The Tower is a gritty, terrifying survival horror game that is grounded in historical realism and fact. You are Elliot; a man imprisoned in England, Surrey during the 11th century. His crime is one of alleged treason, fated to months of torture inside England's most feared hold...The Tower.
Until one day, an opportunity reveals itself to Elliot, allowing him to escape his shackles and potentially his captor's grasp...if he can only find his way out of the dark and avoid execution. By default, the game makes use of a punishing permadeath feature that will erase all progress upon the player's death. You'll have to rely upon stealth, cunning and your senses to slip past guards and reach the next 'respite' area, where you can save your game and relax a little.
We've already been Greenlit on Steam, but before we launch into Early Access and beyond, given the chance we'd like to be able to get The Tower into a stable, Beta build. There's plenty of work to be done, but we're so happy with how the game is currently progressing.
The Tower is all about immersion. This is why we're working with Oculus and their latest hardware to deliver a truly terrifying and overwhelming VR experience. First and foremost, the game is being built from the ground up for VR headsets, but is still fully playable without.
Right now, one of our key development factors, is responsive and realistic AI guards. We want them to hunt, chase and work together to find the player and instil a constant feeling of dread whenever you hear one walking his patrol route. Your only form of defence is evasion.
The last nine months of development have been greatly bolstered by gamers, VR press and fellow developers who have provided valuable feedback. We've improved artwork, streamlined our coding process and learnt a tonne about binaural audio. There's still so much work to do, but that's where we're hoping you can help us!
Kickstarter allows us to maintain a steady and focused workflow, by acquiring ideas and feedback from you on a daily basis. We can remain in contact with our backers and ensure every decision is thought through before it becomes cemented in the game we'll be developing together.
The very instant we're funded, we'll be launching our Steam event, meaning you'll be able to access the Early Access version immediately and be engaged in the development process from the start. Initially, The Tower will be available on PC, MAC and Linux and should we reach our funding target and roll into Stretch Goal territory, we plan to publish to Xbox One and Playstation 4 too!
We're completely dedicated to delivering the best game we can; we have the time and skills, but we just need that little extra financial boost to truly push us up the hill for next year's release. The initial goal of £50k will allow us to cover the costs of living for the entire team, purchase additional hardware, any software/publishing licences and project assets that will enable us to finish the game faster and assist us in making The Tower the best it can be.
Any additional funding that should push us over the initial goal, will go into marketing costs (such as global festival submissions, news wires, e.t.c) and expediting development.
- A truly atmospheric and pulse-pounding VR title. It's no fun if you're not looking over your shoulder, holding your breath at every sound and generally having a stressful time! We aim to deliver the perfect blend of horror and player reward.
- Visual richness. Using the latest version of Unity 5, we're able to push the engine to its very limits. Stone looks cold, wet and imposing...that nearby torch looks inviting but will expose you to any horrors nearby...experience the non-VR version in full 4K fidelity.
- Risk and reward. Taking a page out of Dark Souls' book, we're aiming to reward patience and commitment whilst you traverse the shadows of The Tower. The threat of permadeath will push you to breaking point, punishing failure with brutal consquences...all while remaining fair and fun. Making it to that next save point is all that matters...
- Adaptive AI. Thanks to the team at Rival Theory, we're aiming to deliver realistic and unpredictable guards that will drive the horrors of being hunted by sadistic killers to new heights.
- A premier VR experience. The Oculus Rift has yet to enjoy a go-to 'killer app' for its hardware. We aim to go for the juglar and be the first...with your help of course!
- An emotional story, grounded in reality. The Tower is based upon events that took place during the 11th century. Who was this prisoner? Why was he incarcerated? What was his eventual fate?
Dante is psychotically passionate about game development. Always pushing for consistency and aiming for that 'little extra polish', he will grab development by the balls and make it jump through all types of spiky, flaming hoops.
Ben is responsible for testing every element of gameplay during development. He also dabbles in additional level development and programming.
Zakk steps in from time to time to record the ocassional score, but is primarily responsible for creating all of our sound effects and directing our voice actors.

By pledging £4,500 or more, you'll receive everything from the previous tiers, PLUS, we'll arrange for you to travel to London and experience the horrors of a medieval dungeon first-hand, courtesy of The London Dungeon Experience! We'll have a laugh, get scared a bit and then you'll spend time with us at the studio, where we'll give you a tour and a very unique look into The Tower's development (you must be 16 or over to qualify for this reward).

Risks and challenges
At the end of the day, product quality and player satisfaction are absolutely KEY. In order to deliver both, we must iterate frequently to ensure the best feedback can be given, with plenty of time to implement it.
Having a substantial playtesting phase, with a large number of users to become involved with it, will be an element of development that will be engaged as soon as we're funded. We know exactly how to budget ahead, and what will be required in order to make The Tower financially constructive during this stage of production.
