Starting back in March, The Pennies got the idea that we had a few good tunes that we'd written, and so we got into the studio and layed down some basic tracks. Well, once we did that for those first four songs, we figured, why not finish a whole record? Which brings us to today. The Pennies have recorded basic tracks for practically a whole album, and have discovered that we need a little assistance to get the album to the finish line, which is where Kickstarter and YOU come in.
But wait! Maybe you're saying "If they already recorded a whole album, what on earth is there left to do?" It seems simple, I know, but there's a whole lot of other stuff that has to happen before that shiny disc can get gobbled up by your car's stereo, or digitally imprinted onto your phone's music iBrary. Want to know what they all are?
Step 1: Basic Tracks - this is what we've pretty much accomplished. We've gone into Bluetone Studio a few times and recorded our singing, playing and joke-telling into microphones and a computer. We have a few more harmonies and guitar solos to record, but it's getting close. Believe it or not, that's the easy part!
Step 2: Mixing the Album - Once an album is recorded, the sounds are good individually, but they need help blending together within each song. After we finish recording, we'll take the songs to a professional mixer here in Somerville to blend the harmonies, bring forward Caroline's lead vocals, highlight Tom's wailing guitar solos, and give you the full landscape of Dave's elegant bass playing. The audio in the video, for example, is UNMIXED, so things might not sound JUST RIGHT. We need your help to perfect it!
Step 3: Mastering the Album - At this point, each song will sound great, but together won't quite feel like a complete collection. Maybe they'll sound better on a home speaker system as opposed to a pair of headphones. Mastering fixes this, and helps the whole album work, with similar volumes (so your ears don't get blasted on a loud song after turning the volume up on a quiet song). This is actually one of the most mysterious aspects of the whole process, but it makes all the difference!
We've already started meeting with our graphic designer Paul Carroll to get the cover and packaging looking just right, and then sending everything off to the printer to get our completed albums in time for this autumn!
We're not asking for a handout. We hope you will be interested in pre-ordering our new record, or maybe booking a show with us sometime in the upcoming months. We love playing, and can't wait to do it some more! So take a look at our "rewards", and think about helping us out. We have a lot of fun making this music, and hope you like the new sounds. Here's a look at the two bags on offer by Abigail M Designs ($100 or more):
As a reward for reading this whole thing, please enjoy this baby dancing to The Pennies "Devil Song" from our last record, A Broken Heart is a Beautiful Thing (click link to hear "Devil Song" and the rest of the record).
