I was lucky enough to grow up here, in the south west of Ireland...
Perfect for camping - so I did, a lot.
Although I loved to camp, something used to really annoy me about my various tents. Once the temperature dropped outside they immediately became like ice boxes inside. The opposite was also true. Once the sun hit them directly they were like saunas inside. And whenever I camped in a large campsites, I might as well have invited everyone in, as there was no acoustic barrier between us and the outside world.
We at Thermo Tents have essentially married brand new and innovative insulation technology with our new multi layer tent design, and Thermo Tent is the result. It is the world's first (correctly) thermally and acoustically insulated tent. We have managed to overcome issues like bulk and condensation risk, and we have come up with a top quality, mobile tent that will introduce you to a new level of Comfort, Outdoors...
Quality is the word that describes every aspect of Thermo Tent, with its fully insulated sleeping quarters which is divided into two bedrooms. Our tent exceeds all industry design standards (ISO 5912).
We invite you to experience the most comfortable night’s sleep that you will ever in a tent. And remember, the bedrooms are acoustically insulated as well. Our bright spacious living area is equipped with side windows as well as front and side doors & a porch with cover sheet, and you have the peace of mind that comes with a strong steel pole structure.
Add to that the quality of fabric and workmanship that goes into EVERY aspect of EVERY Thermo Tent and you get Quality. Guaranteed.
We have worked our way through 5 prototypes to achieve our final designs.
We have now nailed down the final design of Thermo Tent 6.
Pat Falvey is an Irish adventurer and mountaineer who has led expeditions to many parts of the world, including Everest, Antarctica, Greenland and West Papua New Guinea. He has twice been to each of the highest peaks on the seven continents.
We received a huge boost when world renowned explorer Pat Falvey asked to come on board as a technical advisor after he saw the Tent. Pat has publicly endorsed Thermo Tent. This is a huge vote of confidence.
A bit about Pat's life...
- Flysheets - Poly-cotton (65%35%) / Polyester with Ripstop, 7,000 mm HH.
- Groundsheet (Sewn In) – 210D strong Oxford, 10,000 mm HH.
- Poles - HT Steel, 12mm and Fibreglass for inner tent.
- Inner Tent – 2 layers of extra breathable Poly-cotton come together to sandwich our special TTinsulate breathable insulation which boasts very low thermal conductivity and a high density.
- Fire Retardant – All of our materials are FR, and exceed ISO EN 5912 (2011) standards.
- Pegs – Our plastic pegs are the most durable in the marketplace and they won’t turn in windy conditions as some other products do.

We have also developed a special product range to aid Disaster Relief.
The problems described above are uncomfortable for us occasional campers. Imagine having to deal with them day after day, month after month, year after year, while you wait for a new home. Disaster relief is an area in which we have a particular interest, having seen at first hand the conditions in which these unfortunate people have to live, often in extreme climates. We at Thermo Tents have satisfied the need for an insulated Disaster Relief tent by designing a special product, which is suitable for such situations.
Obviously, Thermo Tent has to stand on its own two feet financially, but we are very committed to helping these less fortunate people along the way. That's what makes it all worthwhile.
Founder and CEO Derek O'Sullivan (BTech, HDip) has married his own technical background with his love of the outdoors, to develop Thermo Tent. Indeed, it was his own experience of being too uncomfortable while camping that led to the origin of Thermo Tent.
Our Home: The Tom Crean Business Centre, Kerry Technology Park, Tralee, Co. Kerry, Ireland.
Now we have the finished tents, we have the routes to market and we have the approved suppliers. Next we will:
- Finish our e-Commerce website
- Grow the team
- Increase brand awareness
- Complete production and show tents off to the world in May 2015
That's where we need your help. We need you to be the link that actually gets us into campsites this year. So please be an important part of the Thermo Tent team. Please be that link...
Risks and challenges
Yes, unfortunately there will be some risks and challenges for us to overcome. There always are!
The main ones are:
Competition - nobody makes a correctly insulated tent, and we will.
New brand to the market - We are building brand awareness every single day.
Getting more routes to market - Derek is on the ground meeting people every week.
Quality control - This is Tom Teo's department and he has 20 years' experience. We have also partnered up with THE MOST REPUTABLE tent manufacturer in the world.
Bulk for transport - We have designed a vacuum system which allows us to reduce the volume of the insulated tent.
Condensation - Optimum ventilation design and testing along with high quality breathable materials minimises this risk.
Funding - Our own investment, along with help from the Irish Enterprise Board (Enterprise Ireland) and the Kickstarter community.
The Thermo Tent team is managing to overcome all of these obstacles through expansion and continuous development. We are adapting to change.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
