A GROUNDBREAKING NEW TV SERIES ABOUT AN AGING BAD BOY ROAMING THE HOLLYWOOD JUNGLE. A BIZARRE CROSS BETWEEN LOUIE AND ENTOURAGE

THE TROUBLE with BILLY IS A GROUNDBREAKING
NEW TV SERIES ABOUT AN AGING BAD BOY (AND
HIS PIT PULL) ROAMING THE HOLLYWOOD JUNGLE.
A BIZARRE CROSS BETWEEN LOUIE AND ENTORURAGE.

The Trouble with Billy (TTwB) is a shrewdly scripted TV comedy spiced up with an (un)healthy dose of raw reality. Loosely based on the loosely lived life of fallen 90s star Billy Mack, it follows Billy’s adventurous trials and tribulations as he tries to revive his movie career and save his soul in the shark-infested waters of modern-day Hollywood. Sadly deprived of a hip “entourage” to coddle his shrinking ego, Billy lives in Monte Carlo — a rundown 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo — with his only companion, a trusty pit bull, Boo. Fueled by a cutting-edge blend of reality and fantasy, The Trouble with Billy is…the Anti-Entourage

The secret weapon of our show is that it will feature a unique array of high-profile stars from Billy’s past (he’s worked with the likes of Jim Carrey, Jodie Foster and Sigourney Weaver, to name a few) intermingled with wild real-life characters from his grungy present. The exciting challenge will be to infuse all of Billy’s surreal, satirical, sometimes shocking escapades with sheer realism — as if the Theater of the Absurd morphed into a slice-of-life documentary. Ideally, The Trouble with Billy will be so believable that our audience will not know the difference between what’s real or unreal. ( Production won't be able to lock down actors for the cameos, i.e. Joe Manganiello, Norman Reedus, etc. until we have the finances in place with a firm start date and a locked schedule.)

Thus far, with a long-term outlook in mind, I have created a potent TTwB startup arsenal: a 24-page pilot script; four additional scripts; the entire first-season “bible” (plot, story & character arcs); and a guerrilla-style 7-minute "teaser".

Although my self-shot, zero-budget “teaser” reel was merely cooked up to offer a homemade taste of TTwB’s raw rebel spirit (causing a few worried Facebook friends to believe I was actually living in my car), this sampling was enough to attract the interest of the highly reputable distribution company, Industrial Entertainment

Further compelled by my overall vision and concept for TTwB, Industrial Entertainment has already committed to worldwide distribution in all media, thus guaranteeing our capacity to be broadcast on cable TV, streamed on Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and sold to foreign territories as a stand-alone TV special.

(THE VIDEO ABOVE, the TTwB teaser video suffices as a teaser but we need to create something that looks good enough to be aired on TV. I provide this teaser only as an example of the tone or flavor of the show, NOT as an example of what the final product will look like. It takes money to shoot something up to broadcast standards)

Now, in order to shoot the super-polished, broadcast-quality 24-minute pilot episode, I only need to raise 15,000 dollars. How, you may wonder, will I be able to achieve this feat on such a minimal budget? Well, as fate (and luck) would have it, the “arsenal” I just cited has ignited an amazing amount of online buzz among my various industry contacts. Hence, I have managed to enlist a blue-chip cast, a first-rate TV crew (DP, art director, editor, etc.) and a full-scale production house (topflight camera, sound & lighting packages, editing bays, sound studios, etc.) to lend us their talents and services for a fraction of their standard fees — all because they share my passion and belief in the project!

Of course, our ultimate goal is for The Trouble with Billy to grow and flourish as a groundbreaking series on a daring premium network such as FX, Comedy Central, or Showtime. For now, though, we must take the first step of this journey together…

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The typical risks and challenges involved in a TV project, such as the actual physical production and distribution will be minimized by using a team of experienced professionals that I have cultivated relationships with over the last 20 years in the entertainment business. An example of a typical challenge for any independant production is obtaining a distribution deal. Most independents(film & TV) struggle to get a reputable distribution deal for their finished project. I have overcome that challenge by securing a distribution deal upfront prior to going into production! We will have DVDs at Redbox, Walmart, etc as well as streaming on Netflix, iTunes, and Amazon as a stand alone 30 minute special. And of course our primary goal is to get an episode order from a cable network. I was recently involved with a Kickstarter campaign for a TV series, DTLA, as an actor, which was funded right here on Kickstarter and is now airing NINE EPISODES on LOGO in the US and OUT TV in Canada!

The greatest challenge will be delivering a high end broadcast quality TV pilot for 15,000 dollars. But again, because of our team's industry relationships we will have the best camera, sound and lighting equipment for a fraction of the cost. We will have a great crew and actors at a fraction of the cost because they believe in the project. But we want to pay actors and crew a fair wage. We will need to pay for two fairly expensive locations. We will need permits, insurance and we must work within all unions(including SAG) requirements-we will be bonded. We do have a budget that has been worked on and approved by an experienced line producer and 1st AD at 15,000 dollars.

Another challenge could be the fact that I as an actor will need to carry the project. I not only believe in myself as an actor and have proven myself: http://youtu.be/U6LhK6cpwU8 but I have designed this show to showcase the guest stars, whether they be great actors, well known actors or real people who are unique and zany characters from my life. Our plan is to produce an ensemble piece and give everyone a chance to shine. I will be the "host" of the "party" so to speak. My job will be to keep the ongoing party fun and entertaining. I have a lot of experience at that!

And finally there is the goal and challenge of obtaining a TV series order or sale to a cable network like FX or COMEDY CENTRAL. This is always a crap shoot and I have been involved with pilots in the past that did not get picked up. A network pilot could cost up to a million dollars to produce and if that pilot doesn't get a thumbs up from the network, all that money and work gets shelved to never be seen. With the advent of technology, such as affordable broadcast quality cameras, sound and edit software, we can make our own media for much less money and greatly reduce the risk. There are many examples of low cost TV pilots that hit big; to name a few, WORKAHOLICS, IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA and Lisa Kudrow's WEB THERAPY( from web series to Showtime).

The difference today is that there are so many different media platforms and outlets, from the internet to mobile phones, cable TV, DVD, Blu Ray, etc., that we can utilize in getting our project out into the public eye and because of social media we have more control and potential to find and build an audience. Lisa Kudrow’s Showtime series started out as a web series.

The Trouble with Billy is designed to be broken up(edited) into TV episodes, internet webisodes, mobile mini-episodes,DVD/Netlix/Amazon/iTunes stand alone comedy special with great cameos from well known actors.

Another failsafe in place to minimize risk is the team I've assembled to execute our project. Mike Tadross, a long time friend; he grew on a movie set working for his father. And for the last ten years Mike has sold and produced his own TV shows and movies.

My friend and mentor, Joe Manganiello: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0542133/ . I say mentor even though I'm much older than him because if there is a "trouble" about Billy, Joe is the antithesis in that if I were going to develop a project based on him I would call it the perfection of Joe. He does everything right, he's talented but more importantly he hasn't forgotten about his friends

. And finally, one of my co writers, Adam Coleman Howard, who has written numerous scripts, two of these scripts were made into movies that he directed, DEAD GIRL with Val Kilmer and DARK HARBOR with Norman Reedus, Polly Walker and Alan Rickman.

I want to include some examples of other self-shot/self-produced TV concepts done for a small budget that went on to become very successful TV shows. Here's an example from the creators of IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA. Two scenes from their ORIGINAL pilot: http://youtu.be/BmiL2I9HX_8 and http://youtu.be/q-MKZ847gIQ
