A MULTI-MEDIA EXPERIENCE!
Even though the money we are raising mostly goes to printing the very limited, 500 hardcovers at 8.5x11 size with 100-matte paper, but you're also getting a song, a 30-minute documentary, and a very heartfelt podcast interview to help take the story of this book beyond its pages.
Utilizing nearly every form of media today, ELAN VITAL tells the story of the first robot that gets a soul. In disbelief that he has one, the scientists that created him have Elan create a series of art pieces to prove that he has passion, emotion, and all the things that make up the human soul.
As you read through the book, the story reveals Elan creating types of Purism, Cooking, Origami, Film, Music, Dance, Expressionism, Sand Art, Balloon Twisting, and so much more, not only giving you a rich story that acts as a love letter to all forms of art, but also a full gallery at your fingertips.
An ambitious project to say the least, and one that's never been attempted before on this scale. Who better to bring it to you than a person on the same journey as his main character, Siike Donnelly, brain aneurysm survivor, on a quest to find the artist that once resided within.
Please donate to bring this one-of-a-kind experience to life.
HARMONTOWN EPISODE 97 EXCERPT - MARCH 30th, 2014
I live in Los Angeles with my dog Echo, and have worked at various comic companies such as Arcana, Top Cow, and OSSM Comics. I made my first comic (Swamp Thing) at age 7, built an entire city made of paper with moving monorails when I was 8, and turned my bedroom into a level from MegaMan when I was 9.
When I experienced a brain aneurysm rupture in 2010, my life changed. Not only did I have to relearn how to walk & talk, but I'm doing this project to bring that creative kid deep inside back to life, without the use of my visual memory.
Sometimes I forgets what I just did, or why I started on a piece of art, or what inspired me to do it. Even a few times I've woken up not knowing my name and that I'm a dog owner living in LA. My life can be very frustrating, and you can ask anyone I've worked for in the past few years, it's not easy to work with me.
Doing this Kickstarter and this project allows me to fire synapses in my brain that haven't fired in years. It makes me happy, and it honestly is quite possibly the only thing I'm capable of doing.
CROSSING VARIOUS MEDIA FORMS
Again, you aren't just buying a limited book here, but you're also getting a song that helps tell parts of the story, and a documentary. Elan has to make a film, so he decides to make a documentary about Siike, his creator. Watch the trailer below:
Along with the song and 30-minute documentary that comes with the book, there's also a podcast episode where Siike gets to return the favor and interview Elan on a podcast after the events of the book to tell more of the story. The podcast episode will only be available to Kickstarter backers and is brought to you by The Experiment Comedy in NYC.
You can listen to the first episode of this new show, called REAL CONVERSATIONS WITH FAKE PEOPLE, right here:
There's also an Instagram account for Elan Vital, the robot, so you can keep up with his progress of art through there.
Each THANK YOU will be posted at Siike's Website and the Nerd Nation Facebook page (be sure to LIKE them as they have a great project coming up called "Gateway Runners" that Siike will play a part in as well).
At some levels, you'll be eligible to get these two prints, which are from the front and back cover of the book.
If you're a HARMONTOWN fan, and know me from the show, you've heard about the below prints. I did 3 prints for Harmontown, thought 1 is basically an Indoor Kids print, and have limited them to 50 each. We sold out of the first print at the $25 level, so the way to get these now is at the $100 tier, where you get all 3, or at $150, where you get all 3 signed by me, Dan Harmon, and anyone else we can wrangle.
There's a very pivitol moment in the story where Elan begins to remember a girl from his past. How funny that I would also start to have similar memories. Julia Vickerman is an extremely talented artist & cartoonist, who allowed me to do a portrait out of her with Sand. I'm making a very limited print run of these for the $75 & $200+ tiers only.
The below picture features 4 mini-portraits with wood frames of LOWBROW artwork, starring Smurfette, She-Ra, Cheetara, & Jem in their Dia De Los Muertos versions. You can own one of these at new $125 tier. Act fast, there's only 4.
WHAT THE $5000 PAYS FOR
$3800 pays for the printing of the 500 Hardcovers
$300 pays for the initial prints (not the stretch goal ones)
$300 goes toward shipping & a few last art supplies
$100 is the docking fee at the port where I have to pick up the books
$100 pays for the digital distribution through Media 11:11
Any remainder should hopefully cover Kickstarter's percentage.
$5.000 - UNLOCKED: Pays for all the essentials.
$7,500 - UNLOCKED: Pays for 2 new 8x10 prints (Art Deco & Propaganda) for all donors at $20 & up. Under $20 gets them as Jpegs.
$10,000 - LOCKED: Allows us to upgrade everyone's PDF of the book to a full digital experience thanks to Media 11:11. Now you'll be able to listen to the song, watch the film, and listen to the podcast, all while swiping through the digital copy of the finished book. This is how Elan Vital is meant to be experienced!
$13,008 - LOCKED: This allows us to offer the rare Dust Jacket to everyone at the $30 tier & up, with the image sent as a Jpeg to those under $30. This Dust Jacket gives Elan the full Hardcover experience and features new art by me of donors who give $300 & up. PLUS, we'll add professional voice acting to the Media 11:11 digital copies! That is literally the last form of art I couldn't incorporate and with the extra money, I'll get some great people to help out and bring these characters to new life.

Risks and challenges
The only real RISK or CHALLENGE is just finishing the book in general. My brain takes a huge beating to make each piece. Luckily, I've been working on this book since Fall 2013, with almost half of the project completed already.
As long as I stay on track of doing 2-3 pieces a week, I'll be done around June/July of 2014, August at the latest, with the goal to get every copy printed and mailed out by Thanksgiving.
From the day the Kickstarter ends, I pay the printer soon after, then turn in the book when it's a completed, printable file. Upon approval that the files are right, it takes 9 weeks from that day till I have the books in my hand. And since I planned the finances of this book out better than my last Kickstarter, no one should be waiting longer than November 2014 to get their rewards.
This being my second Kickstarter, I learned a LOT about how to do things. Still, unforeseen things happen. I'll try my best to be prepared for anything. I fulfilled all the rewards to my last Kickstarter, even though it took a year and me dipping into my own money, but I made it happen. So no matter what, if we hit our goal, I'll make sure you get your rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
