About

As graffiti writers ourselves, we knew that only actual participants in the graffiti scene could articulate the phenomena in this way. We knew that no one could talk about the adventures and lifestyles associated with the graffiti life like the individuals who actually lived it first-hand. Their memories, images, and words allow readers to better understand this otherwise covert subculture. As they are collected in eras, these diverse reflections will finally give you a sense of who these prolific street artists were.

As eager curators of the L.A. Graffiti scene, we approached Volume One and Two, first and foremost, as fans of graffiti. But because of our respective roles in the graffiti scene, we were able to make contact with these writers, allowing them to open up and tell their stories in a comfortable environment to an audience that understood their every word and emotion. Along with our editor Stefano Bloch who is also a member of the graffiti community and Wendy Peng who has designed many publications for galleries and museums, we deliver these reflections to you in a condensed but never censored format.

OUR START - Volume One, 1983 to 1988

In 2005, Wisk and Relax solely took on the responsibility to document, design, finance and publish The History of Los Angeles Graffiti Art Volume One - 1983 to 1988. It was an amazing accomplishment for two L.A. based graffiti artists to take on this responsibility without the backing of a Publisher.

The History of L.A. Graffiti Art - Volume One was published in 2006.

We were fortunate to premiere Volume One at the MOCA Grand Avenue Los Angeles in April 2006.

This book not only represented the infancy stages of the of Los Angeles Graffiti art movement, but allowed the reader to truly understand this culture through first-hand accounts by the writers that lived and contributed to the Los Angeles Graffiti art movement between the years of 1983 to 1988.

Our first release The History of Los Angeles Graffiti Art Volume One - 1983 to 1988, takes you back to the first era where a group of young teenagers discovered a new way to communicate with each other outside the civilian world called Los Angeles. From the Westside to the Eastside, writers came from different lifestyles and environments. These true pioneers found ways not only to express themselves through their art, but to escape the dangerous elements of their neighborhoods.

Some writers exchanged gangs for crews, and guns for spray cans. Others were fortunate enough to experience the movement without having to go through the struggle of living in areas prone to poverty. One thing is for sure - they all had something in common; they wanted to understand this new art form and its language that was in its infancy stages that would change the writing on the walls forever.

OUR CONTINUATION - Volume Two, 1989 to 1994

Here we are 9 years later and have completed the design and development of The History of Los Angeles Graffiti Art Volume Two - 1989 to 1994. It was an amazing undertaking that took over 4 years to complete. The most important part of the project is the printing of Volume Two. This is where you come in to support and make this project a reality.

The History of L.A. Graffiti Art - Volume Two documents Los Angeles graffiti art from 1989-1994. This classic blackbook-inspired, faux leather hardcover will have a silkscreen title and an inset image of our iconic downtown freeway interchange.

We continued with this project because we knew that a total, unbiased, and thorough history of L.A. Graffiti was not completed and had to be told. This book, as our first release The History of Los Angeles Graffiti Art Volume One - 1983 to 1988, represents the culture by providing graffiti writers with a space to speak for themselves, about themselves, about their subculture, and about the times and spaces in which they participated in what would eventually become a global street art movement.

This volume illustrates just some of that street knowledge. It is set in time between 1989 and 1994, and geographically framed in the city of Los Angeles by the 210 Freeway to the north, the 91 to the south, the 605 to the east, and Pacific Coast Highway to the west. These are some of the stories that express the history of graffiti art as one of the most visible and aesthetically expressive cultural and social movement of all time. This book includes some of the stories that personalize the otherwise cryptic world of “all city” bombing, innovative piecing, and the “dark days” of graffiti.

It was during the years represented in this volume, 1989-1994, that an entire city would become fixated on “taggers.” This book provides a glimpse of how many of the most prolific, talented, and notorious writers reminisce about what many consider to be the most important era of graffiti in L.A. in terms of exposure and innovation. Writers were not yet producing graffiti as part of an effort to produce profit, and for better or worse, graffiti was still being done for the sake of base values like fame and excitement as writers were inspired by their desire to contribute to the image of the city.

Above all, what unites the contributors in this volume on Los Angeles graffiti art is their shared enthusiasm for the city and the practice of producing graffiti. In each of the testimonials included in this volume, the urban environment serves as a backdrop to the various styles of piecing and methods of writing graffiti that have come to inform the global graffiti and street art movements. The life of the city also provides the subtext to these personal stories, recollections, and reflections. The writers represented in this book share a love and respect for the city and the images created therein.

The flow of Volume Two will be similar to it's predecessor - separating each year will be a gallery overview and a historic introduction with large full-color images of the city and artists.

OUR COMMITMENT

Authors Robert “Wisk” Alva and Robert “Relax” Reiling.
Authors Robert “Wisk” Alva and Robert “Relax” Reiling.

Before our first release, Los Angeles graffiti art has never been thoroughly documented, including the actual writers’ images and personal stories. Graffiti writing is as sacred as a religion to most writers, and is a life-changing event to others. Graffiti art is a unique expression of what we all feel. It invokes passion and pride, and lets everyone know who we are, and what we stand for and believe in.

We have been humbled as custodians of the graffiti scene, realizing that this book reflects the history of a city and a movement as much as it showcases the stories of personal expression and outlaw antics on the streets of L.A.

We thank you for your support towards this project and to our culture.

Risks and challenges

Our first release, The History of Los Angeles Graffiti Art Volume One - 1983 to 1988, was an enormous undertaking and an amazing accomplishment. It was the vision and hard work of Wisk and Relax, with contributions from the entire Los Angeles graffiti art movement, that brought Volume One to life.

We are now fortunate to have completed the entire development and design of The History of Los Angeles Graffiti Art, Volume One 1989 to 1994 and are ready to print this amazing book.

As we experienced with Volume One, there are always risks and challenges that have to be considered when taking this final step to print and distribute any major publication. We take the entire development of this book very serious and have an amazing team that focuses on the integrity of its content, design, editing, and soon, its printing. This experience and attention to detail greatly reduces our risk and increases the success of this project.

When any book goes to print, the entire production process can take from 4 to 5 weeks. We understand the risks and take into account our positive experiences, the exceptional quality of our first book and commitment to delivering on time and on budget.

Wisk and Relax consider every aspect of this project and make a commitment to you, the investor, that the final product will make you will feel confident in your decision and investment. We will always keep you updated with the project and milestone dates. You are not only investing in a product, but in the archiving and presentation of one of the world's most discussed and debated cultures of all time.
