The Startup Kids is a documentary about young web entrepreneurs in the U.S. and Europe. It contains interviews with the founders of Vimeo, Soundcloud, PlayFish, Wordpress, Posterous and many others who talk about how they started their company and their lives as an entrepreneur. The documentary also compares the different environments, resources and attitudes of entrepreneurs on either side of the Atlantic.

Who are we?

We are two Icelandic girls, Sesselja and Vala, who founded our first company in 2009, shortly after the economic collapse of Iceland. Along with editing our documentary we are now working on our new startup, KinWins.com

We wanted to motivate other young people to go into entrepreneurship so we grabbed a video camera and bought ourselves a one way ticket to the United States. We traveled to New York and San Francisco and met lots of amazing people along the way.

We came in to contact with everything from young people starting out for the first time with their office in their bedroom at their parents house, to successful entrepreneurs sitting in an office with a view over the San Francisco skyline.

Of course we also had all kinds of adventures along the way. Getting lost in the New York subway system, getting questioned by the Google Police for trying to sneak into the Google cafeteria on a food hunt (who knew that they have their own police force wearing intimidating Google uniforms) and sweating through an interview after doing a marathon sprint across Central Park to get there on time.

In Europe we traveled to London, Berlin, Stockholm and Copenhagen. The adventures continued. Late night parties with the crazy London start-up people, an embarrassing moment when a little language misunderstanding made us think we were speakers not bloggers at a conference in Stockholm and when we were suddenly elevated to the roles of rockstars during a Berlin start-up brunch.

Overall we met some amazing and inspirational people and have around 70 interviews to put together in a feature length documentary. Here's a list of all the interviews recorded in the U.S. and Europe

Why Kickstarter?

We got a grant from the “Youth in Action” program, which is an European Union fund. The grant covered our travels and the filming. We need additional funding to finish post-production as well as funds for promoting and premiering the film.
