Tyrone Wells, a noted and beloved contemporary singer/songwriter and Broken Eagle, LLC, an art studio specializing in practical (handmade 3D) art and stop motion animation have collaborated to create a children’s picture book that quite literally has no rival in the publishing world. Combining Tyrone’s powerful storytelling sensibilities and Broken Eagle’s hyper-detailed cinematic handcrafted art, “The Whatamagump” is both a joy to read and a visual treat for the eyes never before seen, except perhaps on the big screen.
The Whatamagump is the story of a lovable monster who overcomes his biggest fears with the help and courage of his best friend; an adorably scrappy little 7 year old named Julie with a big heart and a taste for adventure!
What makes The Whatamagump such unique and exciting book is that, unlike most picture books who's artwork is created with pen, paint or a computer, our team of artists will be creating every detail by hand, from scratch - quite literally bringing the characters and their world into our reality! The result is a picture viewing experience with a depth of field and realism that you won't find anywhere else.
The following are examples of a completed set and character prototypes, test photographed under different lighting scenarios with a 50mm lens. The book will likely include shots in 35mm, further extending the depth of field and three dimensional look.
What is the money for? Here is a quick breakdown:
- Kickstarter/Funding Fees: 10%
- Hardcover Book Printing (32pg full color gloss): 28%
- Labor, Materials and audio production: 60%
- remaining funds for rewards fullfillment
As you can imagine, this is tedious work that takes many skilled hands an incredibly long time to produce, and that is why the bulk of the funds are allocated for labor and materials.
To produce the artwork necessary to accommodate Tyrone's story and fill a 32 page book, it will require as many as 5 highly skilled sculptors and artisans with multiple specialties working full time (or more) for 3 months. This is where Broken Eagle comes in.
Because every detail is created by hand and the character's poses and expressions will change from page to page, this book will require expertise in the following areas:
- Puppet Fabrication
- Set Fabrication
- Prop/Model Fabrication
- Painting (dry brush and air brush)
- Molding and Casting
Here are some 'Behind the Scenes' photos taken while Broken Eagle created the set and characters shown above.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge is the size and scope of the project. This production has far more components then your average book, so there are many facets that could cause slight production or printing delays. While we have made every effort to account for any challenges that may arise, we are aware that in doing something no one has done before, we may likely be surprised with unexpected issues that slightly delay the final product. In the unlikely event that such a circumstance occurs we will be transparent with our supporters.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
