WHO WE ARE...
We are The Singer and The Songwriter (Rachel Garcia and Thu Tran). We write and perform our own original music which blends jazz, folk, and pop together for a rich, dynamic sound.
This project will help us complete and independently release our debut, full-length album, What a Difference a Melody Makes.
We are so incredibly proud of this album. We feel that it is a fully-realized representation of our aesthetic, and will be the perfect introduction of The Singer and The Songwriter to the world!
If you have been to our live shows, you may have heard many of the songs on this record - but you have never heard these songs fully orchestrated with piano, vocal harmony, strings, horns, bass, drums and more!
Part of our vision for this record was to invite talented artists and musicians into our process and let them contribute to the songs. We wanted these other artists with varying aesthetics and backgrounds to bring their unique voices to the album; listening to our songs change and grow with each new musical contribution has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience - and we think you are going to love the way it sounds!
We've had the great fortune of working with such amazingly talented and generous collaborators. Check them out!

- Shannon MacMillan (Backing Vocals, Harmony Arrangement)

We started making music together in 2009 after a road trip together up the Pacific Coast Highway. Since then, we have been writing and performing our original music throughout Los Angeles, developing our sound which has matured and expanded to incorporate our love of classic jazz standards, traditional folk music, and catchy pop songwriting.
The Eastsider LA writes, "This duo’s set of original material did clearly mine the annals of Gypsy Jazz (as well as ‘60s folk) for inspiration. However, The Singer and The Songwriter are a Los Angeles original."
In 2012, our song, "The Art of Missing You" won for Best Song in the Miscellaneous Category of the West Coast Songwriters International Song Contest. Listen to the rough, unmastered version below!
Are you curious to hear it once it's finished? Us too!
This 13-song debut album will culminate over 2 years of hard work, and will see the beginning of an exciting chapter in our musical career.
100% of your pledges will go directly into the completion of the album. Though we have finished the initial tracking for the album, there is still a lot of post-production work that needs to be done in order to make the album sound balanced, clear, and cohesive.
In addition to that, your support will allow us to have physical CDs made so that we can sign them and send them to you.
We have carefully budgeted our goal, so that your pledges will cover the following costs:
- CD Pressing/Packaging
- CD Duplication and Distribution
- Album Artwork - Design, photography, Layout
- Prizes for Kickstarter Backers (YOU!)
- Administrative Fees (Kickstarter/Amazon)
Risks and challenges
The good news is that the hard part is already over with! All the songs and parts have been recorded, but now it's just a matter of getting that music to sound good enough to put in your ears!
As this is our first album, we fully expect to hit a few bumps in the road along the way, though. We cannot be certain of the time frame for the mixing and mastering process (which has been estimated to us to take about a month), so if it gets unexpectedly delayed, it may slow down the process of release. However, we feel that it's important to not rush any part of the process; we want this to be an album we will all be proud of in the end.
Thank you so much for your generosity and support. We cannot wait to share our music with you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
