Betrayers is a new series of playing cards by Thirdway Industries, designed by the italian designer Giovanni Meroni.
"Ah, Betrayal! For some, this is the worst Sin that can be done. For us, it's just a way to pursue our dreams."

There are three decks in the Betrayers Series:
- Betrayers Lucis
- Betrayers Tenebra
Betrayers Invictus Limited Edition
Everything will be completely different for each deck. Tuck boxes, back and cards. For example, here is the same court in three different versions:
There are also three different backs - Invictus will have foil on back:
Betrayers Lucis and Tenebra will be printed by USPCC - Betrayers Invictus will be printed by Cartamundi.
"Take what you want"
Betrayers Lucis is inspired by the fierce warriors who betray in plain sight. Treason is not always sneaky: some people turn their coat blatantly. These kind of Betrayers are the scariest because they are aggressive, reckless and violent.
"Trust no one"
Betrayers Tenebra is insprired by the ones who conspire in the darkness. Not all of them are cowards - some are just strategists who wait for the right time to strike. These kinds of Betrayers are the most dangerous since they don't seem like a threat - until is too late.
"Nothing is sacred"
Betrayers Invictus is inspired by the traitors who sacrificed everything to realize their dream. Without friends or enemies, they're invincible.
The Limited Edition will feature:
- [Unlocked] Cold foil on backs!
- Metallic ink on front
- Premium paper, foiled black box
- Made in Belgium by Cartamundi
- Limited Edition - 1777 decks
The Betrayers project is suggested for mature audience, especially the limited edition, which includes some soft nudity on the Q and Jokers cards.
"Standing on a pile of corpses, he slowly put the Crown on his head."
The more "Betrayers" that pledge to this Kickstarter campaign, the more features that will be added to make Invictus, making it even more awesome.
The "First Betrayal" stretch goal unlocked cold foil on the Invictus card backs.
Each suits represents a reason the courts became Betrayers.
Diamonds - Materialists
"Some betray for material possessions, because they crave more and more."
Gold, diamonds and wealth are always a great reason to betray for. Sometimes, even a worthless item is enough to turn someone into a Betrayer, if he desires it.
Clubs - Usurpers
"Some betray for pure power, to raise themselves above everyone else."
Control over others' is one of the most ancient desires of humanity. Some want to be feared. Others want to be worshipped. Others just want to dominate, subduing the whole world.
Hearts - Devotees
"Others betray for someone else: their lovers, their friends, their heroes."
Love is what makes the world go round. When you're in love, you can do anything for your beloved one.
Spades - Egoists
"But usually, the most betrayers do that for themselves. They will sacrifice everyone they love for get what they want."
Egoists are probably the purest Betrayers - they believe in freedom above everything else. They are ready to betray anyone, even themselves, for it.
"There are a few that don’t ever need a reason to betray. They do that just because they’re evil to the bone, just to see others fall."
Jokers in Betrayers are very chaotic - some of them betray just for the sake of it; others didn't realize they're Betrayers at all.
Joker are completely different characters in each deck and will be revealed during and after the campaign.
Aces and Spot Cards
Betrayers Aces resemble the Suit's reason to Betray: Wealth, Power, Love and Freedom.
Spot cards are designed for play - fully custom and big.

For unknown reasons, those coins fascinate people - for this reason, were used often for bribe. The legend says 30 of those were used to buy a Kiss.
Some seek guidance from the Goddess Fortuna - but she rarely responds. Does she even care?
Others work long and hard days, breaking their backs. Will they survive long enough?
Other just wait, wait, and wait. For days, months and years. When they turn back, will they remember why?
We're not like that: we take what is ours, now. Whatever it takes.
Betrayers are zealots, dreamers who don't have compromises or compassion. In order to acheive their goal, they don't hesitate to trample on anything or anyone stands on their way.
The Bewitched King
“I’ve sacrificed everything for you - even myself, my love.”
For her, he betrayed his reign. His family. Even himself. But Kings are fickle. Eventually, he’ll change his mind and will behead his true love.
“I’ve cheated on countless men, but always in the name of love.”
She never killed anyone - but many people, Kings and Knights, died because they were jealous of her. He caused murders, suicides and even wars.
“Yes, I’ve sold myself. But the price was obscene.”
When they paid her, they felt strong. Until she became the most powerful Queen in the realm - and killed them all.
“My homeland, or myself? The choice is easy.”
He fought many battles, and he never lost one. When his side was about to lose, he always turned his coat.
“Life is too short to fight someone else's war”
He was the stronger warrior of the realm. but his sword belonged only to him. When his comrades forced him to fight, he massacred them all.
“When you live in a golden cage of lies, betrayal is an act of heroism.”
She was a revered priestesses - but she never believed anything but herself. But with the favor of Gods, everyone was following her command.
"The shadow is darker and deeper, where the light is strong."
- Lucis will have 1 extra red female Joker (The Vanguard) and 1 double back.
- Tenebra will have 1 extra black male Joker (The Advocate) and 1 double back.
- Invictus will have 2 extra Jokers, black male (The Figure) and red female (The Savior).
The courts of Betrayers are symbolical - they aren't inspired by any specific character. Despite this, I've studied some of the more notorious Betrayers for inspiration. Here are some of the most duplicitous:
The name Judas is synonym of Betrayal. He betrayed his master and friend for a small amount of money. He inspired the Kings of Diamonds.
Delilah seduced Samson just to discover the source of his incredible strength. Her betrayal defeated one of the strongest men in history. She inspired various aspects of the Betrayers Queens and the final reward of this campaign is named after her.
Ephialtes of Trachis
Ephialtes is probably the most infamous traitor of the homeland - he betrayed the 300 Spartans in the Battle of Thermopylae.
Eva and Pandora
Eva and Pandora betrayed humanity for knowledge. These two inspired all of the queens in Betrayers. There is a whole Thirdway Industries deck inspired by Eva.
Marcus Junius Brutus
The most famous Betrayer of ancient Rome, Brutus killed the man who treated him like a son, Julius Caesar. Brutus inspired the jacks of Betrayers, especially the JoC.
Guinevere is the classic example of a queen who betrayed a King for a Knight. She betrayed Arthur with Lancelot, resulting in a lot of deaths and the fall of a kingdom.
Theseus and Ariadne
Ariadne betrayed her family for her lover, Theseus, in his deed to kill his monstrous brother.
Theseus was a hero, but also a true Betrayer. He left Ariadne, his lover and savior, alone on an island.
Helen of Troy
Helen's Betrayal caused a catastrphical war and destroyed men, cities and nations. She caused the Iliad and indirectly, the Odyssey. She inspired the QoH.
Ulysses was a strategist, and often used his superior intelligence to overcome his enemies. He didn't have strong morals and did anything for achieve his goals. His most spectacular victory with the Trojan Horse was a legendary example of betrayal. Ulysses inspired an entire series, Odissea, and a lot of courts in Betrayers, especially the Spades..
Henry had six queens along with a lot of mistresses. His fame came from the fact that he used to behead his wives when he was tired of them.
Have I forgotten anyone? Comment in the project page ;-)
Betrayers theme is deep and full of secret. I won't purposely reveal too much. Watch carefully :-)
"I think the theme of betrayal is strong in the traditional of French playing cards. Where there are crowns, queens and spades, usually there is also poison, blades and broken hearts."
I’ve always imagined that the Queens of a one suit could love a King of another and that Jacks wanted to take the King’s places. I also feel that all of my previous decks themes have been based on Betrayal.
I think that all of us will commit and endure forms of betrayal in the course of our lives. This is bad, but also... normal. This makes us stronger and more aware.
Betrayers are definitely evil, but there is also a positive light in which to view them: in the end, they're hungry dreamers that sacrifice everything and everyone to get what they want.
Please note that I don't endorse betrayal or evil (in any form) and the themes of my decks are fictional - I'm not a bad guy :)
Betrayers is a Thirdway Industries deck, and will be available on Thirdway Store when the campaign will be over.

Risks and challenges
I have already completed numerous Kickstarter campaigns and printed the Evil Deck, Delirium, Omnia, Dedalo, Pantheon, SINS, Eva, Odissea and Lunatica decks which totalled 50,000+ decks in all, so I expect everything to go smoothly.
I am located in Italy, and I can't do the fulfillment directly, so I'm using a professional fulfillment center, Gamblers Warehouse. They have fulfilled dozens of Kickstarter projects and have a lot of experience in this field.
Of course problems might happen. I can't control other people's actions, but I'll follow every step of the process to avoid problems and I will keep everyone updated.
All the elements shown could be modified and improved. Printed colors could be different from the ones you see on your screen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
