This is our fourth campaign here on Kickstarter, and the successes of our previous campaigns have been truly rewarding for us. Thanks to you – our backers – we have become a recognized English book publisher, and we cannot thank you enough. But, most importantly, it has helped us establish a real relationship with our readers. The visibility that Kickstarter has given us, plus the feedback and support that we have received from you, the readers, is very precious to us. Through this new Kickstarter campaign, we hope to continue providing you with our books!
Underneath their fancy covers, our books are filled with pages upon pages of impassioned writing. In addition to looking into the games’ development, they offer an in-depth analysis covering every aspect of the titles in question; their lore, themes, game design, music, and much more. This is in keeping with Third Editions’ editorial line, embodied by the three core concepts that comprise the framework of all of our books: Creation, Universe, and Decryption.
In this way, we endeavor to explain how, why and when these games were made, what they became, and illustrate their importance in a context of popular culture.
The Rise of The Witcher: A New RPG King has been written by Benoît "ExServ" Reinier (author of our visual making-of The Heart of Dead Cells) and is one of our most successful and critically acclaimed books! Benoît Reinier made two trips to Warsaw, Poland, in order to meet the members of CD Projekt RED. The book contains several exclusive interviews of various CD Projekt members such as Marcin Iwiński (co-founder), Konrad Tomaszkiewicz (director), Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz (lead quest designer) and Marcin Blacha (writer).
Based in Toulouse, France, Third Editions is a publishing company founded in 2015 by Mehdi El Kanafi and Nicolas Courcier. Veterans of the video game industry and fascinated by print media since childhood, they combined their passions and co-wrote several books on major series: Zelda: The History of a Legendary Saga, Metal Gear Solid: Hideo Kojima’s Magnum Opus, and The Legend of Final Fantasy VII. Each release is a comprehensive record produced with true passion and the utmost care for accuracy. Third Editions has now published 60 books in France, all dedicated to the video game industry and pop culture, and is now localizing select titles for the enjoyment of readers around the world.
Our first Kickstarter was a thrilling success. Thanks to you, we have managed to translate 14 books from our French-language bestsellers, including The Legend of Kingdom Hearts, The Legend of Final Fantasy (VI, VII & VIII), Zelda: The History of a Legendary Saga (Volumes 1 & 2), Dark Souls: Beyond the Grave (Volumes 1 & 2), but also Metal Gear Solid: Hideo Kojima’s Magnum Opus, BioShock: From Rapture to Columbia, The Strange Works of Taro Yoko: From Drakengard to NieR: Automata, etc. The amazing enthusiasm from our backers has warmed our hearts, and the feedback we have received so far from our readers has been more than positive!
Risks and challenges
This is our fourth Kickstarter campaign, and that in itself is a testament to our experience. We have delivered all the rewards from our first two campaigns and we have learned a lot in the process. After analyzing our first foray into the fantastic world of crowdfunding, we have made several adjustments, using the second campaign as our basis. Our book-publishing house is located in France, so we have a strong grasp of the production chain here. However, with new territories, come new risks…
- Localization: We have now produced 14 books in English. The process is already quite solid, but we are constantly working on ways to improve it.
- International distribution: We now have two fulfilment centers, one in Europe and one in North America. This reduces delivery delays as well as costs for many of our backers.
- International marketing: The marketing channels we use to publish our French books are not very useful to us when it comes to our books in English. We have found partners to distribute in bookstores, but we are still a relatively small player on the international scene and the task of creating visibility for our products lies upon our shoulders. This is clearly one of the reasons why we are returning to Kickstarter, as this has proved to be a powerful way for us to reach our readers. We plan on extending the number of partners we work with, talking more to journalists, and hopefully, our brilliant backers will continue to support us in this new endeavor.
