We are happy to announce new stretch goals and rewards, below. The first two have already been unlocked — THANK YOU!
Sakima's Cuff printed poster!
If we reach $1,250 before 8 PM Sunday (Eastern Time), when the campaign comes to a close, all backers get a technical illustration of Sakima's cuff. Here's my sketch:
I will be hiring an illustrator and work with him or her will turn my sketch into something like the example below. (Note: You are NOT receiving a light saber drawing, just to be clear :D). It will be a professionally-rendered technical illustration, complete with call-outs on design and functionality, and printed on art-quality paper.
The final illustration will reflect how Sakima's cuff really is in the novel, when I'm completely done. Right now, the above sketch is how it looks in the book (and in my mind).
Bookmarks and Pins!
If we meet this stretch goal, a fistful of pins and bookmarks will be mailed to all contributors. Please note that the mock-up above is not the final version of either the pin or the bookmark.
These will be designed by an actual graphics designer, and not by me, a mere writer. But the final designs should look quite similar to the designs show above.
First Chapter of Book 2!
If we meet the $900 stretch goal challenge, I'll include the first chapter of Mannahatta Series Book 2: CITY IN MY HANDS at the end of the first novel, giving everyone a glimpse of what is to come.
Thank you to all my amazing supporters!
Hi everyone! I'm a writer. My name is Thomas More. Let me tell you about why I'm crowdfunding.
All my life I've dreamed of creating a series that transports readers to another time and place. To witness sights and sounds of something they've never seen before but which might enchant them and make them want to stay. To meet and love the characters and watch them grow and change. To learn about the people, places, and technologies in this new world.
I'm learning all the time about this art, craft, and business known as writing.
I want to achieve something very simple and very elusive. I want to make my readers happy! I want to create a cast of characters, conflicts, events, and worlds my future readers can see in their mind's eye and care about. I want my readers to be at the edge of their seat, frantically turning pages to see what happens next. Not just because of plot mechanizations alone, but because of true concern for the characters. I want to create both heroes and villains worth my readers' time, that are substantial characters, and that readers will want to continue their journey with them, book after book!
CITY AT MY FEET (Mannahatta Series: Book One) is a whole new adventure for me.
I want to deliver the best book I can with real emotion, conflict, stakes, and stories. This one builds off of the original peoples of America's East Coast, the Lenape (len-AH-pay, "the true people") and honors that heritage, but which takes a view of that culture 400+ years later and adds something new.
I need your help!
I need your help to create these worlds and characters, their wants and needs, and the conflict – and love – that develops along the way to help ensure I create a compelling, thoughtful, moving, and exciting story – the first book of a great series, if all goes well! Here's what that looks like:
Book 1 (2020): City at My Feet
Book 2 (2020): City in My Hands
Book 3 (2021): City in My Eyes
Book 4 (2021): City in My Heart
CITY AT MY FEET (Mannahatta Series: Book 1) explores the collision between two cultures very different from each other:
- the modern culture is NYC in the very near future, and
- the original culture, living above the city in an (up until now) invisible other part of the multiverse —but which has evolved into a futuristic culture, still true to the original ways
The people above the city mix a Hobbit-like pastoral existence with futuristic technologies, such as:
- travel portals (Star Trek)
- machines and gear (Star Wars)
- hybrid weapons (Horizon Zero Dawn)
Think James Cameron’s Avatar meets Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and you can begin to get the picture!
This book borrows from the history and legends of the Lenape (len-AH-pay) who lived along the east coast of the U.S. 500 years ago. The protagonist is Sakima (sah-KEE-mah), a smart, brave, and beautiful leader.
I want to do the project justice and create a compelling story, wonderful characters, and a brand new world — all while honoring the Lenape history and legacy. To this end, I will consult with Native American (Wichita, Kiowa, Pawnee) artist and writer, TD Hill (The Age of Myths and Legends and The Warrior Race). He'll do his best to help ensure that the Lenape people, past and present (and from the future!) are well represented.
I’m at the world-building phase right now, creating the characters, the conflicts, the outline, and the plot points. And the actual writing of the novel itself has begun.
I hope you’ll join me as I create these worlds and characters, their wants and needs, and the conflict – and love – that develops between them. I'm ready to write!
My team consists of me, the author, a developmental editor, a copy editor, and proofreader, as well as a number of advisors. Details about the main team members follow.
I love great words, the perfect turn of a phrase, and a fun, compelling story — whether I'm reading it or writing it. It's my dream to create a book that matters to people, maybe even changes their lives. I also am an obsessive native of New York City and just recently made the journey "home."
Recently, while strolling through the streets of this great city, I happened to glance up (with my usual post-NYC move smile on my face) and this image hit me of a primeval island floating above the modern city.
I immediately had this vision of the original inhabitants having become an advanced society in a different way and existing on a different plane. In my novel, these two worlds finally meet, with rewarding and tragic consequences. I'm eager to get this first novel out to you this year and then to complete the other three books in the series in 2020 and 2021.
By the way, in case you're wondering, "Can he get this done?" Well, let me tell you. I've been a paid writer my whole life (marketing, copywriting, and technical and business writing) and have written and published five books under various pen names.
I've been through the research, draft, rewrite, edit, proofreading, and publishing stages for each and every book. I know how to do this, how hard it is, how dependent it is on having good people behind you, and how rewarding it can be.
At Double Vision, they believe that just one pair of eyes is never enough. My copyeditor, Danielle Poiesz, provides freelance developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, and outline-review services for independent clients and publishing companies.
Danielle provides freelance proofreading and cold-reading services and reading group guides for fiction titles published by St. Martins Press, Tor/Forge Books, Simon & Schuster, Kirkus, and Riptide Publishing.
Books Danielle has edited have been nominated for numerous awards, including RITA awards, Lambda Literary Awards, PRISM, and NERFA awards, as well as received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, RT, and more. She'll not only make my novel error-free, but a much better story thanks to her input.
Matt Turano has edited hundreds of books, many of them bestsellers, including authors such as Britt Michaelian, Katharina Gerlach, Brenda Carre, Tessa Tucker, and Holly Lisle! Matt will do a full soup-to-nuts developmental edit to be sure this story sings.
He is truly amazing at reading a manuscript, discovering how and why the story has gone wrong, and then showing the writer the problems and explaining exactly why they are problems, asking questions about the weak points, and offering possible courses of action that will permit the writer to fix what's broken.
Damon Freeman and his talented team at Damonza.com will create the perfect cover for City At My Feet, a cover better than any I could get anywhere else on the planet. In fact, the cover you see here on this campaign page is a draft — almost completed, but still a draft. Damon has won numerous awards and his work has been the cover art for bestselling authors including JR Rain (Moon Dance), Denise Grover Swank (Up Shute Creek), Jimmy Sangster (Bad Karma), and Betty Lee Crosby (The Summer of New Beginnings). He provides that first "wow" factor when readers seek a great tale to be absorbed in and enchanted by.
You can see the different reward levels on the right side of this page. But here's a graphic to help you understand the different levels a bit better, perhaps:
Note that as you give a little more, you get a LOT more. From the ebook at five dollars, to the ebook PLUS a thank you in the acknowledgements page at $10, to all that PLUS the paperback shipped to you for $25, and all that PLUS an additional ebook of short stories with the characters from City At My Feet at $40. Everyone who contributes gets a reward of value.
The highest level is Leader (nikanixit) for only $100. Contributing at that level gets two special rewards. You'll receive all of the above PLUS a prequel short novella based on the characters in City At My Feet plus TWO paperbacks (give one as a gift!) shipped to you, PLUS a collector's edition, full-size poster of the cover artwork!
Backing this project helps me in two ways. First, it enables me to make the novel better, and it helps to get the book into the hands of the readers it’s meant for. How? In the first way, it allows me to get the editorial help every writer needs (but often can’t afford). In the second way, by funding this project to success, it makes me accountability to all of you—and to all the readers this story deserves to have in the future. In other words, your support is crucial to making City At My Feet a success—in every sense of that word.
Specifically, your backing this project enables the following key processes to occur:
- developmental editing
- line and copy editing
- obtaining ISBN and LCCN (Library of Congress) numbers, paying for a “blurb” (the promotional text you see on online retailers and on the back cover of books) and other marketing-related fees
- envelopes, packing materials, postage
- extra review copies
The more money this campaign raises, the further down the list we can go. And don’t worry. Over the months ahead, I'll be presenting you with the details of this whole process through backer-only updates.
Risks and challenges
With any publishing project, there are always anticipated risks and challenges, such as delays along the path in the editing, rewriting, and publishing cycles. These are to be expected, but hopefully we'll avoid them! My team is the best of the best as far as editing and book creation. As for myself, this is not my first time through this process. I've written five novels and I know how to stay focused and meet deadlines. While there might be unforeseen delays, you will receive this novel and all the gifts you signed up for. The milestones and deadlines built into the schedule for this book are reasonable and achievable. If we hit any bumps in the road, you will be informed promptly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
