The English version of our web site (www.thirdeditions.com) is on its way.
On it, you will be able to order a part of our catalogue in English, one book at a time.
Together, Mehdi and Nicolas have published more than 40 books, all in French. “But it’s a big world out there”, their friend Thomas Bouissaguet (Cartapouille) once told them, “why don’t you translate your books into English? I bet there are readers interested in the US”. He then convinced them by uploading some pictures on Reddit, leading to many enthusiastic reactions. Persuaded by this they decided to get this kickstarter going and have him direct it (and write about himself in the third person).
For the sake of having a neat collection that looks great on a shelf, all the books have the same overall dimensions. But some are thicker than others, like Dark Souls whose French version has 328 pages. Of course, it’s impossible to know the final page count after the translation, but it should be enough to make the book look as serious as it is.

Dark Souls. Beyond Death
If the Dark Souls series managed to seduce players and journalists, it was mainly by word of mouth. It was such a great success that Dark Souls 2 was named “Game of the Year” 2014 by the vast majority of gaming magazines and websites. To date, this saga is one of the most important in the gaming industry. The odd thing is that these games are well known for their difficulty and their cryptic universe. This publication narrates the epic success story, but also describes its gameplay mechanics and its specific lore across more than 300 pages. Characters, plots and the scenario of the three Souls (Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Dark Souls II) are deciphered by Damien Mecheri and Sylvain Romieu, who spent a long year studying these dense and enigmatic games down to the smallest detail.
These two authors are videogames journalists with a lot of experience. Damien has already written three books and Sylvain own a very famous blog dedicated to the Souls saga. You can check the french page of the book or the french Amazon reviews.

Translating a book is nearly as expensive as writing one, and we are working with professional translating companies who are experienced in French to English translations. Each book has around 300 pages, so you can imagine the amount of work this entails. The biggest expense is the printing. The demand for books is bigger in English than in French, so we had to triple the copies printed for each book. And as our books are high-quality, well-protected and have detailed covers, not every printer could meet our expectations. So, of course, expenses went up too. But we wanted to have a printer in the US, so we can show that our commitment goes further than this campaign and really set foot in this market – and we found one! Also, even if we already have a logistics center for our French distribution, we can’t just send book overseas, it’s way too pricey for the reader and takes too long. That’s why we had to find someone to work with who was already located in the US. It’s better when it’s closer!
As soon as we reach the funding goal, we will submit the French texts to the translation company. It should take around two months to translate, as a lot of people will handle the manuscript simultaneously. Then, we will send it all to the printer, who will give it a final check, and then print. 5 weeks later, the books will be ready to ship! As we are shipping from the US, you can expect to receive them in under a week.
So, with an optimistic schedule, all that should take less than 4 months. But we prefer to stay cautious, and have a margin of error so as not to make false promises. That's why we prefer to announce 5 months to have the final result to each and every one of our backers.

Risks and challenges
As we are already a professional publishing house, and since all the books are already written and published in French, there are very few risks. We are used to dealing with printing companies and distributors, and we already have deals that are just waiting for the funding to come in. The translation part is something new for us, but the companies we’re working with are experienced enough not to worry about possible delays and issues.
The only real risk would be being a huge success and that demand exceeds supply. We would be thrilled, but frankly we already have a lot of copies planned for the amount of money we are asking, and that should be covered even if every backer asks for the exact same book. We’re not too worried about it, and we can still adjust the quantities with our printer at the end of the campaign. We’re sure he would love to bill us for more copies if necessary.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
