An Unofficial and Unlicensed Book for Passionate Collectors!
Welcome to our Campaign!
The Switch Collector is a comprehensive "Switchopedia" Collector book series that will cover all the physical releases for the Nintendo Switch along with the must play digital-only releases we would like to see come out physically.
This initial volume, titled "Volume One" is the first of its kind about the system and covers the first year of the Nintendo Switch from the launch all the way to its first year anniversary. From Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey to indie favorites like Retro City Rampage and Azure Striker Gunvolt, there is a ton of ground to cover in the first year alone!
Each physically-released game will have at least a full page written on it, with a combination of a review along with personal experiences for each game. Various games have gotten more coverage due to their impact and some collector aspects will also be featured. All of the games will be accompanied by screenshots and region-appropriate box art. Aside from the release information, there is also a comprehensive listing of all of the modes you can play with your system. Finally, a Hagen's Alley staple, there are collector boxes for you to track if you own, have played, completed and your personal rating for each game; allowing you to completely personalize this book to your liking.
Selected digital releases will also be featured, with those page spreads having a more streamlined approach. There will also be promotional art so you can easily identify the game as the Developer and Publisher intended. We hope all of these games some day see a physical release and some already have been announced for a release in the future!
About the Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch has turned out to be a very special console that has offered both modern gamers and retro enthusiasts a unique experience unlike anything that has come prior. Never before has there been a console that so seamlessly transitions from TV play to a handheld with such quality. Being able to take your games with you on the go along with Nintendo's focus on couch coop, to allow everyone in the family to play together, allows each new game to have multiple ways for everyone to enjoy.
The collector aspects of the Switch combine modern with a flair of retro, as not only is this system the first home console since the Nintendo 64 to offer cartridges, but we also have the modern aspects of beautiful collector's editions that really add personality to one's game room or collection. Also, while not becoming part of the Switch's library until its second year, multiple limited companies were on the horizon and would soon also become a staple of collecting on the Nintendo Switch.
There has also been a revitalization of many game franchises that has made this generation of Nintendo consoles a very nostalgic experience for many people. Throughout this book you will see lots of nostalgia from page to page as we are gearing to make this the ultimate companion piece to anyone's Nintendo Switch experience.
Details About the Book
The Switch Collector: Volume One is a perfect 8.5" x 11" size that matches every other hardcover release by Hagen's Alley and is an industry standard, using high quality binding and glossy page stock to create a stunning book. This ensures that each and every full color page will be of the highest quality. Each book comes with a blue bookmark ribbon and, if the stretch goal is met, a second red ribbon which matches the original release joy-con colors. The hardcover book also mimics a Nintendo Switch box release with a red spine and white text so it can be displayed with your collection flawlessly!
The Switch Collector: Volume One will be over 300 pages long, and depending on contributor sections, developer interviews, backer digital-only game recommendations and stretch goals it could be much, much larger. As we hit book-related stretch goals we will be adding them to all copies of the book at no cost to the backers.
The Switch Collector: Volume One is the brain-child of Jeffrey Wittenhagen who has released multiple gaming books over the years. He does the majority of the writing, layouts, editing and art direction himself, with editors and artists helping out to ensure everything is of the highest quality. Jonathan Polan will be helping with all collector aspects to ensure accuracy as well as having his own section dedicated to the most obsessive collectors. The cover art was drawn and painted by the extremely talented Rusty Shackles who has done multiple video game pieces over the years. Finally, Erica Brus has done an amazing job creating the logo and icon for the book, which accentuates the collector mentality!

Content within the Book
The main bulk of the content will focus on all of the physical releases that came out during the first year of the Nintendo Switch. These articles will be 1-6 pages depending on the impact that game had. Not only will US releases be covered, but also other regions that have games that can be enjoyable by players everywhere. A brief history of the Nintendo Switch console itself will kick everything off in the book along with some highly collectible hardware pieces and highlights of the available accessories at the time.
There is a section for what we call "Fauxicals". These are those releases that didn't actually include a cartridge with the game, such as the Sonic Mania collector's edition. These can be collected and enjoyed but require a download to get the game.
On top of collector sections we are covering digital-only games that we would like to see get a physical release. Before the publishing of this book, if a limited company announces a physical version we will note it, but will still include them for historical purposes. Backers will also have an opportunity to offer suggestions of digital-only games from the first year that they would like to see included in the book.
Jonathan Polan from JP's Switchmania will have a section dedicated to highlighting the weird and wild world of collecting for the Switch. If something doesn't fit in the main section for a game due to space considerations, JP will cover it in this section. From cover variants to obscure region items, this will be an amazing section to check out.
Contributor Switch Stories will be the final portion of the book, which can be anything from your favorite game from the first year, how you like the system or even just stories about the Nintendo Switch. As long as it fits the theme of the book nothing is off limits! Everything is pending approval of the author and will be edited/modified to fit the tone of the book and to avoid redundancies.

The minimum of $10,000 is what will get a small print run off the ground for a 300 page book. Most of the funding goes to physical book printing, item production costs and of course the shipping. The remainder goes to ensure that everyone from the cover artist to the custom wooden cover creators and custom arcade makers are paid for their work. As stretch goals are met, the increased budget will allow for more advanced things such as printing imagery on the end-sheets and a slipcase for each book.
Typically things tend to take 4-6 months for production of any book due to multiple variables, such as waiting on backer reviews and quality control at the printer. Here is the estimation of time:
- Sep - Oct: Kickstarter Campaign
- Oct - Nov: Design/Writing/Backer Add-Ons
- Dec - Feb: Production and Printing
- Mar: Shipping
We use a fulfillment house for maximum speed and consistency with our releases. At the printing plant, all books will be shrink-wrapped so they are sealed before they are shipped in bulk. At the warehouse, all books will be wrapped in bubble wrap before going in the shipping box, which should minimize any issues. I will be personally shipping all combination tiers myself and those will be going out once I have all of the items. We have subsidized our shipping costs for this campaign to offer the cheapest shipping worldwide. This won’t be offered after the campaign has completed so be sure to support!
Some of the Awesome People Involved with this Project!
- There are tons more that have supported this project like the Nintendo Switch Physical Collector's Facebook Group, Switch Player Magazine, the #SwitchCorps Community, the NS Collectors Reddit Group and more... We can't thank all of you enough!
Why Hagen's Alley?
Hagen's Alley has a proven track record of getting books out to backers. Constantly improving and evolving, you can ensure that maximum effort will go in to each release so that each book is of the highest quality.
Our previous books have consistently gotten high praise and even been recognized for awards. I will strive to meet all expectations for this book so it is our best release to date.
I hope you will support this project and thank you for checking this campaign out!

Risks and challenges
The timelines are always a thing that are tough to meet, especially with backer submitted content. As you can see from the spreads there is a lot of writing going into this book, so that means more editing as well. Once the writing is completed it will be submitted to the editor and sent off to the printer.
There is a chance that an error could happen at the printing plant and if that happens things will be sent back for corrections. This may take some time, which is why the shipping date is far off. We anticipate things taking much less time as we want this to be an ongoing series as the Nintendo Switch library continues to grow each and every day!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
