About

Theater is expensive, hard to plan for, and it's easier to stay home and stream a movie. Which is why I'm building Thirdwing.

Thirdwing is a theater company with its own online platform: plays are written directly for streaming, followed by live stage productions that will continue the story or discover a different angle - expanding and enriching the whole experience.

It's a super inexpensive way for audiences to get engaged immediately in the work of the theater company. Every four months you're subscribed earns another free ticket our next live show in NYC.

First reading of "The Female Genius" - a streaming series to be adapted as a live show.
First reading of "The Female Genius" - a streaming series to be adapted as a live show.

I was writing a play. In my deep research dive I came across so many inspiring and fascinating things: interviews with August Wilson, Edward Albee, and others. And then I learned about the brief history of plays for television, including CBS's original "Twelve Angry Men," and the amazing BBC adaptation of Caryl Churchill's "Top Girls."

Theater and film - seeing the way these two art forms merged got me really excited. John Cassavetes, Mikes Leigh and Nichols, and Julie Taymor infused their filmmaking with theatrical expertise. But it's all seemed to flow in one direction: from stage to screen... What about the other way? Could it be more holistic? Could it be related to how we watch things these days?

Excerpt from our master class interview with John Turturro.

The platform will include behind-the-scenes documentary content as well as master class interviews with renowned theater artists. After all, I started this because I was trying to get help writing a play.

A stage has two wings: for actors and crew. We are creating a third, for you, the audience; from behind the stage (writing and rehearsal), out into the seats, and beyond, to your couch or bed - connecting you to the story AND the process, adding a new dimension. This "wing" is yours to explore every part of what theater can be.

See our rehearsal and process with documentary-style content.
See our rehearsal and process with documentary-style content.

Most of our funding will go straight to our first productions. What really counts are the stories we plan to tell, and how well we can tell them:

Emily Dickinson, one of many brilliant writers portrayed in "The Female Genius"
Emily Dickinson, one of many brilliant writers portrayed in "The Female Genius"

A darkly comic look at the struggle of having great talent in a sexist world. In a series of short plays, a dying Emily Dickinson verbally abuses her caring sister, Mary Shelley procrastinates on writing Frankenstein by seducing Lord Byron, JK Rowling can't pay the babysitter, Ayn Rand encourages a young acolyte to assault her, and Zora Neale Hurston’s pro-segregation speech upends white expectations.

This is a filmed series followed by a live theatrical adaptation.

A Great Depression-era drama about the women-only ink & paint department, known as The Nunnery, rushing to finish Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs with very little time, very little pay, and no air conditioning. A talented young painter begins to have strange thoughts about herself after painting thousands of frames of the original Disney Princess.

This is a live stage production leading up to a sequel streaming series about Walt Disney's brush with madness when his studio nearly falls apart in 1941.

A political comedy about a pessimist and an optimist who reunite ten years after International Relations school, and struggle to stay friends as they try to get things done at the UN.

This is a streaming series to be followed by a live staged production that explores a different angle of the story.

I'm just realizing as I write this out that all the protagonists in every project are women. I didn't do that on purpose, but if I had, this would be the paragraph about how I'm trying to tell stories about strong, intelligent woman to help with representation. But I'm not. I just think these stories are cool. And if there's a wholesome, societally healthy byproduct, then I'm happy with that. For a second I thought maybe I needed to make something with more men in it just to find a balance, but then I realized that if this were the other way around, no one would bat an eyelash. Anyway, welcome to my brain. Let's move along, shall we?

Cameron Bossert (founder, creative director) is a Brooklyn native film director and playwright who made his first short film, Prehistoric Battle, at age 6. His latest feature, Jewtah, is set for a streaming release through Gravitas Ventures. In high school he wrote, scored, and directed Out of Ashes, a two-hour musical play about the effect of 9/11 on a New York advertising executive, excerpts of which were featured on PBS. He designed and executed the filmic elements for the off-Broadway run of Yasmina Reza's A Spanish Play, directed by John Turturro at Classic Stage Company.

Rachel Carey (playwright, The Female Genius) is a playwright, filmmaker, and novelist based in the NYC area. Her debut feature as writer/director, Ask for Jane, starring Cody Horn, premiered at the 2018 Hamptons International Film Festival and is currently in a limited theatrical release. Her first full-length play, Phases, was nominated for Best Play at the 2012 Thespis Festival. Cul-de-Sac, (co-writer), premiered at the Cherry Lane Theater in 2014. Her debut novel, Debt, was published by Silver Birch Press and optioned as a TV series for ABC by Ellen Pompeo's production company, Calamity Jane. Her one-hour TV pilot, Takers, was nominated for Best Pilot at the Hoboken Film Festival. She has an M.Ed from Harvard and an MFA in Film Directing from NYU, and has taught at several colleges and universities including Yale University.

Abe Altman (Thirdwing executive producer) became a producer in 2016 shortly after retiring from the accounting film that he founded, Altman Greenfield Selvaggi. For many years AGS served clients in the entertainment industry such as John Goodman, Jimmy Fallon, Tom Cruise, and countless others. His first project as executive producer was the feature comedy, Jewtah.

Max Nadilo (production designer, The United Nations) studied at the Politecnico di Milao in Milan and the University of Western Australia. For 4 years he worked as an architect at Stephen Wang & Associates in New York, and in production design under Mark White (Emmy-winner, The Handmade's Tale). Nadilo brings his architectural knowledge and strong design sensibility to the ambitious open-set approach to The United Nations: Pale Cast of Thought.

Wilhelm Kuhn (cinematographer, The Female Genius) is a Paris-based director of films and music videos. After studying at both the Institute for Political Science in Lille, and The University of Kent, he completed an MA in Filmmaking at the London Film School, under the chairmanship of Mike Leigh. His films include The Porter Brother (2016) and the award-winning The Nephew (2018), currently on the festival circuit.

Taylor Donofrio (choreographer, Disney Girls) is the founder of the Donofrio Dance Company, creating contemporary dance works that stretch, magnify, and test what we understand about ourselves and our place in the world. Linking physicality, impulse, and intellect, DDC’s work is informed by their research of social sciences, technology, and collaboration with artists of different mediums, uncovering and revealing our most vulnerable selves, and offering a new outlook to our human experience.

Todd Thaler (casting, The United Nations) started as a Production Assistant for Rollins, Joffe, Morra & Brezner, a company known for managing the careers of such clients as Robin Williams, David Letterman and Billy Crystal. As a Casting Director, his credits include Luc Besson’s Leon: The Professional, Todd Field’s Little Children, Sidney Lumet’s Running on Empty, Ed Harris' directorial debut Pollock, Barbra Streisand’s The Mirror Has Two Faces, James Foley’s Perfect Stranger, Irwin Winkler’s Night and the City, John Turturro’s Mac, Illuminata, Romance & Cigarettes, and Fading Gigolo, James Mangold’s Heavy and Cop Land, and Wayne Wang’s Because of Winn-Dixie, and Maid in Manhattan.

Reed Adler (producer, The United Nations) is the Head of Production at New York production company, Silver, and has produced several films including the Emmy-Nominated Long Shot (outstanding short documentary), about a man wrongly accused for murder proving his innocence through raw footage of a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode. Other projects include the TV movie Sober, and documentary Anosmia.

I already have so much amazing support from talented artists and a great team coming together and giving their time and energy to make this all happen because they believe in the projects. It's truly an "If you build it they will come" sort of a situation.

Funding from you will go to paying those who are already working hard at the different projects. They also will go to:

  • Hiring crew
  • Renting space and equipment
  • Insurance
  • Food! Glorious food!
  •  PR, so that our offering can be discovered by people who might love our projects and platform!

There are also certain fixed costs involved with developing the online platform to make sure this is available to watch on devices beyond your computer.

I have been saving money from my own freelance work as an editor, cameraman, and composer. Coupled with the amount I raise with your help, I am confident I can get the company off the ground and get customers on board.

Thank you for your time!

Risks and challenges

First of all, I pledge to focus on quality over quantity. If we can make two of our first-year productions STUNNING, but it means we have to wait longer to make a third one, that is what we'll do. Thirdwing is ambitious, but I am always gauging how small or how big it can be at the beginning.

I have great support, but in the worlds of both filmmaking and theater, it requires great scheduling and coordination between many people, and timelines are often stretched. So far, the planning and testing phases have gone according to schedule give or take one month. But as productions kick into high gear, things get complicated and it often has an effect on how long things take.

Our main priority is to get the ball rolling, to look out for where we may need to be more modest, in order to get our first production up and running and the platform easy to use.
