solarDates : planetary alignments for your special dates
Our wide range of rewards ensures you'll get something perfect for you to celebrate your special date. These are very beautiful products (even if we do say ourselves!) so we thought we'd give you some nice detailed photos. Enjoy!
*If you want multiple of a reward, just double the amount of the pledge and the postage. Any questions, just drop us a message :D
Every single day in history, there has been a unique configuration of our solar system's planets. Your kids' birthdays, your wedding anniversary, your nephew's graduation - they're all different configurations!
We think this is such a profound idea, that we wanted to share it with you, through these beautiful and unique products.
We will ship rewards worldwide and pay the full amount of postage needed from the P&P portion of your pledge. We can not pay for any import taxes or duties various countries may apply to the shipment.
How are we doing this?
The Moon and planetary positions are calculated from extremely accurate real data from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory - quite literally generated for missions to the Moon, Mars, and other solar system bodies.
To produce these amazing personalised rewards we are analysing the NASA data using our very own Python computer code. This code will transform your date into a representation of the solar system. Planetary orbits, planets, and The Moon are shown in their unique alignment around The Sun.
To show the orbits, The Sun, The Moon, and the planets exactly to scale we would need to produce extraordinarily huge products and still have most of the planets as microscopic dots, so there is a little bit of artistic license in the scaling to make the items precise but also practical (and beautiful).
Who are we?
The Making Rooms is a small not-for-profit Community Interest Company and our main mission is to inspire people to become makers, and makers to become entrepreneurs.
To this end, every weekend we run a free, open-access Fab Lab, inspiring, encouraging and supporting people of all ages and from all backgrounds to learn to use our wide range of digital and traditional making equipment, such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC machining, electronics and wheel thrown ceramics.
For those people who we inspire to turn their new skills into a business we run a quarterly startup accelerator programme called TECH BLACKBURN. We also have a growing community of artistic and technically minded entrepreneurs in our coworking space.
We provide access to our machines for sole-traders, creatives, and micro-businesses who wouldn’t otherwise have access to these technologies because of the prohibitive cost of buying the machines.
(I know...we do A LOT!)
We have the designs and machines ready to go. All we need is to order materials and receive your special dates to start producing our lovely little solarDates.
Follow the campaign here on Kickstarter, or our social media. See what else we do too!
Why are we doing this?
We’re a bit geeky. We want to produce really precious, personal items to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing using Open Data. We think there is a better way to create quality personalised products and gifts than simply etching someone’s name onto something.
This process will also help us to inspire and support our budding entrepreneurs. We want to show them how brilliant crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter can be to help launch a business (sometimes into the stratosphere!) by providing not just initial funding but also invaluable market insights and feedback.
How did we come about this idea?
For the last 3 years The Making Rooms has had its own stall at the amazing Blue Dot science and music festival at Jodrell Bank observatory, in the shadow of the gigantic Lovell Telescope. Each year we have laser cut personalised products from our stall with a space theme, but until this year they have always been products with a name laser etched onto them.
As this year was the 50 year celebration of the Moon Landings we wanted to do something a bit special, so we decided to make a personalised product using NASA planetary position data that has been used for missions to The Moon.
We produced prototypes on The Making Rooms’ stall at the festival in July and for the entire 3 days we had at least an hour’s queue of people waiting for their very own personalised birch ply solar system pendants made on our Laser Cutter, with queues starting half an hour before we opened each morning. This is when we realised we were on to something!
From there we have refined the design to make our SolarDates into super special keepsakes that people will treasure forever.
What will a successful campaign mean for us?
Well first and foremost it will mean a lot of hard work (but we can handle that!) As soon as we reach our goal we start producing the files for the machines and as soon as the campaign is over we will get the materials ordered and start producing straight away. We expect the first deliveries to start arriving a month after the campaign ends.
It will also mean we can grow The Making Rooms’ product development. This will be a real help in providing income to support the community work we do. It will further inspire us, and our beneficiaries to get designing new and exciting products for future Kickstarter campaigns.
As fellow earthlings, we really appreciate your support in helping our visions of the solar system become a reality.

Risks and challenges
We make stuff for a living, it's what we do. We have the machines, designs, prototypes and suppliers ready to go. We have even posted some units out to ensure our packaging survives the journey - it does.
