What’s it like inside the world of public restroom signs? Aside from the fact that the symbols are on the job 24/7, dutifully directing humans, is there more to their straight and narrow life? Can an icon of this nature have an adventure and discover solutions to obstacles outside of it’s boxed-in environment? Enter the world of The Pedestrian and find out!
The Pedestrian is a 2.5D side-scrolling puzzle platformer that takes puzzle platforming literally. The player moves from sign to sign, rearranging and reconnecting signs in order to solve puzzles. These solved puzzles connect and occupy space in the 3D surroundings. This allows the player the ability to explore and maneuver smoothly through the terrain.
Plan, build, adjust, succeed! The task is simple: get from point A to point B. But as the saying goes, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.” Connect signs to create a path to the next leg of your journey. Not only are puzzle mechanics tied to the world, but also to the narrative. Use your imagination and puzzle-solving skills to avoid and overcome obstacles in the signs.
The world of The Pedestrian is a lively place. It's home to such sights as: traffic cluttered streets, steaming pipes, music filled elevators, suspiciously abandoned subways, a dark stormy city skyline and more. The environments are meant to be entertaining, as well as a core part of the gameplay.
No more walls of text! All puzzle mechanics are taught using symbols and animation, while story elements are portrayed during gameplay. The real-world public sign system was created to give information without the use of text, eliminating the barrier of language. Thus, The Pedestrian uses simplistic sign-style symbols in order to convey needed information for gameplay.
The Pedestrian uses no words, so music is a critical component in telling the story. A well crafted, cohesive score speaks louder than words.
Classic jazz is The Pedestrian's base genre, with inspiration from John Williams, Danny Elfman, and Jerry Goldsmith, to evoke the feeling of a bright and bustling world.

Skookum Arts is a three-man team based in north central Ohio.
We are Daniel and Jed Lackey and Joel Hornsby. We grew up as neighbors in a small village. As kids, we were all homeschooled and shared similar interests, such as; the usual childhood biking, swimming, sports and lots of video games at each other’s homes. In addition to these normal activities, we enjoyed exploring abandoned buildings in the nearby countryside, creating fun science-type projects...like potato cannons and a forge to melt down and remold aluminum. Our combined passion to discover, design and construct, developed into a desire to start a business in order to create the type of products we enjoy and share them with the world.
In 2014, we decided to focus on game development and began production of The Pedestrian.
Risks and challenges
One of the biggest challenges in any creative pursuit is to find a unique and compelling concept that not only draws peoples attention, but also leaves them wanting more. We believe The Pedestrian has already cleared this hurdle and we are now nearing the home stretch in production.
The Pedestrian has been a self-funded endeavor until now. We each had full time jobs when our business began and a few freelance projects also helped with start-up. Our families have been very supportive and contributed financially in order for us to terminate employment and target all our energy on The Pedestrian. We have been able to manage financially, but the well is running dry.
So our dilemma is to either ship the game "as is" or consider other means to finance it's continued development. We could take additional freelance work and possibly have part time jobs, but we would have less time to devote to the game, and thus further delay the launch. Kickstarter is a way for us to fund the project of The Pedestrian, so we can give it the laser beam focus and polish we desire.
Our demo shows the level of commitment and care we are putting into the game, along with the fun art style and unique set of puzzle-platformer mechanics. We're striving to elevate the game to a truly cinematic, singular experience and we need your help to do it!
That being said, we want to be completely transparent about the possible risks involved. We have done research, worked really hard and received a lot of positive feedback, but we are aware that no one is guaranteed success. It could take longer than expected to release, because we absolutely refuse to offer a product with quality less than the excellence we believe can be achieved.
We are 100% committed to this game and unless some unforeseen tragedy occurs...like the internet becomes nonexistent or we all die...we will complete and release The Pedestrian as soon as possible. We have already received the "Greenlight" from Steam and have everything set in place to release when the product is finished.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
