A world first gaming system using resistance to deliver an immersive physical experience.
About this project
Realm uses resistance to measure energy expenditure/force. This system can revolutionise the way games are played, delivering an immersive 'feeling is believing' experience.
New Development for The REALM SYSTEM:
While attending the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco several new opportunities developed for The Realm System. Our ultimate goal is to use The Realm System technology to help improve the health and fitness of as many people as possible while playing screen based games and applications. And we believe that these new opportunities can help in expediting that goal. Thank you very much to all of our supporters, we very much appreciate you all taking the time to discover and support our tech… we will update you all in the coming months with developments including when the technology will become available for developers and consumers. Thank you also to the amazing support from journalists and media organisations. Your interest in the technology and recognition of its potential to improve a user's health, fitness, fun and immersion has been invaluable in helping us get to where we are.
Thank you,

For the first time ever a player's energy expenditure can be a factor in how games are played. BTW... the system also delivers real health and fitness benefits.
As Featured In
- "It's never occurred to me until this very second, that maybe the problem with motion control gaming is the lack of resistance."
- "The more I think about it the more it makes sense. The best games in terms of control and feel, have a great feeling of resistance and weight in the controls. The Realm System uses resistance bands alongside unique technology to provide that feeling of weight. It's also compatible on the Oculus Rift, which makes perfect sense."
- "... I'm more excited about the possibilities if entire teams of developers get their hands on the tech."
Mark Serrels, KOTAKU - "Imagine playing Assassins Creed!"
Dan Ackerman, CBS
- "I'm excited about Realm. I'd love to see developers jump on board in the same way they did with Oculus; if Realm can truly gamify fitness, that's going to be ground breaking."
Alex Choros, CYBERSHACK
-
“Manipulating the game world with force is something we haven’t seen before. The potential applications are really fascinating.”
Dan Golding, Gaming & Technology Journalist -
“Best Zombie killing experience ever”
Michael Kordahi, Principal Evangelist Microsoft Australia “The use cases of the The Realm are virtually limitless... Many have attempted to make gaming more life-like... But none have taken advantage of resistance to make game play, feel physically real.”
Jason Lim, Forbes-
“This system can potentially help solve the problems of obesity and diabetes. It’s a powerful way of improving the health and well-being of people.”
Professor Iain Spears, Teesside University, UK
Feeling is Believing
The loading of muscles as you wield a sword, the weight in your arms as you hold up your rifle, the explosion of power as you throw a punch. Realm turns imagination into a physical experience. Realm’s ergonomic handheld IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units) precisely track hand and body movements, accurately measuring the positions, speed and direction of those movements. Combined with resistance and using a unique algorithm, the patented system delivers incredibly accurate biometric information such as force, power and energy expenditure (calories burnt).
There’s no cheating the system – it tracks your muscles through full range of movement and gives immediate and precise feedback on just how hard you’re working.
Virtual Reality
As shown at the Sydney VR Meetup
Paired with virtual reality headsets, Realm can add a whole new level of realism to the users experience, and allows the players to see and feel their hands and bodies…opening another world of possibilities. The system is compatible with Oculus Rift.

An SDK for Unlimited Possibilities
Our SDK is compatible with Unity3D. An integration package is provided within the developer kit to quickly and easily start building applications using the Realm System.
Our SDK is cross-platform, compatible with Mac OSX, Linux and PC. The system works using the Kinect camera and can also work with Extreme Reality software enabling any webcam to track the bodies motion.
What this Kickstarter will help with
Whether you’re a developer that wants to design the next game that could help tackle childhood obesity, slay dragons with the weight of a real sword, mod existing games or try out our multiplayer boxing game (guaranteed workout without the broken nose) none of it will be possible without your support. All of the money raised will go directly to the production costs of kits.
The Team
Matt Long
Matt is the founder/owner of Goodoil Films started in 2002, which has become one of the world’s leading commercial production companies. In 2010 Matt combined his talents in film with his passion for fitness and health writing and directing the highly acclaimed Running to America documentary which follows 4 young Indigenous Australians as they train for the New York Marathon. The documentary was also the basis for the ongoing Indigenous Marathon Project, which continues to train and inspire young Indigenous people from remote communities.
The Realm project came about after Matt helped his brother in law who is a co-inventor of the system with some marketing advice… “I’ve always been interested in fitness and health and I’d been across the development process of the technology with my brother in law Paul who is a professional trainer and who designed the resistance device, he collaborated with Teeside University in the UK and Professor Ian Spears who wanted to create something that could be used as a health intervention for people who’d most likely never get to a gym. The more I talked to Paul about the technology the more I was sure that this was a way to revolutionize the gaming industry.”
Pierre Lagedec
“I am fascinated with the use of motion capture technologies to understand the beautiful mechanics of the human body. More specifically, I like to combine my passion for sports with my skills in computing through my research in the area of exergaming. My goal with the Realm System is to push the limits of exergaming and change our human-computer interaction habits while promoting a healthier lifestyle, and to make it accessible to most.”
Production Timeline
Production of the developer/player kits is planned to begin in April 2015, with the first kits delivered to pledgers by September 2015.

Risks and challenges
Manufacturing and Components
The product has been developed over a 5 year period with in depth testing on all components including medical grade rubber and first class componentry. We have a very strong relationship with our manufacturers in China who are world renowned for the products that come out of their plant, including a less than 1% return rate on their products which is exceptional by any standards.
Shipping & Delivery
We’re committed to meeting our September 2015 delivery date. We are working with a world class shipping provider to ensure that all rewards - including development kits- arrive to backers safely and efficiently.
SDK Development
Delivering a robust SDK is crucial. We are aware of the technical challenges involved in designing a development kit that is reliable, efficient, and flexible. More than 5 years of experience with the technology have informed the development of our SDK, and it will provide you with the tools you need to discover Realm’s potential.
Developer & Programmer Support
We will be standing side-by-side with our developers and programmers. Co-inventor of the Realm system, Pierre Lagadec, will be available online. We will also be introducing a forum, so that we can work together and build a strong community of Realm developers.
