                             AcadeCon 2019: Ours goes to 7

AcadeCon is a 3-day tabletop gaming convention at the Dayton Convention Center, in Dayton, Ohio. November 8th - 10th, 2019.  

AcadeCon would not exist if not for The RPG Academy podcast and they are forever intertwined.  The motto of the Podcast is "if you're having fun, you're doing it right!' and our goal has always been to help more people play games and have more fun while doing it.

We're not into telling our listeners they should play the way we play, but instead - play the way that's the most fun for them at their table and with their group.  And that's the same attitude we bring to AcadeCon.  We don't go in for edition waring or gatekeeping. AcadeCon is open to gamers of all types and experiences levels. No matter which games you love, you're likely to find people at AcadeCon who also love that game and if not you'll probably find people open to learning it from you or happy to teach you the game(s) they love. We want to provide a place for people to play these games and have fun. 

AcadeCon started in Michael's basement and no matter how large it grows, the idea of playing games with your friends will always be at the heart of what we're trying to do and that's where the AcadeCon motto comes from:  Gaming with friends, old and new!

In addition to playing games with friends (old and new), AcadeCon offers almost unprecedented access to some amazing RPG designers, authors, and fan favorite podcasting personalities. At AcadeCon, these people are there to have fun and play games, just like you. Join into one of their events and don't be surprised if they join into one of yours!

                                 What's AcadeCon all about?

AcadeCon is specifically designed to be a smaller, non-traditional convention. We are not trying to (nor do we want to) compete with or replace the huge conventions that attract a national audience. At our convention, you're going to get access to some of the most amazing GMs and players, a better chance to play in the games you want, the opportunity to spend time and game with special guests, and time to hang out with some of the best gamers in the world—the fans of our show and returning AcadeCon alumni.

AcadeCon 2019 is our 7th annual gaming convention. From that first year of 15 people to last year with over 500, AcadeCon continues to grow. Help us grow by coming to play games with us and telling all your friends about us as well.

OTHER SUPER COOL THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING

We're super excited to have ConTessa joining us for this year's event.

ConTessa is a nonprofit organization that runs events of all types at conventions all over the United States. Our primary goal is to increase the number of marginalized people in all aspects of tabletop gaming through the power of positive representation. Our volunteers run and teach roleplaying games, miniature war games, board games, LARPs, and card games. In addition, we run board game socials using our own board game library, panels on topics that span the whole range of gaming experiences, and provide our volunteers with everything they need to succeed from snacks to dry-erase game mats. Together, we move the needle on making conventions more diverse. 


Games on Demand is an open-gaming event put on at various conventions, sometimes under the “Indie Games Exposion” organizational label. It typically consists of designated area with tables, materials, and a constant supply of enthusiastic volunteers prepared to run a variety of independent and cutting edge games.

Our inner sci-fi nerds are insanely happy to have this chance to pull on those costumes that we don't tell anyone about and log some time on the Artemis Space Bridge Simulator. Sponsored by Dwarven Woodworking this is going to one of the highlights of the convention. Registration information for these games will be included in the gaming schedule when it is released after the campaign ends. Unlike many conventions that host a simulator, ours does not cost extra. It's all included in your badge—though we won't be upset if you give them a donation or purchase some of their wares in exchange for their presence at AcadeCon. 

Sponsored by  Double Exposure, the Envoy program is unique and awesome! The Double Exposure team will provide us with about 25 brand-new games that you can try out during AcadeCon. Every time you play a demo, you are entered into a drawing to win that game! You can play the same game multiple times to get a better chance at winning something you really enjoy or play them all and see if Lady Luck is smiling on you.

Open Game Library:

All badge holders are able to check out any of our game library games free of charge (with ID) during our regular event hours. To see a current list of all the games we have CLICK HERE. Don't see your favorite?  donate a copy to us or increase your pledge level by enough to cover the price and and we'll buy a copy to add in.  At worst, shoot us a msg that you'd like to see that game added and we'll see if we can get a copy before this year's event.

Code of Conduct & Terms of Service.

AcadeCon is an inclusive gaming event open to gamers of all types. Every attendee will be subject to our Code of Conduct and Terms of Service.

Further - all attendees agree to abide by our terms of service. This is to ensure every attendee feels welcome. Stretch goals:

Based on last year, we may have rented out more space in the DCC than we needed and wasted space made us less profitable.  For this year we're going to step back and bit and our initial goal is to raise enough money for room 101, the larger main gaming room.  At $13,700.00 we can rent that space and pay for all the miscellaneous things that go along with it.

After the initial goal we'll be using additional funds to rent out the side rooms which we used for Panels, Seminars, and Entertainment events.  Each increment of $300 will allow us to rent one of these rooms for one day.

More stretch goals . . .  if we manage to get enough funds to rent all the space we would want or need  we will find a way to use those funds to improve the overall experience.  

ADD ONs

Kickstarter exclusive T-shirts.  While we will have a few T-shirts for sale during the event it helps us to know what people want and what sizes they need. If you'd like to pre-order a T-shirt that is only available through the Kickstarter you can add either $18 or $20 (for sizes XXL and XXXL). We'll reach out before the order to ask your size and preferred cut.

AcadeCon 2019 D6+1's.  Each of our guests received one of our commemorative D6's each year. If you'd like to add on 3 more to get a full set of 4 please add $2.00 to your pledge. If you'd like even more, add $1.00 per die you'd like added. Please contact us via the KS messaging system to let us know what your over pledge is for.

AcadeCon 2019 Token chip. Currently our VIP guests get 5 of our yearly poker chip tokens and we sell them during the event. If you'd like to pre-order them we can provide them at a discount vs the for-sale price.  For each chip you'd like, please add $1.00 to your pledge. Please contact us via the KS messaging system to let us know what your over pledge is for.

Risks and challenges

At this point, the biggest risk is that we don't fund, in which case the event does not happen. If we can't make it to our minimal funding we can't afford to put on the show. As long as we fund, only a catastrophe would stop the event from happening.

Beyond that, we are having the event in southern Ohio in November. We can't control the weather so there may be a chance that people coming from out of town may have difficulty getting there or back. We are not responsible for any travel arrangements, costs, or difficulties.

This is our 7th year running AcadeCon and 5th as a public event. We know we can put on a fun show if we have enough people that are willing to join us.

    Our AcadeCon Game Library is a popular and well used part of what makes AcadeCon AcadeCon, but mostly the game library is the personal games of the Faculty. And while we have made an effort to buy new games to fill out the library we still have need for more. At this level you are donating an amount of money to cover the purchase of a specific game for our library. It can be one we desperately need or maybe one of your favorites that you want to share. In exchange for this donation we will affix a donation label inside the game's case/cover/lid stating that the game was donated by you and will include a short personal msg as well, if you wish.

Those events can be almost anything, but there are a few requirements. 2 player games do not count. Most table events need to seat at least 3 players (beyond yourself as the GM) and run at least 2 hours. If the event is a panel or seminar then it only needs to run 45 minutes or longer.

    This pledge level is for game designers looking to show off their newest designs and or conduct alpha/beta play-testing. For your pledge you'll be assigned a table that is yours for the entire weekend. You can schedule events or do walk up and play times or a mixture of both.

    You may sell or pre-sell any of the items you are demoing from your table, but if you wish to sell any additional merchandise you'll need to get a vendor table.

    The standard Demo table is a 5' round table but you may request an oversized table (which is two 8'x2.5' tables together to make a rectangular table).

If you'd like more than one space you can over pledge $65 for each additional space.     This pledge is for any one of the 5 corner booths available. (there are 6, but see below for that one). These vendor spaces are larger than the in-line ones and cost $10 more. Instead of the 8'x7' In line, these spaces are 12' x 7' and come with two tables (if you want/need them) which would be an L shape if you use them.

    AcadeCon is growing. This will be our 7th Acadecon, each having grown significantly over the last and we are expecting the same for this year.

    As we grow, so does our need for more space for more gaming, panels, special events, etc. But those extra side rooms add up quick. Each of the side rooms we've rented in the past cost approx. $200 per day of use.

    At this level you are covering the cost of one of those rooms per day (200 for each day). If you cover a room we will make a sign with your name/info as a way to identify the room. If you cover a room for two or more days (so $400+) we'll print up a banner for the room with your name/logo.
