Blink1Control updates and a PDF guide, more libraries & tools

Posted by ThingM (Creator)

We've fixed up Blink1Control a bit, especially with regards to IFTTT. There was an event timestamp issue that was affecting Windows users mostly.

The updated download links are:

For Windows users, there are some new features like:

  • .NET 4.0 minimum requirement instead of .NET 4.5
  • New "Start Minimized" menu option
  • Diagnostic logging to a log.txt file (will help us debug future issues)

Also, we created a small guide for setting up IFTTT and Blink1Control. It's a very quick walkthrough but should be enough to get you triggering blink(1) with IFTTT events.

Libraries & Tools Updates

There have also been a flurry of new ways of using blink(1)s.

Mac new mail to blink(1) -- timb shows how to use Applescript to connect & blink(1) to flash on new mail

Windows blink(1) status scripts -- YoYo-Pete's incredible collection of scripts for visualizing Outlook new mail, battery charge, HD activity, and CPU use with blink(1)

And in libraries:

ManagedBlink1 -- a 100% .NET blink(1) library (thanks to Jean-Francois Talbot)

GoBlink -- a Go interface to blink(1) (thanks to Gary Boone)

Python examples -- using two different techniques, thanks to Aaron Blondeau & Stephen Youndt, more discussion here

Also check out Joe Walnes' nifty "blink(1) + Google Latitude = 'Where’s Daddy?'" post about spending 25-minutes to whip up a presence indicator for his kids.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Kenji, We sent you a message just now with the tracking number. USPS said it was delivered on 10 Dec.

Hey guys I still haven't received my device. I try to email you privately but there is no section on your page that allows me to do so, therefore I'm using the comment section. Can you please check when you will be able to send mine? I filled out my survey nearly 7 months ago.

Never mind. It just fired. I guess I'll stick with it for now and see how it does.
Hey, here's a pro-tip for you, ThingM. I'm 100% sure you're all Mac users, but when you get ready to do your next project, hire a developer to create a usable application for Windows or don't advertise it on your Kickstarter as "CROSS PLATFORM EVERYWHERE".

It's still not working. At this point, I've lost all confidence that you will deliver a working product for Windows users and would like to see about getting a refund.

Although, unhappy that I have to recreate all of my triggers.

    6. Andrew Nicholls

Deleting that dir worked, thanks :)

    7. Josef Ferguson on

Nope. It's still not doing a thing.

Thanks for the update, I'll try it tonight. On a side note, I accidentally sent my Blink(1) through the washing machine AND dryer...still works! Thanks for making such a quality product!

    9. Markus on

Thanks. Deleting the settings fixed it for me.

Removing that data works.. My recipes/settings that were setup are gone, but I only had two that were kinda for testing so.

To those who are having issues: if you could, find the "log.txt" file in the "logs" folder inside the Blink1Control folder and email it to me the last 20 lines of it to blink1 at

Also, for future issues like this, please open a GetSatisfaction issue so we can track it better.

If you've run previous version of Blink1Control, there might be some issues with the last version's setting files getting in the way. (and I don't now enough about Windows settings yet to deal with this case) If you're handy with the command-line, quit Blink1Control, go to the "AppData\Local\ThingM" directory in your user directory and delete everything there. Then try restarting Blink1Control.

Thanks! and sorry for the growing pains

This works great for me (Win 7 Pro SP1 64bit)

The new Windows version isn't working for me either (Win 7 64bit).

I can get it to even load up... Nada. (Win 7 SP1 64bit)

    15. Andrew Nicholls

Howdy, the new windows controller runs for about 5 seconds (task manager) and quits without displaying anything (windows 8). Original one was fine. Logfile just shows that it's pulled my original triggers from somewhere.. where are they stored? I'll remove them and retry. Event log shows this for each excecution:
      Event ID 1000 (Application error)
Exception code: 0xe0434352 (a quick google says this is an unhandled exception)
      Fault offset: 0x00014b32
