Odissea Mythica it's suggested for mature audiences, includes some soft nudity (censored in the cards preview).

This deck is a Thirdway Industries Exclusive: after this campaign it will be sold exclusively on www.thirdwayindustries.com

Retail price after campaign will be around $50.

Pearlescent effect on faces

With Odissea Mythica, I will be testing a special feature I have been thinking about for a long time: covering the white background of the cards with a small percentage of gold Pantone metallic ink. I've never tried this before, so it's a fairly unpredictable effect - in the worst case, the card background will be just slightly darker, in the best case it will be darker but pearlescent (shiny).

Homer's Odyssey is one of the major ancient Greek epic poems, with an extremely complex story - it’s not possible to summarize it in this in this section.

Ulysses travelled 10 years in the Mediterranean Sea - his journey can be divided in 12 main stops. I have prepared this page that show all the stops from Troy to Ithaca.

Below you’ll find an explanation and my personal notes on the main characters of this project.

Ulysses

Ulysses is probably my favourite greek character. He’s probably the only one who prefers using intellect over strength. He’s not very lucky nor is he honorable at times and he is definitely not a hero. He's just a man that misses his family and wants to go back home to them and is willing to sacrifice everything and everyone to get there.

Minerva

I am the Goddess of Wisdom, Handcraft and Warfare. You are just a mortal, but I’m impressed about what you did. I protect the smart ones. The brave ones. Even the ones who dare challenge a God.

In the Odyssey, Minerva is the most important guardian of Ulysses. She respects him because he’s smart and bold, and he prefer strategy over strength. Minerva protects Ulysses directly only few times - but in fact, every time that Ulysses uses his superior intellect, he’s using Minerva’s blessing.

Neptune

I am the God of Sea, Water and Earthquakes! You’re just a miserable mortal. How you dare challenge my wrath?

Neptune is Ulysses' true enemy. There is an incredible disproportion between Neptune’s strength and Ulysses', which is one of the aspects of the Odyssey I like the most. Ulysses is basically one man versus the world. He spent 10 years trying to get back home to his family all the while, being tormented by Neptune, who sent monsters and natural disasters of any kind for prevent his return to Ithaca. Nevertheless, Ulysses, with his intelligence and the help of his friends, perserviered and managed to return to his native island, though not without sacrifices and scars.

Neptune represents all the problems we’ll find on our way.

Circe

“You call me witch, but I just reveal the true identity of men.”

I was always intrigued by the sorceress Circe. She is a strong, malicious woman - not totally evil, but neither is she good.

At the beginning, she was Ulysses' enemy, but after she failed to turn him into a pig, she changed her mind and became an important ally - probably the most important one after Minerva. She knew how to avoid the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis.

The legend says she came from the Mount Circeo, located in Italy, near Rome. In ancient times, it was supposed to be an island.

Circe was, actually, the first Queen of Hearts I’ve ever designed - she was the QoH of The Evil Deck.

Polyphemus

The Cyclops, Polyphemus, is one of the most scary antagonists in the Odyssey. He is emmense, strong and evil. Luckily, he’s not very smart, so Ulysses manages to fool him with wine and a sharp pole. Polyphemus is the main cause of Ulysses curse - Blinding him made the God Neptune, his father, very angry. I think Polyphemus represents the challenges we have to face everyday in our life - they seem (no 's') huge and scary, but in the end, they can be beaten with knowledge, intelligence...and a bit of luck. Polyphemus Island is Trinacria, the modern, beautiful, Sicily.

Scylla and Charybdis

Scylla was a beautiful Naiad that was turned into a scary monster by Circe (or Amphitrite, in other versions) because of jealousy. Charybdis was also a Naiad and the daughter of Neptune and Amphitrite. She was always hungry, and was turned into a huge monster as a punishment for her voracity by Jupiter. I’ve represented Scylla and Charybdis as evil Naiads, the soul inside the monster. Scylla and Charybdis represent the worst challenges we have to face in our lives: the ones that can’t be avoided and there isn’t a real solution against them. Ulysses lost his last ship, all his men and almost his life because of these two.

Calypso

Calypso is a beautiful nymph, prisoner on the island of Ogygia. Calypso is a symbol of the final temptation for Ulysses: even more beautiful than Penelope or any other human woman, immortal and in love with him. But, Ulysses' love for his wife, Penelope, and his home, was stronger, and after 7 years, Hermes convinced Calypso to let him go.

Penelope

Penelope is Ulysses' wife - she waited for him for 10 years and she represents Faith and Patience. Like her husband, Penelope is smart and brave: she managed to avoid a remarriage with one of the Suitors.

Siren

Ulysses could have plugged his ears with wax to avoid to being lured by the Siren’s Call, but he decided he wanted to hear it, even if it was extremely risky and everyone advised against it. The point is that Ulysses is very curious and he craves knowledge, no matter the cost - he’s not only an hero, but also an explorer and a daredevil.

Jupiter

Jupiter, the most powerful God of the Olympus, though influencing his journey, never really directly involved himself. He mainly acted by allowing Minerva and Neptune to interfere with his journey. The only time he directly got involved was when Ulysses' men killed his sacred cattle to feast for surviving Scylla. The wrath of Jupiter was a devastating storm, that shoved back the last ship of Ulysses directly into Charybdis’ mouth.

New - Saggezza and Tempesta

Saggezza and Tempesta
Saggezza and Tempesta

Saggezza is the coin that celebrate Minerva, and it represent Wisdom. This is for the ones who plan, think and act with logic; for the ones who prefer strategy over muscles. Ulysses kept those coins to remember to himself his strongest weapon: his intelligence. "Saggezza" means "Wisdom" in Italian.

Tempesta is the coin who celebrate Neptune, and it represent Passion. This is for the ones who act without think, for the physical, strong ones who never hesitate. This coin also represent the blind, irrational faith in the ones we love. Ulysses kept those coins for remember how powerful his enemies are, and also who's waiting for him at the end of his long journey. "Tempesta" means "Storm" in Italian.

Side notes on Odissea

Homer's Odyssey was my first fairy tale. When I was a little kid, instead of Red Hood and Cinderella, my father used to tell me how Ulysses fooled a man-eating cyclope, blinding him with a sharp stick, or how him challenged the Siren’s Call, tied up to his ship’s mast.

Since then, I developed a strong interest in Mythology - not only Greek, but also Norse, Egyptian and Japanese - I also love some of the stories of the Old Testament.

I always imagined myself as one of those heroes, and I always had a crush with all the seductive, tragic and evil women of those stories, like Pandora, Circe and Eva.

With Odissey I’ve merged the themes and the style of Dedalo, Pantheon, SINS and Eva for tell my interpretation of this new story. In my opinion, probably one of the most beautiful stories ever told. I hope you’ll like it!

Odissea is a Thirdway Industries deck, and will be available on Thirdway Store when the campaign will be over.

Printing company

I am evaluating USPCC, EPCC (Taiwan factory) and Cartamundi for printing Odissea Cards. All have pro and cons, there are features of those decks I want to double check with the printing companies before decide.

I also have some options for the boxes, both in Asia and in the USA - all of those worked on my previous boxes (Dedalo, SINS, Eva, Lunatica) and are great options.

The numbers of Minerva/Neptune decks sold in this campaign is one important variable that will influence my decision.

Anyways, all of those are great companies that will grant an awesome result no matter what.

Risks and challenges

I have already completed several Kickstarter campaigns, I have already printed the Evil Deck, Delirium, Omnia, Dedalo, Pantheon, SINS, Eva and Lunatica decks. I have produced 50,000+ decks with a lot of different designs. Everything should go smoothly.

All the layouts are approved and ready to be printed when the campaigns ends.

I am located in Italy, and I can't do the fulfillment directly: I'm using a professional fulfillment center, Gamblers Warehouse. They have already shipped a lot of Kickstarter decks and have a lot of experience in this field.

Of course problems might happen. I can't control other people's actions, but I'll follow every step of the process to avoid problems and I will keep everyone updated.

All the elements shown could be changed and improved. Printed colors could be different from the ones you see on your screen.
