Hidden Gaming Gems: Generation by Generation is a 400+ page full color book that showcases video games from a multitude of consoles, covering every gaming generation, starting with Atari and going all the way up to the current generation with Playstation 4, Xbox One and even the Nintendo Switch! There is also a section for new retro games created for older systems, like the NES, Commodore 64, Sega Genesis and even the Dreamcast / Neo Geo!
Being a gamer all my life, I have consistently seen games that I would deem "Hidden Gems" in essence. This doesn't necessarily mean they are rare or unknown, more so under-appreciated. My hope is that not only are there a bunch of amazing games you've not played within this book but also some games in here that you do remember and it strikes a nostalgic cord.
The book will be split into Chapters, starting with the 1st console generation and going all the way up to the newest generation of games. That means there will be Chapters on lots of games such as the 8th generation (with the Xbox One, 3DS and Wii U) as well as the 8.5/9th generation (with the Switch/PSVR), and the aforementioned Homebrew/Indie Section. I will also open up other Chapters as stretch goals, which will be really fun to do!
The game reviews will be 4-8 pages each and not only cover the games, but also have screenshots and amazing fan artwork throughout that really makes each and every page worth experiencing. I tried to make the page formatting feel classic, yet modern with large artwork so you can really see what each game offers.
The "Game Scholar" Leonard Herman will be providing an amazing Foreword to the book that will cover a brief history on the 1st console generation and the impact it has had on video games. Plus he is going to cover a few of the more obscure releases from that era!
To me, the best thing you can do is share your story with others and this is why backers will also have the opportunity to contribute. YOU will have the opportunity to write a full 4-8 page review, or just submit your story on why you love a certain Hidden Gaming Gem, your choice! The true greatness of the gaming community is that we can share our experiences with one another. Want to have your favorite unknown game included in the book? Here is your chance!

This is a re-release of my book that was published out in Europe in 2010 called "Hidden Treasures". The original company went out of business and shortly after I did a very basic paperback "Print on Demand" version, that is still floating around somewhere online. I kept the page formatting retro and of course am covering at least twice as many games as in the original book!
This 10th release by Hagen's Alley Books will bring that original book full circle with the amazing quality that you all know and love, plus offers you the opportunity to contribute as well. It also means this book will be the release to finally have the roman numeral "I" on the spine!
By popular demand, you can add a specific amount to your pledge and get any of my older books that I have in stock included with your Hidden Gaming Gems book. You'll save $10 on any book and shipping is included in the price!
$20 - The Nintendo Entertainment System Compendium - Our personal stories about the NES with beautiful full page artwork!
$40 - NES Oddities & the Homebrew Revolution - 500 pages of Unlicensed, PAL Exclusives, Famicom, FDS, Bootlegs and 500+ NES Homebrew games all in one gigantic book!
$40 - The Complete SNES Definitive Edition - 630 pages of SNES Mastery covering everything on the system including every US release, PAL Exclusives, Super Famicom, Homebrew and more!
For stretch goals I'm keeping things more content based this time around, along with additions to the book itself. The more the project earns, the more I'll be able to do with it!

One unique aspect to Hagen's Alley Books is that I have collaborated with individuals from all over the gaming community, and Hidden Gaming Gems is no different. Some people are well established, others are lesser known, but everyone shares one thing in common; a passion for video games!

If you are interested in joining in on this adventure, make sure you select the proper tier and you can be a part of this book too! This is one aspect that I was asked to continue from my last few books and giving people the opportunity to contribute to the book is something I plan to do going forward.
Risks and challenges
NOTE: International shipping rates from the US have gotten so expensive that it costs essentially double the price of the book to ship to most countries. For those of you that still want to get a book, it will be offered Internationally in the future. You will also have the opportunity to get any other bonuses and tiers as well, such as being able to contribute to the book. I also know a lot of people internationally who have a P.O. Box in the US to save on shipping costs, but that is entirely up to you.
As this isn't the first book I have had published, the main challenge is getting this all to print in the most efficient way possible. Coming to Kickstarter gets me the best exposure and allows people to support authors like myself in order to make our visions a reality! I honestly would never be able publish a book like this all on my own and this community is amazing for supporting ideas like mine.
I try to have my books in a semi-state of completion before bringing them to Kickstarter. However keep in mind that contributors, artists, an editor and physical production are all factors that could extend the time it takes for the book to come out in a timely manner. My previous project took multiple months beyond estimation because of an error in production and the fact that I want the books to be as perfect as possible for everyone who has supported the project meant there was a wait period. The date of December 2018 is a "worst-case" scenario and the plan is to have it out much earlier.
The goal amount for this project is based on the minimum amount it will cost me to do a small full book print run, after Kickstarter fees and taxes (which are the same as the previous projects). Any support beyond this amount will allow us to do a larger print run and add extra features, which, being an author, is an exciting prospect!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
