About this project
The Memory Kit Story
The Memory Kit was created by Jeff and two co-founders: Susan Soper, Storyteller-in-Chief, a longtime journalist, and Jeff's dad, John Gray, a former CBS executive, who was the primary caregiver to his wife – and Jeff's mother, Molly Gray – for several years.
Motivated and inspired by Molly's death, we realized and acted on the urgent need for a way to keep families, friends, and caregivers engaged in providing the best care for those who can no longer speak for themselves.
About This Project
Working with a panel of experts, advisors and other Alzheimer’s families, we have spent two years developing a package – or “kit” – of products. All the tools in The Memory Kit make it easy to collect, save and share a person’s wonderful life story ensuring that person will always have a voice in their care – even when they can no longer speak for themselves.
Combining our technology with old-fashioned story-telling, we have created an archival resource that is as unique and memorable as your loved one. This is what makes life matter; this is what makes life better.
Call To Action!
We are now ready to launch The Memory Kit to a wider audience. Backing The Memory Kit will allow us to increase our production capacity and build out our technology, enabling us to reach many more families who are desperate for support and solutions.
Here's How It Works
- We help you gather and organize photos of your loved one's life.
- Our biographer conducts interviews with select family members to gather highlights and details about hometown and childhood, education, career, marriage and family, passions, hobbies, and travel.
- With your help, we create a CareCard(TM) that details the loved one's particular and specific dislikes and what will help calm them on a challenging day. People with Alzheimer's and dementia speak a language all their own. You've learned it over time, but you can't always be there to translate for others. The CareCard is essential for in-home care, assisted living, memory care or hospital stays.
- The Companion Book also includes a Care Notes section where you can record and share changes as the disease progresses.
- The Memory Kit is also viewable on all devices.
Why It Matters
Being a caregiver to someone you love with Alzheimer’s is the hardest job in the world – especially when communicating is no longer an option. You constantly fear you are not making a difference and are always worried about your loved one's comfort and care when you're not right by their side. Here is John, Molly's husband, who knows that emotional experience first-hand.
Inside The Memory Kit Companion Book
The Memory Kit is designed to enable any caregiver in any environment to know the whole person with Alzheimer's. Every book opens with an introduction to them, with a table of contents – from hometown to hobbies, career, and family – crafted as a walk-through of the most important chapters of their life journey.
What are those special descriptors that capture the essence of the person, their personality traits, strengths, passions, and talents? They are right there in the front of the book!
The Memory Kit Companion Book captures the life stories and legacies of your loved one in text and photos. While it's helpful to caregivers in getting to know your loved one, it's also wonderful way for family and friends to engage and reminisce. Memories are good medicine for everyone!
Our Mission: To assist, empower, and educate families struggling to care for their loved ones with Alzheimer's and dementia.
For Spouses and Partners
Alzheimer's is often referred to as "The Long Goodbye." As the disease progresses, your loved ones are is losing more than just their memory. They are also losing the endearing personality traits and characteristics that made you love them. As the burden of caring for them increases, so do your feelings of loneliness and despair: you're losing your best friend when you need them the most.
While the features of the Memory Kit are designed to improve care and quality of life, they also encourage support and communication among your closest family members and friends.
For Brothers and Sisters
Whether you are supporting a parent caring for a spouse or whether you are the primary caregiver to your parent, the sons and daughters of Alzheimer's families carry a heavy burden. In either case, the feeling of helplessness can be overwhelming. The Memory Kit offers a positive and proactive way to provide support.
For Children and Grandchildren
The Memory Kit doesn't just improve your loved one's care and support your family, it also connects every generation. It is our hope that as your children interact with the Memory Kit they'll become educated about the disease and the importance and urgency of early detection and living a brain-healthy lifestyle.
By now you've "met" Jeff and John, but you need to meet our co-founder and Storyteller-in-Chief, Susan Soper, too. A brilliant journalist whose career includes newspapers in New York and Atlanta, she's the genius behind the Memory Kit's methodology for engaging and capturing the essence of people and their unique stories.
Creating Memory Kit Prototypes
This Kickstarter project represents the culmination of nearly two years of work, including research and interviews with doctors, care providers, social workers, nonprofit leaders and families coping with the disease. The last step of the process involved creating fully functional prototype Memory Kits with real families for their loved ones with Alzheimer's and dementia. This video shows a short behind-the-scenes look at the creation of our very first Memory Kits.
"memories start in the heart..."
When we think of Alzheimer's and dementia, we think of the brain. But caring for someone with the disease is all about the heart. Even in the latest stages, when it seems your loved one's memory and mind are barely there, you'll still connect; a song, a photo, or the joy of an unexpected visitor will find its way in, and suddenly they'll be with you the way they once were, if only for a while.
Our logo represents our passion for capturing life stories and their connection to the heart where memories start...and where memories live.
Risks and challenges
We have spent nearly two years in product R&D, developing our technology and working with families to create fully functional Memory Kit prototypes. So...now we're ready to go! The primary challenge with delivering our product is that the creation process requires input from at least one family member, and sometimes delays occur as photos and memories are collected.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
