The Ocean Hours: Swim for the Surface

Hi There!

We are The Ocean Hours!  We are a band from Connecticut that has been playing music together for the last decade. We recently recorded collection of songs about being (or feeling) far from loved ones; its called "The Distance EP", and over the course of this Kickstarter we will be releasing the songs on YouTube, Spotify, etc! Have a listen; the first song is already out:

And here's our website.

Swim for the Surface

Over the last year, we have been crafting our debut album: "Swim for the Surface". These nine songs tell the story of our experiences and our search for peace in the ever-increasing chaos surrounding our 21st century lives.

The Band

  • Nick: middle brother and Sarah's husband;  he writes, sings, and plays keys and guitar.
  • Sarah: married to Nick; she sings, writes, and plays bass.
  • Chris: oldest brother; he plays guitar better, engineers, and mixes our sound.
  • Justin: youngest brother; he plays drums and percussion.

Where We Are Now

We have written and done rough recordings of all 9 songs for the album. We paid for production help from Dave Elkins of Schematic Studios for two songs this past December. It was an eye opening experience, and we want to keep working with him for as much of this album as possible.

In the meantime, although we all live far away from each other, we have found creative ways to work together remotely. We use a program called Splice to sync our recording projects, and we regularly chat about our ideas and arrangements. Sarah and Nick do lots of vocal work and synth stuff out of the Facepalm Lounge (their guest bedroom) in Ireland, while Chris mixes and records guitar from The Marshall Studio (his garage) in Phoenix, AZ. The Community Coffeehouse in Danbury, CT also graciously allowed us to record Justin's drums for some of the songs over the 2018 Christmas holiday.

The Plan

We want to travel back to work with Dave on more of Swim for the Surface. Because we are all in different parts of the world, we have to budget for travel and lodging in addition to production costs and studio time. We are asking for $2,500, which will allow Nick and Sarah to work with Dave at Schematic Studios for vocal production (and cover our travel costs, lodging, Kickstarter fees, and your rewards).

That said, we have some stretch goals!

  •  GOAL B $4,000: the whole band gets to travel to work on another whole track start to finish at Schematic Studios. We can print CD booklets to accompany the album as well.
  •  GOAL C $5,500: additional production time, we would get to work with with string players and work with a mastering engineer! We would get to print CD booklets and make physical EPs for everyone getting the EP/LP bundle.

We have the gear we need to record guitar, keys, background vocals, and some lead vocals remotely from our different parts of the world. We want to record at Schematic because Dave's skills as a producer would help us realize the songs' full potential, and his expertise recording vocals and drums would help the songs really pop. There's also that extra sparkle that comes from improvisation in an intentionally creative space.

We need you!

We really would appreciate your support; we believe these songs will be a blessing to people, and we are excited to invite you into this process of sharing them.

FAQs:

Q.  Why don't you record the entire album at home?

A.  We will be doing as much of the recording from home as possible. However, having outside ears from an experienced producer reveals areas to be improved that we miss on our own.

Q.  What are you doing to keep travel costs down?

A.  Nick and Sarah are traveling from Ireland on the cheapest airline, which doesn't fly anywhere near Nashville. Chris, Nick, and Justin's parents (in CT) are generously letting us borrow their minivan, so we can save lots of money flying there and driving vs flying directly to Nashville.

Q. What are your plans after the album is released?

A.  As we are split over two continents, we are planning tentative Euro and US tours for later 2019; if you want us to come to your city, please shoot us a message!

Q. What an incredible photo!

Right!? It is the work of landscape photographer Maura Tilbury; check out more of her work here!

Risks and challenges

Because we all are living so far away from one another, we have to overcome the difficulties of recording remotely. That said, we have learned a lot over the last few months producing the Distance EP, and are well equipped to make this record.
