Thesis Labs: Series Zero. The first in a series of stylistically minimalist, CE-Approved, armoured motorcycle gear. Dual purpose Kangaroo leather jackets for motorcyclists that can be worn as both fashion garments and protective equipment. Thesis explores the medium between sophistication and adrenaline.
Safety gear doesn't have to look or feel like safety gear. The most protective track-focused motorcycle jackets ever produced. And this is where we begin. This isn't a styling exercise, this is motorcycle gear completely reengineered. Our product is user-centric, ergonomic in function and visually proportioned for the human form. Series Zero provides the highest level of protective technology adapted to the language of contemporary fashion.
Motorcycling exists among the last of the high adrenaline, truly visceral experiences. Those of us who ride accept the level of risk involved. Safety gear gives you the confidence to discover your limits and those of your machine. Our gear is carefully constructed and over-engineered to always perform when needed. Not just from physical harm, it protects the spirit of the rider.
Designed to respond to you and your every movement, our gear will never hold you back. With Series Zero, we've reduced our armoured weight (2.7kg/6lbs) and thickness (avg 1.4mm) to half of a comparable protective product. Our lightweight Kangaroo leather is the same material used by professional racers.
All Series Zero garments are designed to meet the highest standard of protective apparel in the world -- CE EN 13595:1-2012 VO6, the French/European Union's safety Standard for Personal Protective Equipment. Due to its rigorously high standard, most brands choose to forego this level of testing. In fact, since its inception in 2002, only a handful of products have ever been certified to legally use the term PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
Series Zero is designed to exceed both the VO6 and the 2002 standard.
We're partnered with a PPE European Notified Body CE Testing Lab. We haven't been approved yet. We've completed our initial rounds of testing and the exterior shell alone has met Level 1 requirements with a 3.1s abrasion resistance time -- higher than most protective garments in the market. We're waiting on results for the final round and based on our research, we're expecting 8+ seconds of abrasion resistance along with all the necessary burst/cut/puncture resistances. We promise the jackets you receive will be approved to the highest (Level 2) standard.
Series Zero isn't just a product, it's an integrated platform. Hidden beneath the minimal Kangaroo exterior shell is one of the most complicated ready-to-wear fashion garments currently in manufacture. The Series Zero jackets are constructed as two separate garments with diametrically opposing seams, each layer augmenting another to increase protection and performance. The two garments are tailored and sewn together in final assembly for fit and finish.
Series Zero is heavily upgradable and designed to be forward-compatible with future add-ons and upgrades. These in-development proprietary add-ons will dramatically increase the range of usability and protection.
The design is characterized by its high degree of movement. Features include passive airflow technology through our aramid-Kevlar stretch articulation panels and internal adjustment fasteners. Our partners at Forcefield Body Armour are providing 2011 CE-Approved "NeT" armour elbow and shoulder armour inserts. The elbow protectors can be removed externally though a proprietary zippered opening along the sleeves' curved main seam.
Cooling isn’t just important for your bike. Temperature regulation is vital to keep you comfortable and focused. Our system utilizes zippered intake vents along the arms and chest with ventilated shoulder panels in the rear to create a passive airflow channel which pulls fresh air through the jacket.
Our super premium materials and minimalist aesthetic integrate to form our distinct slim silhouette, something typically impossible while retaining a CE Approved (PPE) level of protection. Through an innovative usage of material and seams, the resulting product offers a high degree of feedback and uncompromising movement.
An ethically produced and sustainable full-grain Kangaroo Leather (0.7mm) exterior forms the garment's exterior. The beautiful multi-directional patterns are actually what make Kangaroo-hide the thinnest, lightest weight and strongest leather available. The jackets are cut to mold to its user’s form and prolonged usage will dramatically increase comfort while the garment develops a unique patina. Alone, the garment's Kangaroo leather shell exceeds the French/European CE EN 13595:-1:2012 VO6 testing standards for Personal Protective Equipment (3.1s).
Hidden below the Kangaroo exterior, the Vectran "Core" layer provides a significant level of augmented protection. Within our garments, Vectran is attached with seams diametrical to the Kangaroo exterior layout. Acting as a redundant system separate from the exterior, the Vectran “Core” is our primary protective layer. Based on our materials research we're expecting a 7+ second abrasion time added to our garments. It also protects you from material and seam bursts, cuts and punctures. We apply our Vectran layer in a manner which exceeds all product safety requirements.
This high tech material is used as the main protective layer in the current NASA Spacesuit. Within industry testing and against all motorcycling related metrics, our lightweight Vectran is shown to be at least 3-5x stronger than Kevlar (29/49) and other aramid-type materials.
The Series Zero interior is constructed for maximum comfort. The interior is blind stitched throughout and utilizes three different liners to meet appropriate demands within the garment's major zones. All interior fabrics are from our Swiss partners at Schoeller Textiles -- an industry leader in innovative high-performance, high tech fabrics.
- The main interior liner is anti-microbial, prevents friction burns and provides sweat-wicking properties so you can guarantee your garment always stays fresh. This layer has excellent thermal properties and as a bonus, will not require washing.
- A tough Polyamide fabric provides the garment's structural strength. Acting as the garment's core, this layer interconnects with all other layers to maximize fluidity and responsiveness. Our polyamide also provides excellent thermal and sweat-wicking properties.
- A low friction polyester liner, used sparingly, to ensure the garment is easy to get in and out of. You'll find it in the base of the arms.
We've chosen hardware consistent with the exceptional materials used to create our garments. Italian manufactured hypersilver Riri zippers decorate our dark, minimalist silhouettes. Our notions are American made.
The ultimate symbol of quality. Riri zippers are known for their world class finishing, buttery smooth precision, incredible strength and reliability. Like our meticulously constructed garments, each tooth is individually polished in a 10-step process before receiving an electroplated finish. You won't find Riri zippers on anything but the most uncompromising garments.
Our anodized aluminum interior adjusters and coated button-snaps are made in the USA.
Sizing between brands is an often difficult problem. Mostly sizing is based on the idiosyncrasies of both the designer and place of manufacture. Unfortunately a large number of brands also choose to employ vanity sizing which convolutes the whole process.
For this reason we have purposely chosen a numbered sizing system to remove any preconceptions of sizing. Apply your actual suit size (do not use any motorcycle garments -- as they are typically a few sizes off). If unsure, please have someone measure your chest horizontally at the widest points.
Series Zero is priced higher than other products. You're paying for a highly intensive manufacturing process and the best ethically produced and high technology materials. To ensure quality, each garment is produced from start-to-finish by a single master-artisan. You're not paying for advertising campaigns, celebrity endorsements or expensive luxury branding.
This price would be impossible through traditional retail avenues. Our products feature exceptional quality control, our way of ensuring that our jackets will last forever. As the highest cost-to-produce garment in the industry, Series Zero represents a new tier in motor-sports safety technology. This isn't about profits. It's about using the best technology and the best materials available to make the best gear possible.
As a thank you to our backers, you’re only paying for the cost of production – we will not be generating profitability. The next time our Series Zero garments come up for sale the price will be a more sustainable $2350CAD/$1800USD
A celebration of material and construction, our minimalist iteration is designed for the contemporary motorcyclist. Aerodynamics dictate the slim silhouette, conforming to the wearer's body without restricting movement. High arm holes and the shimmer of a peeking zipper ground the vertical axis. Narrow lapels are proportioned to the strong natural shoulders. Hidden articulation gussets increase range of motion and facilitate responsiveness. The front is cropped short and extends backward, designed to conceal an armoured protector and envelops the tailbone. Seams are triple stitched and kept to an absolute minimum, deliberately located outside of high-risk zones. Visually refined with a high degree of functionality.

Risks and challenges
Our completed design follows a heavily researched, highly iterative, two-year product development process. You’re only paying for product. No campaign resources will be used for any past or future research. Materials are specified, contracts have been signed, product testing performed by an accredited European Notified Body and our NYC manufacturers are ready for a production run.
Throughout all processes, we're assisted by the amazing team at the award-winning NYC based fashion incubator, Manufacture New York. We've already built several prototypes with our manufacturers so the only foreseeable challenge lies in QA -- however our team will be present in the factories during all of the construction to ensure a smooth, timely delivery.
We're already set up our legal and accounting and are partnered with a globally recognized logistics firm to ensure no hangups during the delivery phases.
Once the campaign begins to pick up we will order our specified materials along with a small amount of specialized cutting and stamping equipment. To keep things fun we'll keep our backers updated with photos and a video-log throughout the entire manufacturing process.
We are expecting a realistic timeline of 6-8 weeks to receive materials and another 4-6 for manufacturing. Including logistics and obstacles, we expect the products to be at your door between 14-20 weeks.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
