The game will be covered by a two year warranty, according to European Union law. 

We will also provide you with long-term support, including software updates, app updates for new versions of iOS and Android, spare parts delivery, and a helpdesk.

Shipping will be charged after the Kickstarter finishes based on actual costs incurred to ship and is collected via a pledge manager system. This allows us to charge each backer fairly and avoid a 'one size fits all' mentality to shipping.

Below are our initial rough estimates for shipping the core game (4kg volumetric weight). Please note that these are just estimates - costs may rise due to weight increase as more items are unlocked via stretch goals and add-on purchases you choose. We will be charging these costs based on the actual cost of shipping, and collect it through the pledge manager after the campaign ends.

We are 'Three Headed Monster', a small self-publishing venture of people that we were not game developers before, but a group of gamers with different professional skills: coders, designers, hardware engineers and entrepreneurs. This project is a love child of the entire team. A long and rocky road has lead to this moment when a dream became the real product and happy bunch of friends became a company.

We want to make strong and solid statement that all employees and coworkers are EU or USA citizens.

The refund would be possible within 14 days after the campaign’s end, fees included. After this time, refunds could be paid minus the Kickstarter fee and payment processing fees, as we cannot claim them back.

When the packaging of your pledge for shipment will begin (around 6 to 8 weeks before the actual shipping date), no refunds would be possible.

If a component cannot be delivered AT ALL, we will refund that completely, including fees.

All refunds after 14 days from the close of the campaign may be processed via Paypal or reversed via Stripe to your credit card at our discretion. Refunds within 14 days are reversed via Stripe to your credit card.

This project is being funded in USD and any refunds processed will be in USD for the exact amount received in USD, excluding any applicable fees depending on the time of the refund being processed.

By pledging to this project, you acknowledge that the final look, materials, and content of the rewards (and the project) are subject to change and may differ substantially from what is presented while the Kickstarter project was active.

If you do not log in and confirm your pledge within 8 weeks of our notification via email to confirm your pledge, you agree that we have fulfilled our obligations to you in full for payment or donations received. However, we may, at our discretion, refund or ship your pledge if you contact us and confirm your pledge after the 8-week window has elapsed. Unconfirmed pledges make it difficult for us to plan production and logistics, and in the past have led to project delays. We do not intend to allow this to happen, which may mean if you confirm your pledge too late, some specific items may not be produced in sufficient quantity for your pledge.

If you confirm your pledge within 8 weeks of our notification via email, you agree that our responsibility to you is to ship your order as entered into our pledge manager system, that title and risk passes to you upon delivery to a common carrier for such shipment, and you are responsible for import duties or any other duties that may be payable to the relevant tax authorities, providing correct address information and ensuring this address is deliverable by normal methods.

We regret we are unable to ship to PO Boxes.

Risks and challenges

We know that we are a small company and this is our first product. But we can assure you that we are a group of experienced professionals in different fields and many of us have already successfully finalized Kickstarter campaigns in other areas, such as specialized hardware.

We are perfectly aware of the challenges that might occur in the process.
Most crucial areas are:

1. Production - our game is a much more complicated product that traditional board games, many things can happen on the electronics parts market, prices can change or CPUs surplus may get depleted. But we know the market, we have chosen a reliable European and American manufacturers and suppliers, and we are as sure as possible that the production will be done as expected. We have experience in specialized product campaigns - for example, part of our team successfully delivered a BeSteady hardware campaign on Kickstarter in 2013.

2. Supplies - Shipping a complicated fragile product to the entire world is not an easy task. Therefore we are not even trying to do it by ourselves - we have chosen experienced and renowned partners as the pledge manager and shipping/fulfillment center. They already made it multiple times successfully, so they will do it again with our game.

3. Manpower failure - we are a small company, more a group of gamers and passionate enthusiasts, driven by a common vision. We have to always remember that we are only humans and our endurance is not infinite. Therefore, we solemnly swear not to overwork ourselves, not to overdose the coffee and to stay reasonably healthy.

4. Over-creativity - we love our game and we want it to be perfect. Every day we have hundreds of new ideas about new features and enhancements. But we consider this offer binding to the point where we have chosen some of our team members to keep us on the tracks and not overcomplicate anything, but to deliver exactly the product that we promise.
