About this project
My passion for coffee began in 1994 when visiting a San Francisco café. I heard what sounded like a rock tumbler and discovered it was a coffee roaster. Then I realized that coffee didn't have to be flat and bitter, as coffee roasting was a true art form.
Blind from birth, my visual impairment kept me from working as an apprentice in the coffee business. So I attended the San Francisco Coffee Training Institute and began my journey into the land of gourmet coffee roasting.
I only buy the finest quality beans the world has to offer. Although the selections vary seasonally, I can usually get the beans my customers want.
House favorites include Zambia, Malawi, Indonesian Sumatra, and 100% pure Kona Fancy. Whenever possible, I prefer to buy organic, shade-tree grown, fair-trade beans. Although most of my customers enjoy the caffeine zing, decaffeinated blind-roasted coffees also are available.
The unique quality of my coffee is in the freshness of the beans and the way they're roasted. I believe that freshly-roasted coffee needs to reach the consumer as quickly as possible. That's why I take the time necessary to pay close attention to the smells and sounds. My goal is to roast each batch to perfection, presenting you with consistent taste and degrees of roast. All Unseen Bean orders are custom orders.
I offer you the opportunity to taste your favorite beans freshly roasted so you can have your morning fix exactly the way you want. All of my coffee roasting is logged so that accurate reproduction can be achieved from order to order.
As you can see, our goal is to raise $10,000 in order to get our second location up and running. We have expanded from Boulder, Colorado to Lafayette, Colorado and are excited to add new features to The Unseen Bean. The new location will not only be a coffee shop, but will double as a roasterie in our attempt to satisfy our customers dependability for our coffee.
What are we going to do with the money?
Our first priority is to get signage in and outside of the new location. Considering we are located inside a shopping center, our shop is currently hard to find. We have spoken to the sign company and were given a $4500 estimate. This will include two back-lit signs with our logo to go on the front and the back of the building and also a sign to go above the front door inside the atrium.
Second, is funding the development of an ice cream cooler to put in the new location. We plan on having a cooler big enough to support four 5-gallon tubs of ice cream you would find at the traditional ice cream shop. We are also excited to be working with Glacier Ice Cream, a local shop, to create a coffee flavored ice cream using our own Beans! With the cooler and creation of our own flavor of ice cream, we estimate the cost to be roughly around $3000.
Third, our espresso machines are a little out-dated and are in need of some desperate attention. We want to be a fully functional coffee shop that not only serves drip coffee, but specialty drinks like mochas, espresso, milkshakes etc. In order for this to happen, we need to update our machinery and repair the appropriate parts. We estimate the cost to be approximately $500.
Fourth, in order to have a successful business in the food and drink industry, you need the appropriate permits. Our second location was remodeled from the ground up to efficiently satisfy our needs. In doing so, we need health permits to officially open and serve our customers. These permits and inspections are estimated at around $500.
Finally, the remainder of the funds will go to satisfying you, the backer! We are very thankful and appreciative of your efforts to help out The Unseen Bean. Whether it's donating $1, $50 or even $2000, we would love to express our gratitude in any and every way possible.
Risks and challenges
A risk we can potentially run into is not marketing the ice cream aspect of The Unseen Bean the right way. We will need to show our current and future customers that we have gourmet ice cream available in addition to great coffee. This risk will be taken into account by taking the necessary actions in advertising to promote our new feature. For example, we will be consistently updating our Facebook page and website with promotions and information about the new location. In addition, we will be doing sampling through various events and trying to get our name out there.
Another potential risk is moving enough coffee to stay profitable. This will include distributing our beans through online, in-person and over the phone sales. To make sure we are getting enough business, we will continue meeting with various businesses to promote our coffee. This will include everything from getting our coffee into waiting rooms of offices to selling in stores. Already, we are available in all Whole Foods markets by request. In addition, we will continue advertising through numerous mediums.
Considering we are located in a shopping mall that is under new management and is being completely flipped, the amount of foot traffic to come is still uncertain. There are all kinds of new businesses opening within the shopping mall to attract many different customers to our location. We are confident that as soon as the construction is done and the businesses are up and running, we will be able to profit greatly, considering our central location within the atrium.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
