About

Glenwood Springs " The Defiant Years "

The Valley Insider has partnered with the Glenwood Chamber and the Frontier Museum. We will utilize the resources of the museum to create a Ken Burns style Documentary with the addition of docu-drama. The project will recreate scenes from the past including Doug Mishler a Chautauqua actor who will portray a young and funny Teddy Roosevelt at the Hotel Colorado. A local Doc Holiday will bring some excitement to the film. Interviews with notable long time locals will fill the project with first hand accounts of events and stories. Ron Milhorn from KMTS will be narrating the project.

Hughes’ Wholesale Liquor
Hughes’ Wholesale Liquor

Ed Hughes started in business by opening the Glenwood Bottling Works, where he bottled all types of aerated drinks, such as ginger ale, cider, sarsaparilla and beer and moved on to the distribution of liquor as he became more successful. The Budweiser beer wagon is seen in this photo, circa 1895.

Funds raised will go into the creation of a film project of the history of Glenwood Springs Colorado. Crew, actors, composers and post production talent will be hired locally to produce the docu-drama. The community will be involved with the chance to be in one of the many scenes to be filmed in town as an extra.

Glenwood Springs Fire Department 1922
Glenwood Springs Fire Department 1922

On a cold winter day in 1922, the hearty members of the Glenwood Springs Fire Department posed for a photo with their fire truck on the grounds of the Hot Springs Pool. The photograph was included in the January 1923 edition of “Fire and Water Engineering” magazine to promote the local fire department and Glenwood Springs.

The project will focus on Glenwood from 1860 to 1926. We will highlight the well known stories but also search out the obscure, lessor known stories and characters of Glenwood's Defiant Years.

Hot Springs Pool and Hotel Colorado
Hot Springs Pool and Hotel Colorado

Hot Springs pool and Hotel Colorado developer, Walter Devereux, knew the wealthy, health-seeking traveler would pay good money to journey to and vacation in Glenwood Springs. Many of these visitors, who were suffering from a diagnosis of nervous exhaustion, would stay for two or three months during the summer, relaxing and taking in the mineral waters.

Risks and challenges

One of our risk is getting the story and time line correct. To minimize our risk we have teamed up with the Frontier Museum and numerous local historians who will be both on camera and behind the scenes helping us to get it right. We are going to great pains to be purists.
We have allowed our selves 3 months to film and 2 months for post production and should have a finished film by December 2015.
