About

The Stone Tape Theory holds that impressions of emotional or traumatic events can be recorded into rock and replayed under certain conditions.

Although science hasn’t proven this to be in the slightest bit true, this intriguing conjecture forms the premise for our musical project, The Stone Tapes.

We are Matt Peach, of Warwickshire, U.K., and Katherine Beem, of Baltimore, Maryland. Our trans-Atlantic partnership is the culmination of decades spent studying music and the occult.

The Stone Tapes is constructed around a premise: Our mysterious neighbor George A. Wilberforce gave us an old, battered cardboard box of tapes that he had recorded from ancient stones around the British Isles. We have taken our modern musicological know-how and made music of them.

We released the first volume of The Stone Tapes, entitled Avebury, in November 2016. An initial edition of cassette tapes quickly sold out, as did a subsequent edition of discs on the Reverb Worship Label. Along with music, our cassette editions included a package of photographs and written materials that we created.

Folk Horror Revival “highly recommended” Avebury, calling the album a “rather beautiful and unique… understated yet atmosphere-drenched excursion into haunted electronics.” You can read Grey Malkin’s complete review here: https://folkhorrorrevival.com/2016/11/22/review-the-stone-tapes-avebury/

Digital downloads of Avebury are still available on our Bandcamp site: https://thestonetapes.bandcamp.com/album/the-stone-tapes-avebury

Now we are preparing our second volume for release, continuing the story of our investigations into George’s mysterious tapes. This time, we’re exploring the stones and legends of the Kingdom of Mercia, introducing new characters and special musical guests, and falling further into occultic mysteries.

As with Avebury, we will be producing the second volume ourselves. However, we need a little help from you.

Reaching our goal of $2,200 will help us have our next album professionally mastered, as well as paying for the costs associated with bringing out a physical release on vinyl record.

That’s right – the next edition of The Stone Tapes will feature a high-quality 12-inch L.P vinyl record in a premium spined sleeve, digital download code, along with the assortment of ancillary materials we’ve become known for.

In return for a pledge of $20, you will recieve one copy of The Stone Tapes: The Kingdom of Mercia on vinyl record from a limited edition of 300.  A pledge of $10 will get you a digital download.

Get involved, spread the word, be part of the George Albert Wilberforce story, and help us continue to unravel the mysteries of the stones.

Risks and challenges

The album is nearly complete; it just needs to be mastered. The biggest potential risks are unforeseen delays in the record manufacturing process (or if we get kidnapped). We'll be keeping you updated as we approach release.
