Cruising down the streets of San Diego is the city's only all-women's car club The Unique Ladies. Help us cruise into film festivals and share the story of the car club that could with 20k in 30 days!
ABOUT THE FILM
Cruising low and slow through the streets of Chicano San Diego is the city's only all women's car club, the Unique Ladies. Members Pat and Sherry turn heads with their show stopping vehicles, and cause a stir by challenging the gender norm: where men rule the road and women take the sidelines. Although it's been a constant struggle to keep their club alive, they've managed to make it to their fifth year. Now the ladies want to take it a step further and expand the club, inviting another lady lowrider to their club, Linda. Their progress encounters a few bumps on the road as the lowrider scene in still resistant to women taking the driver's seat.
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
The Unique Ladies is the first documentary of it's kind to give an intimate peek into the cruising life of lowriders with a twist. It's all through the eyes of women. Women's participation has long been ignored, but these ladies are ready to show off their ranflas (cars) and take home the winning trophy from the competitive shows. Other documentaries on lowrider culture have focused on the sport through a male perpective. We have a chance to share lowrider culture through a wonderful character driven story.
CURRENT STATUS AND TIMELINE
TIMING IS EVERYTHING!! The Unique Ladies is at a fine-cut stage (near finished stage for non film folk) and runs at 27 minutes. The financing through this kickstarter campaign will finance essential post-production needs listed below. At the end of this kickstarter campaign we will have a quick turnaround to get the documentary ready for top festivals including; Full Frame, South By Southwest (SXSW), Slamdance and The San Diego Latino Film Festival, to name a few. Screenings will commence in early 2013 and, ideally, The Unique Ladies will screen throughout the U.S. and internationally.
WHY WE NEED HELP & HOW IT WORKS
Through fundraising and credit cards, we have secured 70% of our budget. The success of this campaign will allow The Unique Ladies to screen nationally and internationally and onward toward television broadcast and distribution. A large portion of our fundraising goes into the music scoring for the film, through the help of Grammy nominated producer Greg Landau, we have a chance to create a soundtrack that will eliminate the red tape of licensing existing music for screenings or distribution which can be as costly as $50,000 per song!
Kickstarter is an all or nothing deal. We have 30 Days to reach our goal, your contribution will not be deducted from your account until the end date. That means you don't have to worry about having money to back up your pledge until the end of the campaign. If we don't reach our goal, we get $0 and you will not be charged. We are hoping to reach our goal and beyond; the more we receive above our request helps us pay off Kickstarter and Amazon fees, giving more funds for the documentary itself.

Risks and challenges
This documentary has had a very protracted timeline, as most documentaries do, but we are nearing the finish line. What is most essential now, is building community support and collaboration in order to ensure completion and to obtain a wide audience. The rewards will have no trouble with being delivered by the expected date with the exception for the digital download and/or DVD which may incur a 1-2 month delay as we complete the musical composition and packaging. We are intent on a premiere screening as early as March of 2013, and if delays occur with any of the post-production attributes we will premiere as late as summer 2013. After successful campaign with this kickstarter we will still need at least $7,500 to finish off the music composition and scoring. This is being addressed with multiple grant application submissions.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
