Who are we?
What we really want you to know is that we believe in the power of music and the purpose of song. We know that it has the ability to lift hearts and bring people together. A good song invites us to see through different eyes, think new thoughts and feel on deeper levels. With so much chaos, confusion and despair in our world - one thing we are certain of is that we ALL could use more heart-full music in our lives. It actually feels urgent for us to share these harmonies that we are weaving and these songs that we are writing. Since forming The Sweet Goodbyes in 2015, we have known that this collaboration was greater than the sum of our parts. It has taken us a couple years to get our bearings - to wean ourselves enough from working, parenting, and overall adulting to find time to record these songs...BUT we know it was worth the wait! The music we are creating in the studio right now has come at its own perfect time and we are so excited to share it with the world!
What are we doing?
We are making our first full-length album! We have already begun recording at Empty Sea Studios in Seattle, WA and are crowdfunding to raise money to finish recording, mixing, mastering and manufacturing the album. If all goes as planned and we meet our minimum Kickstarter goal, we will be releasing our album this July 2017!
Here is a taste of our music - this song, Preachers Slough is just one of the songs that will be on our album:
What are we asking for?
THE MINIMUM GOAL: $7000 – MAKING THE ALBUM
We are so fortunate to have had several early donors who helped fund a portion of the initial recording costs of our album. This was a huge help to get our project off the ground while we crowd fund for our remaining costs of recording, mixing, mastering and CD production. The bare minimum we’ll need to raise in order to finish what we started to get our music out into the world (and a CD into your hands) is approximately $7,000. We are hopeful that with your help and the magic of social media - we will be able to meet this goal in just 30 days! Kickstarter is all or nothing, so if after 30 days we fall short of this goal, your cards won’t be charged and we won’t get any of the funding. We don't have the means to max out any credit cards for this project so WE NEED YOU. Let’s make this happen! Please help us share our music and our campaign FAR and WIDE!
We are thrilled to be recording this album with the talented Michael Connolly at Empty Sea Studios in Seattle, WA. Not only is Michael an incredible audio engineer - he also is an amazing musician and producer. We feel so fortunate to be working with someone whom we trust to help us create a professional studio recording while staying true to The Sweet Goodbyes sound and soul.
It takes a lot of thought and anticipation to figure out how much money we need to finish this project. Here is a breakdown of our anticipated costs:
Studio Recording Time: $80 per hour or $500 per day.
We raised $2000 prior to this Kickstart which is going directly to cover the cost of 4 days in the studio. THANK YOU DONORS!!! However, we anticipate needing 2-3 more days in the studio to finish recording our songs.
To finish up recording: 3 days in the studio @ $500/day = $1500
Mixing: $80 per hour
Once all the tracks to our songs are recorded - guitars, vocals, solo instrumentation, etc….Michael Connolly will be mixing down the songs to make sure they sound their best. This process can take nearly as long as recording each song. We anticipate needing close to 3 hours of mixing time per song to finish up this part of the process.
2.75 hours x 13 songs = 35.75 hours mixing time to get final mixes of our songs.
MIxing cost: 35.75 hours x $80/hr = $2860
Once all the songs are mixed - we will need to make sure that the final audio data is up to par - volume levels and overall sound is sweet. Mastering costs are typically a flat rate for the album and $500 is the average cost.
Album Art/Graphic Design Costs: $500
Not only is this album going to sound good - the physical CD is going to be a beautiful work of ART too! We are so excited to be working with local Bellingham artist Karen Blanquart to put together the artwork for our album. This collaboration feels truly serendipitous. As we were brainstorming (and feeling rather anxious about) the album feel/look and cover image - we discovered a painting that Karen had created and immediately knew that it had to be ours! Lucky for us, Karen was just as interested in a collaboration and we worked out an artistic licensing agreement so that we could use the image for our project. Here is the painting that will inspire our album artwork:
Karen will also be working with us to finalize the layout and graphics for the CD. In addition - she has given us the rights to 4 of her original pieces to offer 4, 5x5 postcards to backers at certain pledge amounts. The world could use a heavier dose of heart-full ART and we couldn’t be happier to be collaborating with an artist who offers just that!
CD Manufacturing: $1500 (-$1000) = $500
We are incredibly blessed to already have a donor lined up to pay for $1000 of the manufacturing costs!!! We will be ordering 1000 CDs plus 100 download cards to have available at our shows and on our website. This includes the CDs we will be mailing out to all our donors too!
Kickstarter/Credit Card Fees: ~ 10% of $7000 = $700
Kickstarter takes 5% of what we raise plus credit card fees which can vary. Kickstarter advises campaigns to budget up to %10 to cover the cost of these fees.
So….if we do the math:
- $1500 (recording) +
- $2860 (mixing) +
- $500 (mastering) +
- $500 (graphics/artwork) +
- $1500 (manufacturing) +
- $700 (fees)
= Total anticipated cost: $7560
Minus $1000 donor pledge for CD Manufacturing
+ a little wiggle room to help offset shipping costs =
MINIMUM GOAL: $7000
If we reach our minimum goal, we will be able to pay for RECORDING, PRODUCTION, MIXING, MUSICIANS, MASTERING, ARTWORK, and DUPLICATION, as well as KICKSTARTER and CREDIT CARD FEES (which are about 10% of gross pledges). This IS AMAZING!
This minimum goal does NOT, however, help us with the costs associated with any kind of PUBLICITY, RADIO PROMOTION, MERCHANDISE, or TOURING. So, to give this project a greater chance to be seen and heard, we’ve established a couple STRETCH GOALS.
STRETCH GOAL #1: $8,500 – PUBLICITY, RADIO PROMOTION
These days it takes a little more than writing a good song, singing beautiful harmonies or being charming on stage to be heard. In order to really spread the music far and wide, you need to have a good PR campaign or risk having the album just sit in boxes in your basement. If we raise $8,500 or more in 30 days, we will be able to pay for a modest PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN, including PRESS, RADIO, and INTERNET PROMOTION. This will give the album a much better chance of getting reviews and airplay and being heard by a wider audience.
STRETCH GOAL #2 - $10,000 – REGIONAL TOURING + MERCHANDISE (+ BONUS REWARD for ALL BACKERS)
The Sweet Goodbyes would love to take this album on the road for some short regional tours in 2017. We have our instruments, our songs, interested venues and a vehicle but what we don't necessarily have is a whole lot of time and money or MERCHANDISE. Amber and Lisa are both self-employed (music teacher + mental health therapist) and also have families to support so it is important for us to do this thing we love but also not have it become too much of a burden on our families. Being gone for shows can be challenging enough as we juggle work and family schedules (not to mention cancelling a week's worth of music lessons or counseling appointments can put a serious dent in the monthly paycheck)..so, we are establishing STRETCH GOAL #2 at $10,000 to help get us ON THE ROAD and to help pay for some MERCHANDISE to have available at our shows. Who wouldn't love a SWEET GOODBYES bumper sticker, poster or T-shirt?!?!?
If we reach STRETCH GOAL #2 not only will you have a better chance of catching us play a live show near you and pick up some sweet merchandise, but ALL Kickstart Backers will receive an EXCLUSIVE REWARD of a BONUS song recorded in studio (but that we didn't have room for on the CD)!!!!
We are so grateful that we get to share this gift of music with the masses and ever so thankful that we have your support. We couldn't do this without you! Please don't hesitate to contact us directly with any questions or requests (for instance - if you would like to invent your own incentive at a specific donor level...(ie: guitar lessons, a poem, or have us call your grandma on valentine's day) - we are open to your suggestions! Contact us through Kickstarter or send us a line at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Much love, Amber & Lisa
PS - Please SHARE this campaign with your friends and family - every little bit helps!
Risks and challenges
It is always risky to step into the unknown. To put faith in others. To make promises. To say yes to something new. What we can tell you is that we have been practicing and working hard - clearing our schedules - lining up donors and putting pieces into place so that we can make this project happen! While we cannot predict how our album will be received overall, we are confident that these funds, at the very least, will allow our music to be shared with world - with a much farther reach than we would have otherwise had.
In many ways, making an album is like having a baby...and this task, as many of you know - is full of challenges. There are big feelings to navigate - important choices to make. There is great responsibility - not just for the final product, but for the process all along the way. There are sleepless nights, derailed plans, unexpected illnesses, mundane tasks to complete, messes to clean up. But none of these foreseen challenges can dampen the drive we have to make this project happen. The love that we have for this album is already so strong and it has yet to be born! We feel more than ready to do that delicate dance of holding, nurturing, trusting and letting go as we move forward with this project. Also, it takes a village - and we are truly grateful for the village helping us to raise these songs up right!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
