Note: The Wolfe works on Windows, too
Your laptop is an incredible device that can do almost anything.
You can browse the web, communicate, manage your data, and so much more -- but there’s something missing. Sometimes, our laptops just aren’t powerful enough.
Laptops sacrifice performance for portability. For more intensive tasks like gaming, VR, and high-speed rendering, your laptop is held back by it’s weak, mobile graphics processor. Because of this, you’re expected to use a bulky, expensive desktop computer for these tasks. If you can buy an external hard drive to easily expand your storage, why can’t you do the same for your laptop’s performance?
That’s why we created the Wolfe - the affordable, easy-to-use device that removes these barriers and gives you the power to do all the gaming, design, and more -- on the laptop you already own. You never have to buy a desktop again.
With the Wolfe Pro, your laptop is fully equipped to handle VR. For the first time, gamers, developers, and other professionals can use this technology without a desktop computer.
The Wolfe outperforms consoles and most desktops, so you can play all the latest AAA games. And for enthusiasts, the Wolfe Pro allows you to play at the highest settings, without compromising performance.
The Wolfe lets you create faster and more efficiently than ever. Enhance your CAD with super-smooth rendering and modeling, boost your performance in the Adobe Suite, or power any other GPU-accelerated application...
Boost tons of other applications
Any application that can benefit from GPU acceleration will receive a performance increase from the Wolfe. This includes CryptoCurrency mining, hardware accelerated programming, machine learning, AI, and simulation. Check out an in-depth list here.
At the most basic level, the Wolfe is a device that speeds up your laptop.
The Wolfe plugs into your computer to dramatically improve any application that requires graphical power.
The Wolfe is a desktop GPU that can plug into your laptop. A GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is a computer chip that contains hundreds (or even thousands) of microprocessors, together capable of trillions of operations per second. This makes it makes far better than a standard computer chip (CPU) at things like gaming and 3D rendering.
- The Wolfe contains an NVIDIA GTX 950 GPU - 768 cores operating at 1024MHz, for a peak compute power of 1.57 TeraFLOPS.
- The Wolfe Pro runs on an NVIDIA GTX 970 GPU - 1664 cores operating at 1050MHz, for a peak compute power of 3.49 TeraFLOPS.
What about NVIDIA's 10-series GPUs? As of right now, The Wolfe Pro includes an NVIDIA GTX 970. However, it's more than likely that Wolfe Pro level backers will be able to opt for the new GTX 1060 in our post-campaign survey for even better performance. See the FAQ for more information on this topic.
Desktop-level performance - On the laptop you already own
The Wolfe provides up to 5x the graphical power of your typical modern laptop - enough to completely support most of your gaming needs. And for professionals, enthusiasts, and VR users, the Wolfe Pro provides up to 10x the performance increase -- giving you more power than many desktops.

Faster GPU rendering:
Thunderbolt equipped - Supercharge your laptop, old or new
The Wolfe is compatible with Thunderbolt 1, 2, and 3, so you can use it on any Thunderbolt-enabled laptop. (NOTE: The Thunderbolt 2 Wolfe will ONLY be available to Kickstarter backers. Per the eGFX standard, Wolfepack, Inc. will only use TB 3 technology moving forward.) Be sure to check our compatibility list for more information.
Thunderbolt 2 users: While the Wolfe will dramatically increase your performance on your laptop’s display, you will get the best results using an external monitor or VR headset. This is due to the inherent bandwidth restrictions in Thunderbolt 2.
Thunderbolt 3 users: You do not have to worry about internal vs. external display. Be sure to check our FAQ for more information.
You can pick whether you want a Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 3 Wolfe in our post-campaign backer survey.
Multiple Wolves - More wolves, even more power
The number of wolves you can use is only limited by the number of Thunderbolt ports you have. With two ports and two wolves, you can see insane boosts in performance. However, the benefits of this feature are entirely dependent on the applications you use, so be sure to check for multi-GPU support (Industry multi-GPU support for gaming isn't quite there yet).
On the go - Untie yourself from your desk
The Wolfe’s small form factor and its mobile power supply allows you to take it wherever you go. In your hotel room, at Starbucks, at home, at work - bring your Wolfepower with you.
Easy to use - Ready out of the box
Our Wolfe Manager software makes everything really simple. You just plug the Wolfe in, click ‘install’, and you’re ready to go. Kickstarter backers will receive a download key for free with the Wolfe.
Software features - Plug and play
Aside from the one-click installer, the Wolfe Manager will enable internal display and GPU switching at launch. This means that you can choose which applications and games to run on the Wolfe, to manage your computers resources how you want.
Thunderbolt 3 users can expect updates such as Easy Eject, Hot Plugging, Elective Launch (choose a specific application to run with the Wolfe), and more. This is just the beginning for us, and as our community grows the software will continue to help more and more users get the most out of the Wolfe.
The Wolfepack's vision is to make desktop computer obsolete, and to level the playing field between platforms by making Macs performance powerhouses too. In doing so, we want to stop big companies from charging outrageous prices for minuscule upgrades by letting everyone take control of their computer’s performance.
We also hope to bring VR to everyone. The founder of Oculus and the creator of the Rift, Palmer Luckey, has famously proclaimed his desire to bring the Rift to Mac, saying:
Right now, the Wolfe Pro allows you to use the Rift or Vive on a Mac with Bootcamp or a Windows laptop. In the future, we want to bring Virtual Reality to macOS - and with your help we can make that happen. Even if you don’t want to purchase a Wolfe just yet, your support (even if it’s only 1 dollar or sharing our vision with your friends) will help bring VR to everyone.
From dorm room to market
The Wolfe began over a year ago in a Harvard dorm room when we realized how much we wanted, and needed, this to exist. Inspired by the online eGPU community, we built our first prototype in the summer of 2015. Our vision was to create an affordable, easy-to-use product that would change personal comp forever.
Focused on portability, simplicity, and sleek design, we began an extensive prototyping process that took us over a year to complete. After many iterations, we've finally arrived at a beautiful solution we are proud of.
*The Wolfe without the GPU. The DIY Kit is for hardware enthusiasts only. Our enclosure is intended for half-length GPUs but we welcome you to report your hardware/software experimentation with whichever GPU you choose. Also note that our 220W power supply is not rated for all GPUs on the market.

Risks and challenges
As a hardware and software product, the Wolfe has a number of risks, most of which are associated with the hardware side. We have dramatically reduced these risks by partnering with Dragon Innovation - with their help, we have assessed our manufacturability, production costs, and economies of scale, and we are confident we have a product we can deliver on. That being said, there are a few risks that could potentially delay delivery:
Manufacturing/Production - Unforeseen production delays are always a possibility. We have communicated with various different suppliers and manufacturers, opening multiple supply avenues to minimize this risk.
Order Volume - We have planned for a number of different volumes to minimize this risk. However, higher-than-expected volumes require changes in the manufacturing process, potentially causing delays.
Certification - Different parts of our product must be tested and certified by various agencies. We have been working hard to set up our pre-certification process so that we can proceed promptly once the campaign is finished.
Software - While our software is fully functional, we would like to implement a number of different features to improve the user experience. We are programmers by trade, so we are very confident in our ability to finalize this by delivery - this is a low risk.
We feel confident in our ability to deliver a high-quality product on time. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The Wolfe is a device that speeds up your laptop. More specifically, the Wolfe gives you a performance boost in gaming, rendering, 3D modeling, virtual reality, or any other graphically intensive task. From a more technical standpoint, the Wolfe is a GPU that plugs into your computer via Thunderbolt.
A GPU (or “Graphics Processing Unit”) is a computer chip that contains hundreds of microprocessors, together capable of trillions of operations per second. This makes it far better than a standard computer chip (CPU) at things like gaming and 3D rendering.
If you are a gamer, professional, or power-user, the Wolfe will dramatically improve your laptop experience. Gamers - have you ever experienced choppy frame rates? Or been totally incapable of using virtual reality or playing a certain game on your laptop? The Wolfe fixes that - giving you a smooth, enjoyable experience. Professionals - do you deal with slow render times, lag, or reduced interactivity when you are not using a workstation? The Wolfe fixes that too, by giving your laptop the power it needs to become your workstation.
Note: the Wolfe Pro is recommended for Virtual Reality.
No - the Wolfe will not speed up your internet, web browsing, document editing, etc. As a GPU, it can only boost applications that make use of hardware acceleration. Check out this comprehensive list of applications that can make use of the Wolfe:
Check out our Kickstarter! Early birds get the Wolfe for $399 - that's just about what it costs us to produce! We want to get the Wolfe in as many hands as possible.
This depends on your computer - more specifically on its GPU, and whether it uses Thunderbolt 2 or 3. The typical laptop user can expect performance increases up to 500% with the Wolfe, or up to 1000% with the Wolfe Pro. Older computers will see even more dramatic performance gains - up to 2000%. See our performance breakdown for more info.
Most Likely! The Wolfe works with any computer that has Thunderbolt. That means practically every Mac is compatible! This includes:
MacBook Air 11-inch, Mid 2011 – present
MacBook Air 13-inch, Mid 2011 – present
MacBook Pro Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012 – present
MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2012 – present
MacBook Pro 13-inch, Early 2011 – present
MacBook Pro 15-inch, Early 2011 – present
Mac mini, Mid 2011 – present
iMac, Mid 2011 – present
Mac Pro, Late 2013 - present
The Wolfe is also compatible with any Windows laptop that is Thunderbolt-enabled!
Note: the 12-inch MacBook (with USB-C) does not feature Thunderbolt, and therefore is not compatible with the Wolfe.
Please don't hesitate to email us if you have questions about compatibility.
Due to the size constraints inherent in portable computers, laptop GPUs are greatly underpowered. With the Wolfe you can stay portable, without sacrificing performance.
In simple terms - your computer sends all the hardest work to the Wolfe, and it deals with it much faster. On a technical level, Thunderbolt combines two types of data into one cable - DisplayPort (for your screen) and PCIe (for your Graphics Card). This allows us to send data from your laptop to the Wolfe, which then processes that data and outputs it as high-quality graphics to display on your screen.
Setup is incredibly easy - our Wolfepack software allows you to install the Wolfe in one click, on macOS or Windows. All you need to do is plug the Wolfe in and run the installer.
Just plug in the Wolfe, power on your laptop, and you are ready to go!
Yes! The Dual Wolfe setup is incredibly powerful. In fact, you can use as many Wolves as you have Thunderbolt ports - so on the Mac Pro you can add up to six! This is most useful for the biggest power-users: if you want to build a render farm, machine learning/compute workstation, cryptocurrency mining rig, or multi-monitor setup, a pack of Wolves will blow your regular computer away. We're continually improving our Wolfepack software to add more capabilities, including broader multi-Wolfe support. The Dual Wolfe setup is not recommended for gamers yet, but we are working hard to bring you multi-GPU gaming.
We are modders at heart - you're welcome to take apart the Wolfe to try different GPUs (and they very well could work). Please understand, however, that this will void any warranties. We also hope to have an unofficial forum for all Wolfe users - including modders/hackers that want to try this out.
“Internal Display” refers to your laptop screen. “External Display” refers to an external monitor or VR headset. With the Thunderbolt 3 Wolfe, you will not see any difference in performance between the two. With the Thunderbolt 2 Wolfe, you may see a smaller boost in performance on the internal display - but still a huge jump.
The Wolfe is made in the United States (though some components are sourced internationally).

At this point, there is no TB3 and TB2 Wolfe combination. Unfortunately the cost of creating a new, special PCB with both TB2 and TB3 would be very large. If it helps, you'll be able to decide on which version of Thunderbolt you'd prefer in a BackerKit survey after the campaign. We hope the extra time to decide makes things a little bit easier.
Also, while there aren't any Thunderbolt 2-3 or 3-2 adapters that would currently work with the Wolfe, we hope that adapter manufacturers will improve their technology in the next few months.
