Who is Thirteen50?
Thirteen50 is a leather company with a passion to create quality leather goods, made in the USA. The saying, "they don't make em' like they used to" is said far too often in this day in age. This is sad, but so very true. At Thirteen50 we wanted to do as our ancestors did, and make a quality product at an affordable price (not to mention, offering a killer traditional look).
For the past 8 months we have been building prototype bags, wallets, cases, and belts with our initial goal to launch our complete product line at once. However, we are still field testing our bags and cases and we have decided to make our Kickstarter debut and launch our everyday belt line!
From a company who stands by their word, each Thirteen50 product comes with a Lifetime Warranty and a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. These words speak volumes in regards to the confidence we have in our products and we do not take these claims lightly.
We are Thirteen50.
Quality leather goods to last a lifetime. Made here, in the land of the free.
Why back our products?
This answer is simple, materials and craftsmanship. We are not reinventing the wheel with a new modern design intended to keep your trousers up better, because this is simply not possible. Your pants either stay up, or they don't. What is possible, is saving hundreds of dollars on poorly constructed belts over the course of your lifetime.
Sure there are other established companies out there, even on Kickstarter now, who offer good products. However they send their US leather south of the border for manufacturing. We make our quality products right here in the USA, and manage to keep our costs down to offer you the best price. All products come with a lifetime warranty, as well as a 100% satisfaction guarantee. We are all about risk free investments. If your purchase does not meet your expectations, simply send it back. We will refund your reward back to you, no questions asked.
Our business model is simple. Make a great looking quality product that will last a lifetime. Offer it at an affordable price. And have it Made in America. That's it.
"The thick leather feels great and looks fantastic."
"This is a belt you could tow your truck home with"
"This belt, which definitely meets our Buy It for Life criteria, is backed by a lifetime guarantee, but it is designed to outlast you, so don’t worry about it."
Our keys to success:
Step 1-Thick USA Leather
A major key to our success will be our materials. All hides are thick, full grain vegetable tanned USA leather. The bridle leather we use is drum dyed and hot stuffed with oils. Drum dying allows full penetration of the dye into the fibers, making the color much more durable compared to a dye sprayed onto the surface.
Each hide will be hand selected and inspected by us, and if it doesn't meet our standards, we simply don't use it. The leather we use is thicker and more durable than your typical belt. Modern day belts without a lifetime warranty are typically around 6-8 ounces where our belts are 12-14 ounces. Almost double the thickness of the current standard.
Don't be fooled by industry terms that trick consumers into thinking they are getting the best materials. To cut cost, many belt manufactures are layering leather and stitching the two pieces together, using thinner material, or a synthetic material that looks like leather. All of these options are great for cutting cost, but are terrible for longevity and prone to failing over time. At Thirteen50, we use only the best part of the hide so we can confidently guarantee our product for life.
Step 2- Quality Hardware
Average belts come with weak Zinc Alloy buckles that fail and oxidize over time. If we were in the business to give away free belts via warranty replacement, this is the type of hardware we'd use. But being that we are not in the charity belt business, solid brass it is! We don't use thread, snaps, or rivets to attach our buckles, those options are more prone to failure over time. Instead we use strong Chicago screws, 4 of them to be exact. Using Chicago screws also gives the consumer the option to change the buckle if they so desire. This high quality hardware has a high quality finish that won't flake or fade, maintaining its classy look just like day one.
Step 3- Passionate Experienced Craftsman
By far the most important key to our success will come from our craftsmanship. As mentioned above, our attention to detail and passion to deliver quality leather products is what we are all about. That's why teaming up with a local manufacturer, who we have built a relationship with and trust, will be a huge part of our success. Our local manufacturer and our entire Thirteen50 team are on the same page as far as the expected level of quality. Our team will be hands on and working side by side to ensure our desired outcome from start to finish. A product will NOT be shipped out unless it meets our standards. Period.
So what do we need from you?
After the campaign is successful funded we will send out a survey. In the survey you will be able to select sizes, colors, and hardware options for your reward. We offer sizes 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48 and 50. To properly size your belt, measure your waist around your pants where your belt typically sits. If you are in between two sizes of belts, it is best to round up. Our belts have five holes spaced out in one inch increments. Belt sizes are measured to the center hole so you will have 4 inches of adjustment from you initial measurement.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest risk is the leather. Vegetable tanned leather takes 4-6 weeks to produce, so depending on the amount of backers this could be a potential issue. Our tannery is on standby and waiting for us to give them the go-a-head and are prepared for a large order. Just incase we get a substantially larger backing, we also have a secondary supplier if a problem should arise. We feel that our above timeline is accurate and we have put the necessary back-up plans in effect to uphold our deadlines.
