A secret cell of feminist terrorists is planning to liberate women, overthrow the patriarchy, and usher in a new female world order. The group is led by Big Mother (Susanne Sachsse), who operates a school for wayward girls in the countryside as a front for a radical terroristic cell. When a young man, a radical leftist, who is running from the police, happens upon this remote female stronghold, one of the girls takes pity on him and hides him in the basement. His presence eventually disrupts the household and reveals a number of unexpected secrets, as the film moves towards its climax: the revelation of a new style of lesbian porn that is to be used as both propaganda tool and calling card for their new brand of female revolution.
Sachsse has been part of many different theater ensembles, working with Einar Schleef, Heiner Müller and Robert Wilson at the Berliner Ensemble. Since 2000, she was been working freelance, including on projects at HAU and the Volksbühne. She has acted in productions and projects by Bruce La Bruce, Ron Athey, Barbara Weber, Milan Peschel, Sascha Bunge and Claudia Bosse. She has also collaborated with Keren Cytter, Heinz Emigholz and Yael Bartana on video, performances and installations. Her film appearances include Bruce La Bruce’s Pierrot Lunaire, The Raspberry Reich and Otto; Or, Up With Dead People, Christophe Chemin’s Seeking Me You Sat Exhausted, Oskar Roehler’s Der Alte Affe Angst, Alaska.de by Esther Gronenborn and Der Irre. She is a co-founder of the artists’ collective CHEAP, the music band Ruth Fischer and was a co-curator for “Live Film! Jack Smith! Five Flaming Days in a Rented World” at Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Kunst and at HAU – Hebbel am Ufer (2009).
Caprice Crawford has been in front of the camera, acting and singing since the age of 16. In 1987, Caprice gained notice by sportswear company Adidas, who sponsored her efforts and special projects abroad. She attended William Esper Studio in New York City, and has been landing roles for both cinema and television since 1992.
A leading figure in New York’s performance art scene in the 1980s and ’90s, Kembra Pfahler is the co-creator and lead of the burlesque freak-show-punk-rock band, The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. “I grew up in a small surfing town…and all the other kids were swimming and tanning, and I used to like to watch horror films”, she has said. Pfahler took early inspiration from the Viennese Actionists, whose extreme manipulation of their own bodies served as her framework. After making her own horror films and performance pieces, she formed her band in 1990. With sets and props composed of found materials, in keeping with a notion she calls “Availablism”, Pfahler commands stages worldwide (including at the 2008 Whitney Biennial), upending feminine ideals, and challenging viewers with her tantalizing blend of pleasure and horror.
Viva Ruiz is a cultural producer born and raised in Jamaica Queens, the daughter of Ecuadorian immigrants. She is a community educated NYC nightlife veteran, queer Latina priestess, film/music maker, organizer and former sex worker. Viva is currently working on countering anti-choice messaging by creating wearable graphics in praise of abortion. #thankgodforabortion
Kita Updike is an American actress, model and singer based in New York. The Misandrits is her first feature film.
Til is a 23-year-old German actor, known for Die Aufnahmeprüfung (2012) and Jetzt Jetzt Jetzt (2013). He debuted in Nie gesagte Dinge (2009). His most recent feature film, Desire Will Set You Free by Yony Leyser, premiered in Montreal last year and will have its German cinema release in May this year.
Lina Bembe is an adult performer. Since 2015 she sweats in selected alt-porn and erotic productions with renowned feminist pornographers.
Susanne Oberbeck is the founder of electronic band No Bra.
No Bra, formed in east London in 2003, combines electronic pop and heavy industrial beats with minimal piano melodies, and lyrics alternating between the satirical and the romantic. No Bra has toured with bands such as Patrick Wolf, the Gossip and Savages.
Most recently No Bra has appeared on Mykki Blanco’s album “Gay Dog Food”, and is recording new music in NYC.
BRUCE LABRUCE, DIRECTOR
Bruce LaBruce is an internationally acclaimed filmmaker, photographer, writer, and artist based in Toronto. Along with a number of short films, he has written and directed nine feature films, including his most recent, Gerontophilia, which won the Grand Prix at the Festival du Nouveau Cinema in Montreal in 2013, and Pierrot Lunaire, which won the Teddy Award Special Jury Prize at the Berlinale in 2014. As a visual artist he is represented by Peres Projects in Berlin, and has had numerous gallery shows around the world, including “Obscenity”, a photography exhibit that caused a national ruckus in Spain in 2011. His feature film L.A. Zombie was notably banned in Australia in 2010 after having been programmed at the Melbourne International Film Festival. It later premiered in competition at the Locarno Film Festival, Switzerland that same year. LaBruce has written and directed three theatrical works at the Hau Theater in Berlin, including a production of Arnold Schoenberg’s avant-garde piece Pierrot Lunaire at the legendary Hebbel am Ufer Theater. He adapted the latter project into an experimental film, incorporating footage from the stage production combined with additional material shot on location in Berlin. He has also directed theatrical works at the Theater Neumarkt in Zurich, Switzerland, and he participated as a director in the Hau Theater’s ambitious X-Homes project in Johannesburg, South Africa. LaBruce has written a premature memoir called The Reluctant Pornographer, and has had two books published about his work: Ride, Queer, Ride, from Plug-In Gallery in Winnipeg, and Bruce(x)ploitation, a monograph from his Italian distributor, Atlantide Entertainment. LaBruce has contributed to a variety of international magazines, newspapers and websites as both a writer and photographer, including index magazine, for which he also acted as a contributing editor, Vice, The National Post, Purple Fashion, The Guardian UK, and many others. He has also been a regular columnist over the years for Eye, Exclaim! and Vice magazines. Additionally, LaBruce has directed a number of music videos, two of which won him MuchMusic Video Awards in Canada. Most recently, LaBruce has been honoured with film retrospectives at both TIFF/Bell Lightbox 2014, and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, 2015. The MoMA retrospective featured all nine of LaBruce’s features as well as a program of short films. All of the films have now become part of MoMA’s permanent film collection.
JÜRGEN BRÜNING, PRODUCER
Jürgen Brüning is a Berlin based film producer and film programmer. Brüning’s experience making subversive, edgy film projects a reality for the past decades, with numerous low budget films, such as “Too Much Pussy” (2009) by Emilie Jouvet, “Mommy is Coming” (2010) by Cheryl Dunye and “Queen Antigone” (2014) by Telémachos Alexiou. He produced almost all of Bruce’s films since “No Skin off my Ass” in 1990. “Pierrot Lunaire” (2013) by Bruce LaBruce marked a twenty-five year realtionship between Jürgen Brüning Filmproduktion and Bruce LaBruce. Their collaborative work created some of the most controversial works made in the line of the New Queer Cinema.
PAULA ALAMILLO RODRIGUEZ & SONJA KLÜMPER, PRODUCERS
AMARD BIRD Films
Paula Alamillo Rodriguez and Sonja Klümper founded the production company AMARD BIRD Films in 2013. AMARD BIRD Films focuses on projects with a critical gaze upon society, female driven stories, queer content and extraordinary characters. The production company supports directors with a unique visual and narrative statement and promote women in all technical and creative positions. Rodriguez and Klümper are independent filmmakers who studied literature, gender studies and political science, and worked several years in the queer underground film scene of Berlin. The first feature length they produced together "Desire Will Set You Free" (2015) by Yony Leyser had its world premiere last year in Montreal. They have been recently selected at Berlinale Talents 2016 for their work as producers. The Misandrists is their second cooperation with producer Jürgen Brüning.
DESI SANTIAGO, PRODUCTION DESIGNER
Desi Santiago is a New York City-based Puerto Rican visual artist. Santiago’s artistic practice spans from 1990 to the present and is heavily influenced by the subcultures of nightlife, crossing over into the worlds of fashion and art. Santiago’s work addresses and utilizes the respective iconography of these worlds to create ceremonial experiences and relational performances. These often large-scale installations involve theatrical platforms, richly layered with philosophical, historical and social references. Santiago has previously collaborated with luxury brand Louis Vuitton for their Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs Restropective at Musee des Arts Decoratif in Paris. He has designed fashion presentations for Loewe, Y-3 and Patrik Ervell. He has also designed masks and costumes for McQueen: Savage Beauty (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2010 and V&A Museum, London, 2015), Madonna’s MDNA tour, and Hedwig and The Angry Inch on Broadway. Santiago received an MFA from Bard College. Santiago was recently profiled in the Style section of The New York Times. He is represented by Swan Management in New York City and Paris.
RAMONA PETERSEN in collaboration with ZALDY, COSTUME DESIGN
Zaldy is the renowned designer who for over a decade has seamlessly merged the disciplines of Fashion and Music. As Music can evoke any kind of intangible emotion Zaldy’s expertise is rooted in articulating this sensibility in his designs for artists like Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. In 2004 this specific quality was brought to the fashion world with the launch of Gwen Stefani’s highly successful L.A.M.B. Collection where he served as the Head Designer until 2007. Effortlessly fusing the street wear phenomena with the more archetypical glam rock influences – the singers signature look. This underlines Zaldy’s approach to create garments that are not subject to particular trends . They are rooted in the desire to create pieces that serve women who celebrate this confidence of expression beyond the means of time elevating the importance of her individual personality through Zaldy’s designs.
Ramona Petersen is a Berlin based costume designer who works since 2001 internationally for movies, commercials and theater. Her interest is to emphasize and crate characters in their specific genre and period. She worked together with directors like David Sieveking, Fatih Akin, Hans Weingartner, Hansjörg Thurn, Hermine Huntgeburth, Kasper Heidelbach, Lars Kraume, Lisa Jackson, Liam Fay- Fright, Rolf Schübel, Shu Lea Cheang, Yony Leyser ... “The Misandrists” is already her second Production with Jürgen Brüning and her third with Amard Bird Films. Ramona studied costume- and fashion design in Köln, Toronto and Berlin.
MADLICK, FILM SCORE COMPOSERS
MadLick is a Berlin-based techno-pop duo founded in 2013 by Jiga and Eva. The same year, the duo opened Yoko Ono’s concert in Berlin. MADLICK performed around Europe in Festivals such as Fusion Festival Raves in Mexico and Japan. They wrote music to Bruce LaBruce award winning film, Pierrot Lunaire. MADLICK guest starred at the X-Factor TV show in the Adria and recently toured with Peaches as support act in the UK and Germany.
JAMES CARMAN, DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY
James Carman grew up on a ranch in Texas. He specialized in raising hogs and baling hay. After reading many books, he left the countryside to study creative writing and electronic music. Upon graduation, he picked up his knapsack and decided to see the world. He moved to Berlin in 1986 and worked as a photographer. In 1988 he composed a rock opera called, The Outsider’s Overture. From 1989 to 1993 he studied film production in San Francisco and Berlin. His short films premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and the Locarno Film Festival. After a decade in Europe, he moved to New York City where he works as a cinematographer and photographer. He is based in the US but works all over the world. He has shot four features by Bruce la Bruce, two films by Ela Troyano, along with others by John Cafiero, Tim Kirkman, and Isabelle Stever, along with many documentaries and commercials. James is now working on his own documentary, called The Hidden Band, which explores theories of alien contact throughout history.
JOERN HARTMANN, EDITOR
Joern Hartmann is a trained photographer. In 1995 he started making videos of alternative theatre projects and also began making his first music videos and in 2002 he founded the DVD distribution company, Heinz und Horst. He has made two films as a director. Mutti – Der Film (2003) and 18:15 ab Ostkreuz (2006). Both films had their premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. His first collaboration with Bruce LaBruce was with The Raspberry Reich (2003). Since then he has edited several of Bruce LaBruce’s films. He works as a freelance editor and camera person.
Risks and challenges
"Making a low- or no-budget movie is always a challenge, but I refuse to be one of those people who constantly talks about a screenplay or film that they want to make, but never gets around to making it because they are waiting for some ideal situation to emerge. For me, the first rule of filmmaking is "Make Films!" So sometimes I will forge ahead with a project even though all the pieces aren't necessarily in place, and have the momentum of the project build and hopefully push it through to completion with a song and a prayer! I have chosen a film subject, a title, and a concept that most people would think is in no way commercially viable, but the advantage to making movies with modest budgets is that you can explore territory that most commercial entities wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. And you never know, sometimes a film that people would expect not to become a popular success will hit the jackpot! I'm also taking on the subject of feminism, which is a very hot-button issue with a lot of different ideas and perspectives about what actually constitutes the movement, and who belongs to it. As a male, it is a bit of risky proposition to take on the subject, but I have studied a lot over the years under feminists, read a lot of feminist literature, and I have collaborated with many female and feminist artists over the years. It is a subject that holds a deep fascination for me, as does the idea of all oppositional, anti-authoritarian, and radical movements. So I feel like I am up for the challenge!"
