In March 2015, a unique recording project took place in Manchester for a very special reason! We offered professional audio and video recording to 26 independent artists and recorded 80 tracks. This was to pay tribute to, and showcase a small part of Manchester's hugely diverse independent music scene. The full collection of this music will be released throughout this campaign.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP!
However, we need your help to do this again! We are asking for the modest amount of £6969 as we want to record another 25 - 30 independent bands, more than doubling this snapshot of a hugely diverse musical community.
This really is a modest amount considering the size of the project. It is the minimum amount we need to be able to accomplish a similar size set of recordings again. The more money we raise, the more bands we can record, and the higher quality we can make the sessions and the promotion of it. We can continue to help form new creative connections within the community, and help the independent musicians as much as possible for free.
The possibilities are endless as to where this can go in the long run, but this is the crucial beginning. If we can achieve our goal we will have united a huge amount of Manchester's independent musicians together. Without at least hitting our minimum goal the prospect of a second set of sessions are merely ideas at this point. Without your help, the sessions will simply remain a small tribute to this huge community, which would be such a shame considering what we could do if we reach our target. We already have over 35 phenomenal artists requesting to be part of the second sessions. Please help us help them!
Please check our full list to see all the incentives on offer. Also, anyone who donates for the hell of it gets entered into a very special super secret prize draw. We know everyone is usually low on funds just after Christmas and New Years, however, it won't be until mid February that you get charged. So please consider helping us make our dream a reality.
Now for the all-important question:
WHY DOES THIS PROJECT EXIST?
This project started with a venue and a constantly evolving team of people who had one goal. This was to support the local creative community and create a hub where creative people could meet, form new connections and enjoy the music and art that they loved. By providing a location where all the local talent could be showcased side-by-side, the aim was to help all the hard-working independent artists in any way possible. We achieved the aim of taking a derelict building and turning it into a thriving fully licensed venue, with this community at the heart of it. This was no easy task and a huge number of people, too many to mention, put so much into the venue to achieve this goal. Virtually all involved were local creative people, all of whom shared the dream of this creative hub continuing to be a home for so many inspiring musicians and artists. Without these people none of this would be possible and we salute every single one of them, they know who they are!
However, after nearly 6 years due to reasons out of our control despite the success of the business, we lost creative control over the venue. A large part of the team felt our ethos of supporting the local community was being compromised. It was then we made the hard decision to leave the venue. Thus, The Sessions of March was born.
The old general manager of the venue wanted to do something special, something to help echo the feelings of why all these people put so much into the venue for all those years. Namely, the amazing music that made our lives worth living on a weekly basis. He took the last money in his bank account and organised a combination of WR Audio, Midnight Sounds and Lions Den Productions to form the sessions team. All of these people had been involved with the venue previously, and agreed to cover the audio/visual side of this mammoth project for what can only be described as ridiculous ‘mates rates’. We then organised for 26 amazing bands/artists to record a total of 80 tracks. These were all musicians we discovered through the venue and wanted to help promote as we felt they bloody well deserved it! We returned to the venue one last time to give birth to the first set of sessions.
This, to begin with, was supposed to be just a nice way of saying goodbye to a chapter in our lives and showcase this musical community. However, as we recorded the sessions, the musicians involved were constantly asking what’s next, and recommending more and more bands they would love to see on the sessions. We ourselves already had a huge list of bands we unfortunately could not fit on the first sessions due to time and budget constraints. It became clear that the independent community was fully in support of the project and wanted it to grow. Therefore, the plan was formed to launch this Kickstarter to try and raise enough money to do it all over again. The venue dream is lost for now but the sessions dream is truly alive.
This time, we want to use a variety of venues and we want to make it as the video says: 'Bigger, Better, Faster’ and be able to focus our entire attention on the project whilst still being able to eat and maybe pay some rent. We also want to be able to cover transport and expenses for the bands involved. We all struggled to get sessions stuff sorted sooner as we were all broke, and needed to take on so much other work in order to keep a roof above our heads. Kris, who funded and organised the first sessions will not make a penny from this considering all the costs from the first lot. This is a project of love not profits!
We organised some very special collaborations for the first sessions and we intend to do more of this if we succeed in our campaign. We have also noticed a number of musicians comment on the fact, there is certain local music they hadn't heard before. People are often so close, and yet so far from each other in this hugely varied musical city. This is the smallest way in which we feel we can help the independent music scene , by linking it together, and allowing the community itself to discover nearby musicians they never knew existed.
The Session of March really does mean a lot to a lot of people who want to see a showcase of this community in one place. We have a huge list of incentives and hopefully will be adding to them as the campaign continues. Members of the independent music community have very kindly donated various items, but a lot of them are one-offs so grab them while you can, and support a good cause at the same time. We have incentives for everyone’s budget and you can always decide to donate regardless of incentives if you are feeling generous.
WHO WOULD FEATURE ON THE SECOND SESSIONS?
We have so many more amazing artists than this interested and will try to include as many as possible. We also have many stretch goals and the sooner we reach our goal the sooner we can reveal these.
We truly appreciate any help you can give and we hope you enjoy the music from the first sessions. If you decide not to donate but want to help please help us share this video and the music to as many people as possible. This gives us the best chance of success and would mean the world to us and so many others.
We love Manchester's Independent music community, we feel it is stronger when linked together, and we want everyone to be able to see it in all its glory. Who knows what these bands will go on to do. We want to create amazing memories for everyone involved in the scene and beyond. Also, some of this music is actually quite rare and there would be no record of it otherwise. With music of this quality we do not want that to happen.
Thank you so much for taking the time to look at our project and we look forward to making the second set of sessions a reality with your help!
Peace and purpose to you all x The Sessions of March team
THE CHERRIES ON THE CAKE
Also our good friend and lover, the legendary Rich Reason (HitnRun, LVLZ) has agreed to play congas on a session if we succeed. This is almost worth a kickstarter of its own...
This project has also been backed by Old J Spiced Rum. These guys truly support independent music, and we have worked with them in a variety of ways many times before. Good booze + Good People !
Risks and challenges
We will have around 2 weeks after the campaign finishes to organise the locations and timetable of the next sessions. We then have to organise the fulfilment of all the incentives offered. These are all in place, but we have deliberately set later estimated delivery dates than we think we can accomplish. This is so we do not disappoint through delayed arrival of certain items.
We will have a huge logistical task ahead of us, the continued promotion and development of the project and the usual unexpected life issues that inevitably arise.
Yet we have put thousands of hours and pounds into making the first sessions happen, with no real financial incentive for ourselves. This shows how dedicated we are to making this work. We believe we can overcome any obstacle in our way, especially considering the inspiration from the artists we are working with.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
