Who are The Roddenberries?
The Roddenberries are the galaxy’s premiere Star Trekkified, multi-media sci-fi rock cabaret. Forged in Philadelphia in 2012 to boldly go where no Star Band has gone before, this 9-piece troupe is comprised of professional musicians, cabaret performers, film makers, dancers and educators, and is a unique spectacle to behold.
Our members have come together through a united love of Star Trek and the ideals set forth by Gene Roddenberry - so much so that we named ourselves after him! Both intellectually and creatively, we were all "members" before the band even formed. When we started our musical mission, we knew we loved the music of Star Trek and wanted to form a band celebrating that. We weren't sure what that would entail at the time, but we also definitely wanted to be a band that WE wanted to see, and that both uber-nerds and lay people alike could enjoy.
The Roddenberries have since organically morphed into the Star Trekkified, Sci-Fi Multi-Media Rock Cabaret Spectacle that it is, and our shows span the realms of Star Trek, Star Wars, science fiction, fantasy, gaming, Dr. Who, Marvel and DC in an effort to unite and entertain fans of all things nerdy. From artful recreations of original movie and tv scores, to parodies ranging from rock and roll, hip-hop and pop to classics; from Queen to A.C. Jobim, Prince to Sinatra, The Jackson 5 to Monster Magnet and so many more. The Roddenberries are a unique culmination of rock-n-roll theater, comedy, and pure sci-fi awesomeness!
We have had the honor of performing at multiple venues and events around the country, most notably for Roddenberry Entertainment on The Roddenberry Stage for three nights at the 2016 Star Trek Las Vegas Official 50 Year Anniversary Convention, where C-NET.com called us "(One of) 20 out-of-this-world moments from the Star Trek anniversary convention." Later that month, we also appeared on Philadelphia Fox 29 Live to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, and have played at the Franklin Institute’s Fels Planetarium, the Penn Museum, the New York Comic Con, and the Philadelphia Wizard World/Comic Con (where we opened for George Takei's documentary 'To Be Takei’). We've also been a Philadelphia Geek Award nominee for "Makers of the Year."
Our love of the collective universe of the Nerd-O-Sphere has compelled us to create a catalog of over 100 songs; many being parodies of popular tunes. In 2014, we set out to record and self-produce our debut, self-titled album for release in 2015, for which we created these 12 Trekkified tracks:
- Spock's Hand
- Inner Light
- Gonna Live Not Die
- Green Girl From Orion
- Lounge Trek
- That's Space
- Funeral For a Vulcan
- Terok N'Or
- Cantina Band Medley
And yet the universe is vast and filled with infinite diversities in infinite combinations, thus creating endless possibilities; so we constantly strive to boldly create new parodies and unique arrangements to titillate both Nerds and Non-Nerds alike. This primal drive has compelled us to create a whole new series of songs - many of which were constructed in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Star Trek: TNG - and record them for the fans to enjoy in their homes, offices, shuttlecrafts, and beyond.
And so, herein we arrive at Kickstarter...
#1: Album II - Eat The Roddenberries
We are currently working on our second album, "Eat The Roddenberries," with bold new parodies and original compositions created specifically for the fans. We have the honor of working with multiple Grammy award-winner Joe "The Butcher" Nicolo to professionally record, engineer, mix and master our second album, and in order to fully achieve this we need your support!
The album will incorporate a slew of these freshly minted new parody/homage tunes, as well as some fan favorites from shows. These are the 12 tracks we plan to include:
- At Tanagra
- Talking 'Bout Next Generation
- Riker's Kiss
- Angry Like The Worf
- More Than Just a Machine
- She's That Lady
- What I Like About Q
- Dr. Who, Are You?
- Space Cowgirl
#2: The Music Video For "2265"
If you're like us, you've been slightly confused about the timeline that is the Star Trek universe - from all of the series, to the movies, to the Kelvin reconfiguration, and beyond. We wanted to get a song together to neatly wrap and present the timeline to everyone (which we believe we have), and follow it up with a music video representing all things Star Trek. With puppets. That's why we’ve chosen "2265", one of our favorites from the new album, for the video.
We have a surplus of videos from live performances spanning our 5 1/2 year arc thus far, but we're ready to conquer our very first professionally, studio-shot music video! We're so confident that it is going to be amazing, and we can't wait to see the finished product and share it with the world!
We're working with the amazing and SUPER fun Monkey Boys Productions to create this one-of-a-kind video, and pre-production is already underway!
Our expenses will include, but are not limited to:
- Recording/Mixing/Mastering/Producing the songs
- Hiring additional session musicians
- Album art
- Album duplication
- Licensing & distribution costs
- Various Music video production expenses, including studio time, set materials, videography, lighting, etc.
- Kickstarter Payment processing fees
- Perk Merchandise/shipping fees
- Additional costuming
Our Stellar Perks
We're still finalizing the Limited Edition Kickstarter T-Shirt design, and the Eat The Roddenberries album cover, but we promise we'll share as soon as they're beamed in!
If we are fortunate enough to surpass our initial Kickstarter goal of $9500, every single penny of the money we raise will go to fund and see our Stretch Goals to completion, and beyond. And we are quite strongly determined to see our creative goals through to completion and ultimately pass along the fruits of our labors to our supporters and fans. Here’s a look at what we’re looking to achieve, above and beyond:
Stretch Goal #1: More songs on the album - $4000
We’ve whittled down the total content of our album to be an achievable goal of 12 songs. If we surpass our goal, the first thing we're looking to do is include these 4 more songs on the album:
- Sci-Fi Disco Medley
- Space Lord Vader
- White Wizard
- Life Forms
Stretch Goal #2: "Riker's Kiss" 2nd Music Video - $2000
Oh, that sexy, bearded devil. We set out to create an homage to William Riker, and follow it up with an even sexier, gender-bender of a music video - complete with a cast and story line, special effects, and a big fat dance party at the end to celebrate the Nerd-O-Sphere in style - hopefully with help from our supporters to be included in the shoot! He's your answer to Kirk for TNG, Starfleet's Cassanova in the galaxy; and he's got a little unexpected surprise for you in this video! This one has already being conceived and is in pre-production by the highly skilled and savvy folks at PARADIGital FilMs; and if we surpass our goal it could help us to complete, and be able to fully share, this vision of our 2nd video.
Anything we are able to make over and above our stretch goals will be used towards a wide range of well-needed musical, audio and video gear & equipment for the band, touring expenses, expanding our merchandise, and beyond. Absolutely everything will be constructively utilized - it is only logical.
Thank you so much for taking the time to look at our campaign! Please check out our perks to share in the fruits of our labors that you could personally help us grow, and consider either donating or sharing our campaign with other fabulous, like-minded people like yourself. We'll be posting lots of updates along the way, and adding more fabulous perks, so check back and see what space seed has sprouted!
We look forward to making magic happen with you by our side. Peace and long life to you!
Risks and challenges
We've been working very hard to towards accomplishing all of these goals we've enthusiastically set forth, and our diligence has been focused and unyielding. As these projects are multi-tiered and pricey to complete, there are certain risks and challenges in place which we are confident we will overcome - especially with your help!
Our consequential challenges lie within these direct and peripheral goals:
- Producing and representing ALL of the new material we feel is relevant to this new album and should be included, especially because it was specifically crafted for our fans.
- Reaching our stretch goals in order to fully bring our creative vision to life, and share.
- Having all of the resources necessary to reach our physical production deadline in order to bring our final products with us to this year's STLV Convention in August.
We're looking to have this campaign fund around 60% of our total estimated projected costs. We've already personally invested the initial funds necessary to begin these projects, and we'll keep working hard to secure the remaining funds necessary, from various live performances and other avenues. We have already booked studio time to record, the videos are in pre-production, and all of the leg work is done. We're ready to start - we just need your support to be able to finish!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
