About this project
Plants are WONDERFUL. They’re nice to look at. They’re good for the air. They can brighten any room. Bottom line, plants make people happy. A happy little plant to live on the sill. Seems simple, right? But getting there can be a challenge! Especially when you live in a city. You have to:
Find the right plant for your particular living conditions (often less than ideal in an apartment)
Find a container (unless you want it to stay in that lovely plastic tub…)
Get soil & supplies home for re-potting (your walk up is how many floors?!)
What we’ve learned through our own attempts to find cool plants for our homes or to give as gifts is that something that should be simple – a beautiful plant in an artistic container – just doesn’t exist.
We want to make it easy and fun to find unique potted plants that will enhance any living space – or – someone’s day, day after day. We think it should be enjoyable to own a plant and watch it grow. Our goal is to bring together thoughtfully chosen plants – long life, easy care, able to thrive in an indoor city setting – with an eclectic mix of planter styles.
To do this, we need your help! Your donations will:
Cover costs for artist-made prototypes – As we searched for containers worthy of our plants, we realized that most often, we'll have to create what we want. Plants demand specific qualities from their homes, and yet many manufactured "planters" don't fit the bill. Plus, we want our containers to be functional and well made, but also look like works of art! That’s why we’ve found established and up-and-coming artists to create containers. Your support will help cover the costs of the prototypes that must be created before we finalize designs.
Purchase equipment to keep plants happy & healthy – While our plants wait to be placed in their new containers, we want them to be as comfortable as possible. This means purchasing indoor greenhouses, fertilizer, misters, etc. We’ve chosen plants that will thrive in apartment settings and will be easy to care for, but we think they deserve to be as stress-free as possible as they await being re-potted and transported to their future home.
Develop a shipper to get plants to you in one piece – Helping a plant find its perfect container mate is just one part of making plants easy and fun. We also want to deliver our hand-potted creations ready for your sill, and that means in one piece, in good condition, and without messy dirt falling everywhere. We must develop both a shipper for NYC hand-delivered plants, as well as for expanded shipping in the future.
By supporting The Sill, you are not only helping to make our dream come true (a plant on every sill!), but you are also supporting local nurseries and artisans. You are fostering creativity of, collaboration with, and promotion of talented ceramic artists, many without a larger platform to display their work.
Our sincere hope is that one day there will be a plant on every sill, making for greener homes and happier people. Girls can dream, right??
HOW DOES KICKSTARTER WORK?
Kickstarter is all or nothing. If we don’t reach our goal, we will not receive any of the donations pledged, and you will not be charged. If we do reach our goal, your credit card will be charged on the day the campaign ends. To thank you for your support, we’ve put together fun rewards. We appreciate your help making our dream a reality!
An important note about our rewards: We wish more than anything that we could send a plant to all of our supporters. Unfortunately, we first need to develop a plant-friendly shipper and delivery system – one of the reasons we are asking for your help. Instead, from the $100 reward and up, we’re sending artistic, functional, well made planters into which you can re-pot your favorite, or a new, green friend.
$1 OR MORE - Good karma. Our endless gratitude. And the knowledge that you've helped a very deserving plant find its container mate, which is what this is all about. We seriously couldn’t do this without you – THANK YOU for your support!
$10 OR MORE- All of the good karma and gratitude as above, expressed in a heartfelt hand-written note on seed paper. We couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to send our thanks than on a beautiful sheet of seed paper that you can read, then plant and grow!
$25 OR MORE - All of the above (good karma + seed paper note) and The Sill canvas tote bag. We wish everyone could carry a cute little plant around with them all the time … But instead, we think a tote works nicely.
$50 OR MORE - All of the above (good karma + seed paper note + canvas tote) and The Sill logo t-shirt. Wear your support and spread the word about The Sill.
$100 OR MORE - All of the above (good karma + seed paper note + canvas tote + t-shirt) and a tiny “thimble” ceramic planter w/drainage hole & saucer. Put a mini cactus, succulent, or air plant in this adorable 1.5” H x 2” W container and you’re sure to bring a little smile to any sill.
$250 OR MORE - All of the above (good karma + seed paper note + canvas tote + t-shirt + thimble ceramic planter) and small porcelain “tuck pot” w/drainage hole & saucer. This is the smaller (3” H x 4.5” W) version of the beautiful porcelain planter featured on the sill in our video. Any lush green foliage will look great in this tuck pot. If you live in a challenging (low light, dry) environment, shoot us a message with more information about your home/office and we’ll recommend plants suitable for you.
$500 OR MORE - All of the above (good karma + seed paper note + canvas tote + t-shirt + thimble ceramic planter + small tuck pot) and large “tuck pot” w/drainage hole & saucer. This is the beautiful porcelain planter (4.5” H x 6.5” W) featured on the sill in our video. The set of tuck pots will look stunning on a sunny sill. Again, we think any lush green foliage will look great in this tuck pot. If you live in a challenging (low light, dry) environment, shoot us a message with more information about your home/office and we’ll recommend plants suitable for you.
$750 OR MORE - All of the above (good karma + seed paper note + canvas tote + t-shirt + thimble ceramic planter + small tuck pot + large tuck pot) and hand-constructed, white stoneware geometric planter (6" H x 5" W x 10" L) by NYC-based artist Eric Bonnin. This is the planter sitting on the table between us in the video, and also shown in photos on this page. The succulent of your choosing will be fashionably at home in this modern container.
$1000 OR MORE - All of the above (good karma + seed paper note + canvas tote + t-shirt + thimble ceramic planter + small tuck pot + large tuck pot + geometric planter) and custom-made ceramic windowsill protector. This is the chicest way to protect your sill! Send us the dimensions of your favorite windowsill, and we will commission a beautiful ceramic protector from one of our favorite NYC artists, upon which you can place any and all planters without worry of water damage. Perfect for the person that likes to forego saucers for a minimalist look.
**International backers please add additional shipping amounts as indicated to the right in award tiers.**
THANK YOU to everyone for your support – financial, or otherwise. Please help us to spread the word by telling your family, friends, and fellow plant lovers. We are extremely passionate about bringing our vision to life, and we couldn’t do it without you!
