About

Revolving around classic designs with innovative new features, Monochrome Vestimentum Public Benefit Company is an ethical apparel company outfitting photographers, adventurers at heart, and anybody seeking dynamism in the clothes they wear. The company was founded out of necessity by photojournalist and features writer Diego James Robles while a senior at Ohio University when it became painfully obvious there wasn’t a viable alternative to the dreaded photographer’s vest.

.  .  . was immense. Dedicated photographic apparel was almost non-existent and what was available, the photographer’s vest mainly, was ill-fitting, too large, and excessively baggy. It wasn’t rugged enough when compared to similar military garments yet it was as butt-ugly as it was ridiculous looking.

But photographers, being an enterprising lot, adjusted and through lengthy trial and error found gear that worked, at least some of the time…except when carrying lenses or running or shooting all day or when carrying more than one body or on formal occasions or on Tuesdays, and so forth.

.  .  . is thoughtful design, attention to detail, respect for the craft, love for the player and most importantly — the game. It is in this vein that Monochrome created dynamic garments with photographer-centric fits, modern lines and silhouettes, ruggedness for decades, and more importantly us in mind.

The Photographer Fit is our signature drape developed for the active photographer and avid outdoorsman. It’s more commodious than the standard while also possessing a exceedingly pleasing silhouette due to its sleeker lines and intelligent design.

Our shirts and jackets feature voluminous arms with forward rotated arm-holes that better accommodate the natural resting position of the upper limbs. These are connected to the body through generous underarm gussets that allow a wide range of movements including the prototypical shooting motion. Slightly smaller shoulders prevent cameras or rifles from sliding off and a slightly tapered midsection give the garment a modern silhouette. A generous bi-swing back provides ample ease and a longer tail is more forgiving when crouching in the field.

Trousers feature a slightly wider waist to accommodate layering and tucking-in while a roomier crotch and thighs allow for greater movement particularly when active. A full crotch gusset makes squatting and jumping easier while a higher back helps eliminate the dreaded photographer’s crack. Lastly a slight tapering down the leg and through the hem give the garment a streamlined modern look.

We primarily manufacture in Bangladesh and are proud of it. The South Asian country is notorious for labor violations and abusive practices towards its workers. From personal experience in the field, the factories there are as bad as they say even though it’s improved substantially in the last few years. But through years of research and more than a year in country searching for the best and most ethical factories, we’ve identified some bright spots and we’re giving them our orders.

We found the best vendors by researching where companies we respect make their products, by going through dozens of NGOs and associations dedicated to helping garment workers, and by interviewing them carefully and studying their decades long track record.

In our quest to do right by these people we discovered that it’s far better to pay more, provide supplemental training, and have an abundance of patience with small charities than to simply turn a blind eye and hope for the best with cheaper fly-by-night vendors.

Founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia and Craig Mathews of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% for the Planet is a global movement of more than 1200 member companies in 48 countries, all donating at least 1% of annual sales to sustainability initiatives. In just over 14 years 1% for the Planet companies have given more than $100 million back to the planet.

  • Monochrome will support photographers, correspondents, adventurers, and anybody seeking higher enterprise wherever they may be.
  • Monochrome will have fun and make fun. Although photography is a noble endeavor and the undertaking done by professionals in the field is of the utmost importance, we as outfitters believe in taking our work seriously, just not ourselves. Following in the timeless tradition of both grand and small armies, expeditions both makeshift and glory-bound, we believe in the power of laughter and the high art of complaining because without levity the peaks are too daunting and the inevitable but character-building setbacks far too soul crushing.
  • Monochrome will not be afraid to fail and do so spectacularly. Without failure there can hardly be greatness. We believe in risking much to gain even more. This is not an unhealthy no-fear delusion but an understanding that if we do our homework, put in the time, and take our b@!!s out and risk them getting stepped on, we can live with the results and perhaps even hobble back to the drawing board. It is the goal of Monochrome to not be politically correct just for the sake of it no matter what misguided outside pressure arises and just as importantly, to not be afraid to apologize when we’re wrong because from time to time we will be.
  • Monochrome will be loyal to our customers and employees. Preferential treatment will be given to those who support Monochrome early and through the gray valleys. Although we reject blind loyalty, we embrace earned fidelity and the bonds forged through mutual suffering and growing pains.
  • Monochrome will never exploit the professional garment workers of the world who manufacture our products. We are also committed to reducing our manufacturing footprint as much as possible. We utilize fair labor and eventually hope to source everything through fair-trade channels. We believe in giving workers bonuses above and beyond what their employers give them no matter how “fair” their compensation is. Monochrome is committed to reducing waste and having the smallest footprint allowable despite making products that by the very nature of being manufactured undoubtedly harm our planet.
  • Monochrome will bring new and innovative products to market. Although we support proven staples and closet workhorses, we reject the re-packaging, superficial redesigning, or simply changing the color-way of existing garments without providing new and proven value to the customer. New products are our lifeblood and without them and their innovations this company will cease to exist.
  • Monochrome will give back to worthy causes. Because we have a background in photojournalism, we believe in putting people first and above all. And because this planet is our only vessel, we believe in making high-quality garments that stand the test of time so less is consumed and we are afforded the pleasure of only working on pieces we truly feel passionate about. Monochrome supports education in photography and the adventure arts. Although most things can be learned empirically through trial and error and the passage of time with repetition, we believe higher mastery can only be achieved through classical training and its proven bonds of fellowship.
  • Monochrome will never be a luxury brand but one whose wares are of the highest quality while remaining accessible to the working hero. Leather and trim only when absolutely necessary.

We’ve designed these products to last a lifetime but should the woven fabric (basically anything that’s not a t-shirt) rip or a seam come undone, send it to us and we’ll mend the garment for life. This lifetime guarantee is only offered to our Kickstarter backers and applies to any product they ever buy from us, be it now in this campaign or in the future till the end of time.

Apart from pledging, the best thing you can do to support this campaign and make Monochrome a reality is spreading the word far and often. Please post our project link on your “walls” or whatever the kids are calling it these days and don’t forget to show us some affection below:

We kind of think most stretch goals are obnoxious and borderline predatory and the rest tend to fluctuate between ill-advised and boring. Because our funding threshold is so low, so that we may bring these garments to you, and our product line so vast for a pioneer line, we’ve made our stretch goal logical and attainable.

If we get to 60K we’ll make the M16 Field Jacket and 1/250th Field Trouser. That’s it. Oh, and just remember what Henry Ford said about custom colors...“Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black.”

Shipping costs will be calculated when you pledge. Southern California backers can pick up their rewards in our Los Angeles headquarters. International backers are responsible for all applicable tariffs and fees from their respective countries. (Dear international clients, we’ve posted the absolute worse case scenarios in terms of international shipping and be advised that we are working on getting these rates lower and are confident we will within the first week of the campaign. If you do not see your country do not worry, we will be adding many more shortly.)

More important than a great product is a great team. Monochrome is NOT looking to hire employees...yet, but to acquire FOUNDING MEMBERS with equity in the company. Basically, you become an owner with decision making power. And yes, you are reading this correctly.

We’re looking for enterprising and motivated ideas people who want to come on board either full or part time. People who want to be part of a creative community and a company that actually makes something you can hold in your hands, something that is going to be somebody’s favorite shirt or jacket, something they will cherish forever.

Experience in photography, fashion, and or business is not mandatory but a plus. Female applicants are especially encouraged to apply.

If you think you have what it takes to develop new products and bring them to market or know someone who could, please drop us a line at partners@themonochrome.com or visit themonochrome.com.

To members of the press (hey, that used to be us) and our blogger friends, ask us about falling off the roof of a train, waking up crawling with bedbugs, and the soul crushing depression that comes with putting your personal life on hold for years on end. For happier topics and or other questions please feel free to reach us at hello@themonochrome.com. In the meantime click here for a full and ridiculously detailed press kit.

Risks and challenges

A lot! Take that in for a moment. We have never done this before and we’d like to tell you that it will all be fun and sunshine but that’s not how the world works and especially NOT how Kickstarter rewards work.

But you have our word that we will do everything within our power to deliver the goods on time and as promised. Although our vendors are experienced and our factories are world class, we are proud to patronize smaller fair-labor and fair-trade institutions, and even some charities, all whose main concern is NOT the bottom line but the well-being of their workers. Nonetheless, we will do everything within our control to assure things go smoothly so we can get these awesome products in your hot little hands.

We reserve the right to slightly tweak any of our products in order to make them better and you should consider this. Having said that, we are comfortable that what we have shown is what will execute.

Moreover, nobody wants to see a great idea executed poorly so we will deliver when the product is good and ready. This will be done in a timely manner but if something unforeseen happens our main priority will be to make the garment the right way.

We kindly ask you NOT TO PLEDGE IF you are not a reasonable person or don’t understand that we are a startup with a handful of employees trying to do something amazing but difficult. Please consider NOT PLEDGING IF you just want “cool $#!t” you don’t need and are not planning on wearing out. But PLEASE PLEDGE if you want to foster and support a company that could be...coolish and maybe even great down the line. We are committed to being in a relationship with you but it’s a two way street.

Lastly, we promise to communicate effectively and often.
