Hello, we are The Often Herd! Thanks for taking the time to check out our Kickstarter page. The band consists of Rupert Hughes (guitar & vocals), Evan Davies (mandolin & vocals), Niles Krieger (fiddle & vocals) and Sam Quintana (double bass). We're a bluegrass band from Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. We write and perform our own brand of original material, influenced by the wistful sunshine harmonies of Southern California and the striking industrial allure of our North Eastern home. We launched this band toward the end of this summer but together have many years of collective gigging experience. Over the last two years we have developed a sound that we're really proud of and are now ready to share it with YOU!
Our Debut EP
This August, we went into the studio to record what we feel is the very best of our new material. This includes three original songs, two traditional pieces and our own arrangement of a Bob Dylan song. We recorded at Blast Recording Studio in Newcastle with engineer Adam Sinclair (The Unthanks, New York Dolls) who has recorded us previously and did an excellent job. With this EP we really wanted to create a product we’re proud of and to reach as many people as possible.
Before we hit the studio we saved up for a few months and spent our own money on the initial stages. This included £410 for studio hire, £200 for sound engineer hire and £300 on mixing.
To be able to fund the remaining production and the release of our EP we need your help raising £3600. This can be broken down into:
CD duplication: £1000
Artwork, photos and design: £950
Music video for one of the tracks: £300
PR, publicity and media: £1000
If you would just like to pre-order our new EP you can do just that! However, if you think you can donate a little more then in return for your generosity we have a number of exciting rewards on offer. These range from stickers, badges and coasters to t-shirts and artwork prints, all the way to a liner notes credit, personalised videos or a house concert next year!
Risks and challenges
Since we have already recorded our music, the rest of our work towards this release is about research and making decisions. We have based our budget on direct quotes for mastering, CD duplication, artwork and photos, music video production and PR and have started reaching out to artists and professionals we would like to work with in these areas.
The main challenge for us will be making sure everything is completed in time to release. That's why we're currently working hard on setting up connections so everything is ready to go once we finish the campaign. We have set our release date to be in March 2018. This gives us two months to complete work on the physical CD package and two months to publicise our release leading up to its launch and to get your Kickstarter rewards on their way to you!
We decided 6 months ago that we would launch a Kickstarter campaign to partly fund this new EP and now that we're here, we're so excited to be a step closer to sharing our new music with the world!
We have worked really hard to get this far and now we need your help. We would be honoured if you would help make this project a reality. Every pound makes a difference towards this campaign and any additional money we raise will help us spread the word even more. Even if you aren't able to contribute you can help us by sharing our campaign with your friends, family and coworkers on social media.
We are confident that with all the love and support from our friends, family and community we can make this campaign a success!
Thanks for taking the time to check out our Kickstarter campaign.
Rupert, Evan, Niles and Sam.
