NEW STRETCH GOAL: $41,000
Okay, so we reached our goal. Why stop there?? Let's make this movie as AWESOME as we can. If we reach our stretch goal of $41,000, we will be adding a STOP-MOTION ANIMATION PIECE by genius Max Winston. Please prepare to have your mind-blown:
The Sub is a Kickstarter Staff Pick!

Look, I know what you're thinking: is The Sub another one of those movies about an anthropomorphic submarine sandwich that eats its creator and terrorizes New York City? And unfortunately, the answer is no (though wow, what a good idea!).
The Sub is the story of Mae Zalinski—a 20-something girl who reluctantly takes a job as a substitute teacher at her old rival high school. We follow Mae on her first day as things go from bad to worse as she starts to uncover the strange, possibly evil underbelly of this seemingly perfect high school. From the odd, overly-friendly vice-principal to the Children-of-the-Corn-like students, Mae is soon in way over her head. But you know what they say: high school can be a real pain in the class! (No one says that, but it's on our poster.)
Our movie will be fun and spooky in the vein of Ghostbusters, Shaun of the Dead, The Twilight Zone, and The Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horror" episodes. But The Sub is also a horror movie with heart. The emotional core of our movie is the connection that Mae makes with Penny, the only student left that doesn't seem to be a brainwashed zombie. Together, Mae and Penny will help each other try to survive high school. Their story will make you laugh and hopefully cry???
Our plan is to film at a high school in Alhambra, CA over two weekends in January 2016. We estimate the film itself having a running time of 15-18 minutes and plan to submit the film to top tier film festivals upon completion. If we can prove there is an audience for movies like this, we would love to turn The Sub into a feature film in the same way Whiplash made the jump from short film to feature.
It's scary how much fun The Sub will be!
Update #1 (11/3): We are thrilled to announce that Carrie Wampler (Austin & Ally, Parks and Recreation, the upcoming Jennifer Aniston film The Yellow Birds) has joined our cast as BECKY CUMBERDALE. Welcome aboard, Carrie!
Last but not least, we want to welcome cutie Barrett Carnahan (The Thundermans)!
Update #3 (11/20): Sure, he has a reputation for being an absolute monster on set, but we are still pleased to announce that Brian Stepanek (Transformers, Pain & Gain, The Island) has joined the cast as COACH FORTE. Hey, if he's good enough for Michael Bay, he's good enough for us.
More to come. Stay tuned!
Production: After hiring a professional cast and crew, the majority of our budget will go directly on screen. These costs include: locations, props, equipment rental, and special effects make-up. Yes, we're creating a practical monster with an Oscar-nominated special effects make-up team (more on them below). Yes, it's going to be awesome. Yes, they are responsible for this:
Post: We're cashing in a buttload of favors to keep post production costs down, including help from our friends at Cabin 21 who have done work for Ant-Man, Ash vs. Evil Dead and The Avengers: Age of Ultron (and that's just the A's!). Your donations will go directly towards music, sound design, title design and minimal visual effects.
Perks: Hey, you're scratching our back and we want to scratch yours. We've created some fun incentives for you that will only be available through this Kickstarter campaign. Check out that sweet poster up there!
Fees: Kickstarter will hopefully be our saving grace to make this movie, but they require 5% of our goal in order to create projects. Also, Amazon requires at least 3% for processing payments.
We've put together an amazing crew of professionals so far. Let's meet The Sub team...
Dan Samiljan (director/co-writer): By day, Dan works for Bill Lawrence's Doozer Productions helping produce TV shows such as Undateable, Ground Floor and Cougar Town. But by night, he's our fearless director. He's had short films play at SXSW, Slamdance and LA Film Fest. His latest short film The No Look Dunk recently played Nashville, Cleveland and Milwaukee Film Fests and can be seen here and right here:
The No Look Dunk was shot in one day for under $200. So imagine what we can do in four days with $38,000! Or more???
Dave Cain (co-writer): Dave was once an awkward high school substitute teacher, and now he brings his faux-faculty exploits to our script. As a writer, Dave has penned for PBS, Sprout, and The Jim Henson Company. In addition, he's created web series for Wired, DC Comics, and Lego.
Justin Wagman (producer): Justin Wagman is a producer and former director for worldwide distribution at Paramount Pictures where he worked on such films as the Paranormal Activity franchise and the upcoming film Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse. He also recently served as the post production supervisor on HBO Films' Cobain: Montage of Heck and produced acclaimed, Kickstarter-funded short films Titano and Fish Friend, which you can watch right here:
Fish Friend was shot by our incredible DP, Devin Doyle.
Noelle Hubbell (producer): Born and raised in Los Angeles, Noelle began her career as an intern at Panavision. She now works on network television shows like Rush Hour and Undateable. She has produced several independent short films, most recently Anti_Social, which will be screening at Ojai Film Festival. Yes, she is related to the telescope guy.
Tony Gardner (special effects make-up): Tony established the foundation for Alterian, Inc. in 1984 with the cult classic The Return of the Living Dead. The driving force behind Alterian, Gardner’s expertise ranges from practical make-up effects to sophisticated, computer-controlled animatronic characters. Tony & Alterian's endless credits include many of Dan's favorite movies: Army of Darkness, The Addams Family, Hocus Pocus, Last Action Hero, Adaptation, Three Kings, Robot & Frank, Darkman and the highly-underrated Freaked (Dan has a lot of favorite movies). Alterian received an Oscar nomination in 2013 for their incredible work on Bad Grandpa. Their latest work can next be seen in the new horror-comedy Freaks of Nature in theaters October 30th.
Devin Doyle (cinematographer): Devin got his start in camera working at Panavision Hollywood in 2006. He pursued his career by going freelance, joining Local 600, and eventually working his way up in the camera department. He has shot numerous short films, commercials, and music videos. Recently, his work on the Kickstarter-funded short film Fish Friend garnered a selection at the 2015 Emerging Cinematographer Awards. Check out some of his work here.
Amanda Lenker Doyle, CSA (casting director): Amanda started her career in commercials before transitioning to theatrical casting in 2009 working with Bialy/Thomas on The Walking Dead, Lie to Me and Terriers. In 2010, Amanda started working with Alexis Koczara & Christine Shevchenko. Their credits include Friends with Benefits, The Thundermans and most recently The Muppets and Black-ish for ABC. She is happily married to our super talented DP Devin Doyle.
Ashley Fenton (production designer): Ashley has production designed and art directed for film, television, web series, commercials and music videos for bands like Phoenix, TV on The Radio and Spoon. Her latest films are Noah Baumbach's Mistress America and Lake Bell's In a World... See her full list of super impressive credits here.
Gillian Zwick (costume designer): Gillian has been living in LA and working as a costumer on TV shows like Cougar Town, Ground Floor, The Carmichael Show and currently Rush Hour. Her most recent costume design work was for Too Late starring John Hawkes, which premiered at Los Angeles Film Fest.
Morgan Pritchard (editor): Morgan is an editor in Los Angeles and has worked on features, television, trailers, shorts, comedy, drama, you name it. He and Dan met in middle school (crazy, right?) and have been working together ever since, starting with their first short Two Reggies, all the way to their latest The No Look Dunk.
Reconnaissance Pictures (production company): Led by industry veteran Russ DeWolf, Reconnaissance Pictures is the new film production branch for Cabin 21, a post-production company that has worked on countless marketing campaigns for films including Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of The Galaxy. Cabin 21 boasts a top of the line post-production facility and sound team that has established themselves as an industry leader in editorial and design.

Need money to make monster movie. Please help.
Risks and challenges
Everyone over here is feeling confident about making The Sub. Most of the legwork (hiring the crew, finding the locations, putting together a reasonable schedule and budget, etc.) is already done! And we've gotten an amazing reaction from all of the actors who have read the script so far. The difficulties in producing a movie are well-known to our seasoned crew but we will be going into this as prepared as possible. At this point, the biggest risk AND challenge will be meeting our Kickstarter goal. As you probably know, if we don't meet our goal within 30 days, the money is returned to you and therefore: no movie. But with your help, we can do this together. Here's your chance to be the movie producer you always wanted to be.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
