A Word About This Project

We are writing songs and preparing to record a new album – our third.  We plan to record, release and promote an album that will prove to be our finest work to date.

We have set our campaign goal at $25,000. 

Kickstarter is an All-or-Nothing platform, meaning, if we do not reach this goal of $25,000, we will receive nothing.  Bearing this in mind, we created a bare minimum budget to arrive at the lowest dollar amount we will need to make the album we want to make. 

The $25,000 will go toward:

Recording – we'll return to Snug Recording Studios in Derby, England to work with producers Rich Collins and Robin Newman.

Mastering – once the album has been produced, we will send it off to Los Angeles, where a Grammy-award-winning engineer will master the songs.

Video Production – to create a visual product in support of the album, we will produce eye-catching videos for 1-3 songs.   

We like to give fans a music video for every song on an album.  To keep this going, we will flex own film-making muscles to create videos for all remaining songs on the album - without dipping into the campaign budget.  

Promotion – to support this release, we will work with our team to launch a worldwide, grassroots campaign to get radio airplay as well as album reviews/feature stories in magazines, newspapers and music blogs.

When Success Strikes! 

Of course we will be elated and extremely grateful to reach the $25,000 goal!  In the event that the campaign raises MORE than the stated goal, we will allocate the additional funds as follows:

Additional Promotion – with additional funding, we will hire a full-time Public Relations Firm to launch a worldwide media campaign spanning 2013/14, including but not limited to.... 

  • Targeted radio-play of single releases, 
  • Guest performances and interviews on radio and television talk shows, 
  • Extensive British summer festival performances and European tour. 
  • Syncing with US-based music supervisors to place the music in film, TV and commercials.

US Tour – while a 2013 tour of the UK and Continental Europe are already in the works, if we can raise a total of $50,000 or more, we will plan for a US Tour with the full band, as well.

On A Personal Note...

The five members of this band all hope you will become a part of this project with us.  We are really excited and happy at the prospect of creating a new album and we’re deeply committed to making the BEST music we can…an album that will stand up against time and will help to launch us, finally, onto the world stage.

THE SONS is a British indie rock band whose music incorporates sounds from various other genres, including rhythm and blues, folk and country, with a heavy emphasis on intricately layered musical composition and lyrical complexity. These guys are musicians’ musicians.

The band has been together for many years – playing gigs all over the UK and touring Continental Europe.  While fans and critics have always responded very positively to the band and to their music, any type of notable success has eluded them….earning them the moniker “The UK’s Best Kept Secret”.

In July, 2011, on the heels of a European release of their second studio album, the band made some bold decisions.  They chose to launch their own label – Cannon Fodder Recordings.  Under this label, they decided to release their music in the United States for the first time.  Their album, The Prime Words Committee, became available to US listeners through digital distribution on iTunes, Amazon and the like, and also via physical distribution.  The Sons signed onto a short-term contract to sell physical copies of the album in Independent Records Stores across the US. 

The band still remembers the first time they heard of someone in America going to a shop and buying their CD.  A kid named Matt found their CD at the famous “Criminal Records” in Atlanta, Georgia.  He bought the CD and then sent a tweet to the band to tell them how much he liked the songs.  When they got that tweet – and thought about some random person finding their music in a shop in the US – it sent a ripple of hope that things were really changing!

Since then, The Sons have seen some very encouraging momentum and “buzz” surround their music.  The first US-based industry nod came from Pandora.  The Sons’ got word their music had been accepted into Pandora’s Music Genome Project in November, 2011.  By January, their songs “Scientists” and “Better Days” were being played in rotation on Pandora.

Growing the US fanbase became the number one goal.  However, a US tour was out of the question.  For five men to travel with their instruments and gear – the cost was far too prohibitive.  So they had to be creative and think of a way to get the essence of a live show across The Pond without actually travelling across it themselves.  

Alas!  The Sons’ Podcasts were born.  Thirteen episodes, each one highlighting a different song off the album, were filmed and released between Fall, 2011 and Spring, 2012.  To create what was really a weekly television program, The Sons had to become very skilled very quickly at filming, editing, green screens… and acting.  Some podcasts were very well-received.  Some were not as popular.  By the end, The Sons were tired of the whole process and could not wait to finish filming the final episode, so they could get back to making music.  

Gradually they watched their US fanbase grow.  In July, 2011 the band had 167 Facebook fans – of the 167, one fan was based in the US.  Today, their Facebook fanbase has grown to roughly 1,500 – the country with the largest percentage of those fans is the United States representing more than a third. 

With their focus and efforts directed at the US market, The Sons were happy when, somewhat unexpectedly, higher-profile invitations started coming from Europe, as well.  In April, 2012, the band played to an industry VIP Showcase crowd at London's Dublin Castle.  Over the summer the were invited to headline German music festivals - ManiFEST and Alstadtfest.  In the US, they received their second industry nod when LA-based music licensing service, TAXI Music, selected the band as their ‘Featured Artist’ for the month of September. This feature shed a spotlight on the band's music for a broad audience of music supervisors for television and film.  

The Sons continue to ride this wave of momentum.  The band are off on another tour before the end of the year - playing intimate acoustic shows in California and then regrouping to play full band shows in Switzerland and Germany:

Risks and challenges

Once the campaign is funded, the band will receive the funds in mid-January 2013. We plan to head into the studio soon thereafter.

We're well into the songwriting process now - with several songs already on the boil. The plan is to create 20-25 full songs, then choose only the best ones for the album.

We're confident in our ability to record the album, as we've done this bit before already...and we've got the same team in place. Once completed, the album will hoist its sails and head off to Los Angeles, where the team at Universal Music will complete the mastering. We worked with this lot over the summer on a small project and they're a top notch group....very professional and cool to work with and their mastering rooms are mint!

The next bit will be promotion.

The photos and the website - we have a bit of an ace in our pocket in that Steven is also a very talented graphic designer. He has a discerning eye for visual context and color. He helps us get the best from photographs, web pages, album artwork...all the visual stuff.

Getting the album into the hands of key people - that is the rather challenging bit. Between the 5 of us and our manager, we've been going at this full steam for a year now, with limited results. We're at the stage now where we need a full time PR team working to promote our music and our band as a "brand". The challenge is - our initial budget does not include funding for this. So we'll hope that the campaign raises enough extra to fund this. If it doesn't, we'll be looking for other avenues to raise the funds to pay a PR firm.

That said, we're all seasoned and experienced enough...with enough talented support around us....to feel confident that we have what it takes to turn this project into a winner!
