Why are there hundreds of food magazines but none about the future of food?
With your help, that can change today. I’m LinYee and I’m the founder and editor of MOLD, a platform about designing the future of food. Since 2013 we’ve published over 400 stories online, curated an exhibition, published a newspaper, hosted a pop-up food cafe and produced a beautiful, versatile kitchen product. We’ve grown our readership to over 20 countries, made 40,000 friends on Instagram and Facebook and met amazing chefs, designers, scientists and farmers along the way.
Now we’re ready to take our ideas to print.
By the year 2030, the United Nation predicts that there will be more people on this planet than we can feed. Technology and science can change how and what we eat, but design is critical in bringing these ideas together to create products that are elegant, intelligent and useful in combatting the coming food crisis. It is now more urgent than ever to engage in this conversation about the future of food.
By backing our project, you’ll help launch the first print magazine dedicated to the future of food. You'll provide the seed funding to research, write and commission artwork for our debut issues—and, of course, you’ll get some fun, collaborative products from our generous community.
MOLD's Debut Issue
Issue 01: Designing the Human Microbiome is almost done and it will be a groundbreaking, 100+ page full-color glossy magazine with 20 stories featuring the work of talented chefs and designers including:
We’ll be discussing everything from kimchi philosophy to natural wine, sewer robots to Japanese toilets, synthetic biology to fungal futures and how these ideas might help us feed a hungry planet in the near future.
Heavy-hitting designers are not just our subjects but they’re also our collaborators. Issue 01 is being designed by the talented team of Eric Hu and Matt Tsang who have created a type treatment and unique system for showcasing these ideas.
Let's change the conversation together.
We’re thrilled about the opportunity to explore topics around the future of food through issue-specific deep dives. We’ve planned the themes for the first six issues and are already working on Issue 02: A Place at the Table which will explore experimental utensils, virtual reality dining, nomadic furniture and more. If we reach our funding goal, we will produce the following issues:
- 02: A Place at the Table - experimental utensils, virtual reality dining, furniture, synaesthesia, dining rituals
- 03: Waste Not Want Not - reducing food waste, edible packaging
And it will be the seed money to work on more issues including:
- 04: Kitchen Confidential - smart kitchen, big data, custom meal kits, food "technology" in the home
- 05: New Agriculture - personal produce, lab-grown meats, insect farms
- 06: Terra Nova - farming on Mars, astronaut food, climate cuisine
There are a variety of costs associated with producing a print magazine.
Your support will allow us to:
Print Issue 01
Research and write stories for Issue 02 and 03
Hire illustrators and photographers to create images for Issue 02 and 03
Build a foundation for the future: we’d like to publish two print issues a year and reaching our goal will help set us up to do that.
We wouldn't be able to do this without you. Since we started MOLD, we have been an advertising-free platform solely dedicated to sharing the inspiring work of innovative food designers around the world. Kickstarter is an incredible opportunity to connect with people like you who are interested in the future of food. Plus, it'll provide seed funding for our print efforts.
When we launched MOLD in 2013, we didn't anticipate the interest and support in our independent media platform—it has been a humbling and exhilarating ride. We are so thankful for all the designers, farmers, scientists and artists who have trusted us to share their stories with you.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this campaign a reality. We couldn't have done this without the support of our collaborators.
And most importantly, THANK YOU for liking, commenting and sharing stories with us. We're so thrilled to count you as part of this community.

Risks and challenges
Even though this is the first issue of MOLD Magazine, the team behind it has been making magazines for years including stints at The FADER, Core77, Pin-Up Magazine, Theme, The New York Times Style Magazine and Verso Books and more. Johnny Drain, the co-editor for Issue 01, holds a PhD in Material Science and conducted research at NOMA’s famed Nordic Food Lab.
We have identified a printer for Issue 01 and have begun researching collaborators and stories for Issue 02: A Place at the Table.
Additionally, our vendors and distribution for all of our collaborative reward products are in place and ready to go.
If we reach our funding goal, we can guarantee three solid issues of MOLD Magazine and delivery on all rewards. This fundraising effort is seed money for us to get this print magazine off the ground but we’ll continue to look for sponsorship for Issues 04 and beyond.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
