WHO THE HELL ARE YOU AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
I'm an Australian expat living in NYC and in May I'm going to ride my bike, Precious, across these great United States following the TransAmerica trail. It’s called a trail, but really it’s a route that follows normal roads starting in Yorktown. Virginia, and finishing in Astoria, Oregon (or vice versa). It is 4,262 miles long. My legs are ready.
Because it sounds awesome! But also because I want to write a book about the adventure, one that I hope has a chance of getting published. Without actually doing the trip, I can’t tell you what it’s going to be about, but I'm pretty sure one of the main themes is going to be fear. Why? Because although the thought of doing this trip excites my heart, it also makes me pee my pants a little bit. As well as tackling this fear, I'd like to explore a statement that I've heard several times from Americans when I tell them I live in NYC.
That statement is: “Oh, you don’t live in America!”
I find this part offensive, and part huh? So I'd like to find out if it's true or not.
WHERE DO WE COME IN?
To help me pitch the idea of my book to publishers, I'd like to make a mini-book of the trip. A taster, if you like, which will include 4-5 stories from the road. These will essentially be drafts from the final book, but I'm gonna tart it up with photographs and offer it as a reward to backers. Either in a physical form, or digital, the choice is yours.
If you'd like to get a taste of my writing style before committing, here's a good example. Go and read A Ramblin' Mixtape - Side A
WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?
If I reach my goal, the majority of funds will go into producing the printed books and shipping costs, with any money above the goal going towards improving the quality of the books. A small portion will go towards enabling the Feed Station Reward (see $8 pledge) if anyone actually chooses it. Additional money will be spent to print extra copies for pitching to publishers. (NOTE: I am paying all other costs for the trip, including equipment and accommodations, myself.)
WHY HAVE YOU LIMITED SOME REWARDS?
Although I want to encourage participation during the trip, and share it as much as possible, I also want to be able to enjoy the trip and do what I actually set out to do - gather material for the book! So I'm limiting some of the participation rewards based on how labor intensive they are, but still keeping them fun.
WHAT DOES THE BOOK TITLE MEAN?
I'm from NSW, Australia, where people I know pronounce the the color khaki as “car-key”. In the U.S., it's pronounced ‘cacky’. And where I’m from, cacky means sh*tty, and pants means underwear. Thus rendering the sentence “I’m going to wear my best khaki pants” fantastically awesome. I figure that title ties in nicely with my fear about doing this trip and everything that can go wrong.
